00:00Hi, I'd like to ask what was the inspiration behind the darker and more gory and supernatural theme in Sinners compared to your previous work and what motivated you, Michael, to take on this role?
00:10It seems like quite a shift from what both of you have done before.
00:14Yeah, for me, I like these types of movies. I just hadn't had a chance to make one yet. So it was something that was always a passion of mine.
00:24Some of my favorite films are pretty intense. If they're not outright horror movies, they have horror elements and it can get pretty gory.
00:34So I was excited to do it. I've been, for the last 13 years, been working on franchise films.
00:48So it was great to get away from that for a bit and make something more outside of the box.
00:52Yeah, for me, just something different outside my comfort zone. Horror movies are typically not the movie I tend to watch on my own.
01:00So it was definitely something to, you know, kind of help get over that fear a little bit.
01:05And if I see how it was made, if I was a part of one, it probably, you know, kind of like, you know, desensitize myself from it a little bit and take the fear factor out of it.
01:13And yeah, it was a lot of fun to make it.
01:15And well, the other one is one of the central themes of Sinners is freedom.
01:20And at some point of the movie, I was just thinking like, dude, I'm just letting them be free.
01:24And that was frustrating because the film powerfully reflects how society still treats oppressed groups, forcing them to risk their lives, often paying the ultimate price just for their chance at freedom.
01:34What is the film's message in this? Is this like, is that truly the only path to freedom?
01:40Wow, that's an intense question.
01:44Yeah, I mean, I guess what I was after with the movie was the healing power of certain rituals and the healing power of community.
01:57You know, like that is something that, you know, is very difficult to take away.
02:08And the unrelenting drive that human beings have to self-actualize, you know, that was something that I was fascinated with.
02:19More than any, like, any answer or thesis, you know, a statement about society or anything like that.
02:30I really wanted to make a film that was about the actual strive to self-actualize and self-determine and that act being done by normal, everyday people, you know, if that makes sense.
02:46Yeah, I mean, you know, you know, art is powerful, you know, I'm saying, and cinema is one of the most powerful mediums and, you know, it's up for interpretation, you know, and sometimes, you know, one personal, you know, perspective or objective to tell a story, to storytell can mean so many different things on so many different levels, you know, and it's about what you take away from it, you know.
03:14So I'm happy that you, you know, you saw those things inside the film, inside these characters, because I think, you know, the goal, but, you know, other people will too, you know what I'm saying?
03:25And, yeah, without everything being so intentional and so premeditated and so planned, you know, I think you get those things by way of just, you know, telling the story about these two brothers that wanted to be free for a night.
03:41Awesome. Awesome. Thank you. Thank you very much. It's really nice to meet you.
03:45Thank you. Great. Great questions. Thank you.
