00:00Lost treasure, the foundation of legends and lore, and the greatest lost treasure of all,
00:18belong to the Knights Templar.
00:22Now, from the medieval fortified cities of Europe, to the holy lands of the Middle East,
00:29from a secret pirate island in the Indian Ocean, to America's first great cities, new evidence is being unearthed.
00:38One of our archaeologists found this.
00:41Revealing hidden links between the Knights Templar and pirates.
00:48If it's what I think it is, it'll be the front page of every newspaper in the world.
00:52How did it get on the bottom of the ocean in Madagascar?
00:55Madagascar.
00:57Pirate shipwrecks, untouched for hundreds of years, may hold the lost Templar treasure.
01:04That's like a Templar cross.
01:06Now is when the mystery starts to get unraveled.
01:08Sparking a journey across the globe and back in time to solve this ancient mystery.
01:13I'm trying to crack the secret codes, signs, and symbols the Knights Templar left behind.
01:22Knights Templar historian Scott Walter joins world-famous underwater explorer Barry Clifford
01:29in an adventure to crack a secret code and rewrite history as we know it.
01:35We could be making incredible discoveries, maybe we're that far away.
01:39These artifacts could be connected.
01:42I want to get to the truth.
01:43Knights Templar historian Scott Walter is heading to Cape Cod, where world-renowned underwater explorer Barry Clifford has a relic
02:05that could unlock mysterious connections between the medieval Knights Templar and 17th century pirates.
02:14Well, I received a call from a guy I've never met.
02:17His name is Barry Clifford, and he's asked me to come and take a look at some artifacts that he pulled out of the ocean in Madagascar.
02:24And it sounds like these artifacts could be connected to the Knights Templar.
02:30Well, that's something I know a little bit about.
02:34I've spent 15 years hooked by the question of what happened to the lost treasures of the medieval Knights Templar order.
02:46The Knights Templar were a secretive order of warrior monks, birthed during the Crusades of the 12th century.
02:54Based in Jerusalem, they were the shock troops in Christendom's war against Islam for control of the Holy Land.
03:05Despite vows of poverty, the Templars amassed power and fortune to rival popes and kings.
03:16In 1307, its leaders were arrested on sensational charges of heresy and burned at the stake in Paris.
03:24The Knights Templar fortune, thought to be one of the greatest in history, was never found.
03:35And most intriguingly, it's believed those Templars who survived fled France under the flag of the Skull and Crossbones.
03:44A flag raced 400 years later on the high seas by renegade pirates.
03:55Barry thinks that we might be able to uncover some new evidence that's going to tell us more about this story
04:02and the mysteries of what happened to the lost treasures of the Knights Templar.
04:06Barry has made a remarkable discovery on a sunken pirate ship in the Indian Ocean that he believes is the fiery dragon.
04:20A holy relic he's convinced is linked to the Knights Templar.
04:25One of our archaeologists found this in very, very shallow mud.
04:29And we think the feet are still there, and we think the arms are there.
04:34And the crucifix, we have to believe this was attached to a crucifix.
04:38Probably attached to a crucifix, right?
04:40And the arms are probably still on the crucifix.
04:42Well, this is fascinating, it is.
04:44Can I turn it over and look at it a little bit?
04:47Sure.
04:47It's certainly exquisitely made, that's for sure.
04:52One of the main features that jumps out at me is the emaciated body.
04:57The ribs you can see under the skin.
05:00These two holes were used to attach some type of sash.
05:05And the question is, where did that come from?
05:07Yeah, yeah.
05:09Well, it's possible this statue dates to the 12th or 13th century.
05:14I mean, at the time when the Templars were in Jerusalem.
05:17That's been on a long journey.
05:19Yeah.
05:19And it's spent over at least 300 years underwater.
05:22Underwater.
05:24Amazing.
05:30All right, I'm blown away.
05:32You got me.
05:34How is this Christ figure from the time of the Knights Templar linked to the pirates?
05:39Two groups separated by 400 years.
05:42That ivory carving of Jesus has me totally intrigued.
05:48This thing just drew me in, and it's drawing me in.
05:51I think this probably dates back to the time of the Templars.
05:55And if so, we've got to get more evidence.
05:58Who carved it?
05:59When was it carved?
06:00And how did it get on the bottom of the ocean in Madagascar?
06:04That's the big question.
06:06And the best place to go is where it all started for the Templars.
06:10Jerusalem.
06:10Jerusalem.
06:12While Scott digs deeper into Templar history, Barry will mount a large-scale dive off Madagascar
06:22at the site of what he believes is the fiery dragon shipwreck to hunt for more clues.
06:27Together, Barry and Scott hope to find concrete evidence that not only links the Templars to pirates,
06:36but also leads them to the greatest lost treasure in history.
06:40We're going to piece together the insignias and the secret codes to see what we can learn about the secret of society of pirates,
06:52what their connection was, you know, to the Templars.
06:565,000 miles from Cape Cod is the first stop in Scott's search for the origin of Barry's Christ figure.
07:06We are here.
07:07We are here.
07:09This is Jerusalem.
07:11You know, I can't even tell you what it is.
07:16There's just something about the iconography of Barry's Christ figure that, to me, dates back to the time of the Templars when they were here in Jerusalem.
07:25How did it get on the bottom of the ocean in Madagascar?
07:29That's the big question.
07:30If there's any evidence that we can find to make that link between the Christ figure, the Templars and Madagascar, it's right here.
07:39Jerusalem, the holy city of the world's three great monotheistic religions.
07:46At its heart, the Temple Mount, the holiest ground in Judaism, believed to be the site of King Solomon's Temple and his fabled treasure.
07:58On it lies the Dome of the Rock in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam's third holiest site, where Muslims believe Muhammad ascended to heaven.
08:07And in Jerusalem's old city, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Christians believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected.
08:18Look at these walls, the walls of the city of Jerusalem, new Jerusalem here, the old city here.
08:28Here we are, walking down the very street that Jesus walked, carrying the cross to his crucifixion.
08:41This is also the street the Crusaders walked a thousand years after Christ, when they captured the Holy Land at the very end of the 11th century and controlled the Holy Land for the next almost 200 years.
08:55To trace the trail of the Templar Christ figure, found by Barry on a pirate shipwreck off Madagascar, Scott must explore the origins of the Knights Templar and their treasure.
09:09The clues lie in a sacred site at the heart of Jerusalem.
09:14There it is, there it is, the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount.
09:21I can't believe I'm seeing it.
09:27Traditional scholarly thinking is that the Templars acquired their wealth and power through their business acumen and commerce.
09:35And certainly they made money that way.
09:37Other people believe that the source of their wealth came from under the Dome of the Rock.
09:47The Knights Templars set up their headquarters next to the Dome of the Rock in 1120.
09:53Twenty-one years after the First Crusade took control of the city.
09:59The Templars believed it was the site of the Temple of Solomon which housed the Ark of the Covenant.
10:05They took their name, Templars, from this holy place.
10:11According to legend, they dug in secret below the Temple, searching for King Solomon's fabled treasure.
10:17If you stop and think about it, because of the enormous success that they enjoyed after they were here,
10:28there's a good chance that they indeed did find King Solomon's treasures.
10:35In 1867, pioneering archaeologist Captain Charles Warren began excavations on the Temple Mount
10:43that offered important clues about the mystery of King Solomon's treasure.
10:47In 1867, he entered a cave known as the Well of Souls,
10:54where legend says the spirits of the dead await Judgment Day.
11:01Here, Warren found a further chamber, where some believed the Templars uncovered the treasure.
11:10Scott has secured access to Warren's 150-year-old map,
11:14which may show where this chamber lies.
11:17This is an amazing document.
11:22Now, if you look closely, there's an entrance directly under the Dome of the Rock,
11:26down to the Well of Souls.
11:28But what really has me excited is if you look, you can see that that vertical shaft continues below the floor
11:35of that chamber, and it looks like that there's the top of another chamber below that, a second level below that.
11:41But then it stops. It just ends right there, which to me is very cryptic.
11:46Somebody like that who was very detailed, as evidenced by the work he did, if he went down there and found a second chamber,
11:53why didn't he map it? Which leads me to believe that he might have known that there was more.
12:00I need to find answers to the question that has been pondered for 900 years,
12:06back when the Templars were here in the Holy Land, digging under the Temple Mount.
12:10What were they doing? What were they looking for? And most importantly, what did they find?
12:16And man, I just got to get underneath here to see what Charles Warren saw.
12:20But it's going to be very difficult, because people of the Islamic faith are really the only ones allowed down here.
12:31To investigate the Well of Souls, Scott will have to gain access to one of the most sensitive
12:36and closely guarded places on Earth. But it just might hold the clue that directly links
12:43the medieval Knights Templar to 17th century pirates.
12:46It's incredibly hard for a Westerner like me to get in there. It's a long shot, but if there's any chance at all, I'm going for it.
13:02Are the medieval Knights Templar of the 12th century directly connected to 17th century pirates?
13:11Could one of history's most famous treasures have ended up as pirate booty?
13:16Explorers Barry Clifford and Scott Walter are trying to find out.
13:22I think this probably dates back to the time of the Templars.
13:25That's been on a long journey.
13:30While Scott is in Israel investigating the Templars,
13:34more than 3,000 miles away on the island of Madagascar,
13:38Barry and his team of world-renowned divers and archaeologists are investigating 300-year-old pirate shipwrecks,
13:46where an earlier dive led to the discovery of what they believe are Knights Templar artifacts.
13:51If you want to go where the pirates were, where the pirate kings were, the big guys, the most successful guys,
14:01you've got to come here. This is where they were.
14:04You know, I get chills thinking about it, and I, you know, can't sleep at night thinking about getting
14:11back in the water and seeing what's out there today and what we're going to find, and so it's really pretty cool.
14:17Any second we could be, we could be making, you know, incredible discoveries.
14:24I mean, maybe we're that far away.
14:37The period 1650 to 1730 is known as the golden age of piracy.
14:44When vicious outlaw seamen preyed on rich merchant vessels, amassing huge fortunes.
14:49In the 1680s, as European colonial powers clamped down on piracy in the Caribbean,
14:58the pirates came to the Indian Ocean.
15:04They discovered that Madagascar and its fabled island of Isle Saint Marie
15:09were perfectly placed for looting rich halls crossing the Indian Ocean.
15:15The island's bays and inlets provided shelter from the storms.
15:19And the quiet waters gave excellent anchorage.
15:24Here, a group of notorious pirates set up what became known as Pirate Island.
15:32There's nothing like this in the world. You've got five pirate ships
15:37within two or three hundred feet from shore. It's a massive, massive project we have here.
15:43You know, this is like the valley of the kings of pirate ships.
15:50Barry thinks one of the five wrecks is the fiery dragon, based on his previous research and dives in the area over the last 15 years.
15:58Billy One Hand Condon seized it from the Dutch East India Company in 1720.
16:07With a crew of some 500 pirates, he used the fiery dragon to attack ships from Africa to India,
16:13and was feared for sometimes cutting off the noses and ears of his prisoners.
16:21Today, the only visible sign of what the team believes is the wreck site is its boulder ballast pile.
16:28But it's under those rocks that Barry Clifford suspected Templar Christ was found.
16:33And here, that Barry's crew will dive.
16:36The fiery dragon is William Condon's, aka Billy One Hand's ship.
16:43It had approximately 200,000 pounds sterling, not just treasure, but silks and porcelain.
16:49And we have reason to believe that there are a lot of very important Templar artifacts still on the ship.
16:56Barry's joined by his right-hand man, archaeologist Chris McCourt.
17:01Every day we're here, every hour, every minute, we have the possibility of making great discoveries.
17:06You don't get a chance like this very often in life.
17:21Doing what we do best, uncovering pirate shipwrecks.
17:26Chris and fellow team member John Dubry make a beeline for the center of the ballast pile.
17:31Okay, it should be right here.
17:35It looks really different.
17:37It's not very clear.
17:40Too much of silt.
17:42This whole place we're covered with.
17:46Then, towards the stern of the ship, Chris makes a breakthrough.
17:52The fiery dragon, we found something on the fiery dragon.
17:56It's really incredible.
18:05I did find something kind of interesting.
18:07I really couldn't see it underwater, but I just turned over one of the ballast stones, and this was right there.
18:17Archaeologist John Dubry takes a closer look.
18:20Southeast Asia comes to mind because it looks like a little Buddha.
18:25Good find.
18:26But is this seemingly Asian head another possible Templar artifact?
18:34Is it somehow connected to the Templar Christ figure Barry found that set this mystery in motion?
18:40We've just discovered something that's very exciting.
18:44I'd much rather see that gorgeous face and headdress than any coin.
18:52We're in the area where we found the crucifix, where we think that the cross to the crucifix may be, the arms of Christ may be.
19:01So my hunch is that it's extremely important.
19:05And every day that we're here, we're going to find new mysteries.
19:08The dive team is off to a great start.
19:17Meanwhile, in Jerusalem,
19:21Scott Walter has made a breakthrough in his mission to trace the origin of Barry's Templar Christ figure.
19:29Scott has used his insider contacts with the authorities to gain access under the Dome of the Rock,
19:35where Scott believes the Templar stored ancient biblical treasures.
19:43This is an incredible opportunity.
19:45We're going to take full advantage, but we have to be very respectful, okay?
19:48This is the most sacred ground in the world.
19:51Well, the Dome of the Rock is here.
20:01This is the Al-Aqsa Mosque, where the Templars had their headquarters right here, plotting, planning to dig under here.
20:09Literally walking in the footsteps of the Templars that were here, back at the very earliest part of the 12th century.
20:21Just incredible.
20:25Scott could be on the verge of his first big breakthrough in cracking the Templar pirate code.
20:30On Jerusalem's Temple Mount, Knights Templar historian Scott Walter has gained access to the Dome of the Rock,
20:44a religious shrine and one of the holiest sites on earth.
20:47He believes that beneath it lie clues to the lost treasure of the Knights Templar.
20:57Keep in mind, I mean, when the Templars first entered this holy sanctuary,
21:02I mean, they were respectful even of their enemy's faith, so this was a moving place to come into.
21:09We're about to go down the steps under the foundation stone, the most sacred place under the Dome of the Rock.
21:21Legend has it, and if it's to be believed, this is where the Templars came and dug right down here.
21:27Well, here we are, deep down into the well of souls.
21:39We have people praying here, and it was down here that Muhammad himself prayed before he ascended to heaven.
21:51Here, a secret chamber may have held the Templars' vast treasure,
21:55but Scott can't find any clues to the hidden vault.
22:02If we could find some evidence that connected to a room down here, that'd be amazing.
22:09I'm not seeing anything yet.
22:14One thing we know for sure, the Templars were definitely down here.
22:19As Scott surveys the room, it's clear that all access below has been sealed off.
22:26It makes me wonder what else is down there, how far does it go, how many chambers are there,
22:31and how many of those chambers were the Templars in.
22:36Any Templar secrets hidden beneath the Dome of the Rock will remain a mystery for now.
22:41But Scott has a promising new lead.
22:47He's come to Jerusalem's Israel Museum to meet Professor Adrian Boas.
22:51Boas is one of Israel's leading archaeologists, specializing in the Crusades.
23:05He has a medieval artifact that he thinks could link to the ivory figure of Christ Scott is investigating.
23:11So here it is.
23:12Wow.
23:13You shot me.
23:13A figure of Christ.
23:17It dates to the period of the second half of the 12th or the early 13th century.
23:22So it falls nicely in the Crusader period.
23:24Right in the middle.
23:24Templars.
23:25Perfect.
23:25Yeah.
23:26And if you look here, we've got a shot.
23:29This one also is missing the arms.
23:32You can see the ribs through the skin.
23:34Very similar.
23:37Am I not seeing the same thing here?
23:38Yes, indeed.
23:39You certainly see it in this piece.
23:40Okay.
23:41No, there's definitely a similarity in the way it's depicted from that aspect.
23:45So it does make sense to you that it could indeed come from a similar time period of the Crusaders, right?
23:51Yeah.
23:52Okay.
23:53So tell me, how did you get this?
23:55Well, this was purchased by a former archaeologist in Aka or Akko.
24:02Wasn't that the city where the final siege of the Templars took place?
24:06That is correct.
24:08Yeah.
24:10The meeting with Professor Boas has linked the Ivory Christ figure Scott is investigating
24:15to the port city of Aka, where the Templars made their final stand before retreating
24:21and giving up their 200-year-old hold of the Holy Land.
24:24Well, thank you very much.
24:25My pleasure.
24:26Appreciate it.
24:30As Scott is leaving the museum, another important artifact catches his eye.
24:38Do you know what these are?
24:40These are ossuaries.
24:42This is where the skull and crossbones symbol originates.
24:45The skull and crossbones became notorious in the 17th century as a pirate flag used to spread terror
24:57among their enemies.
24:58But one theory suggests its origins go back much further.
25:05Also known as the Jolly Roger, some claim it was named after Roger II, a 12th century king of Sicily,
25:13said to be the first to fly the infamous flag, a man with close ties to the Templars.
25:19But Scott believes the Templars first encountered the symbol in the Holy Land, where it dates back to the time of Christ.
25:28Back in the first century, the Essene, Jesus' people, had a unique burial practice.
25:38They would let the body decompose for one to two years.
25:42They'd cover it in a shroud.
25:44Then they would come back, collect the bones, and put them inside of these boxes.
25:49But these boxes are only big enough so that the largest bones in the body, the femurs,
25:54fit inside the cross.
25:57Then the skull goes in last.
25:59That's the origin of your skull and crossbones.
26:04We have a connection between Jesus and his people, the Essene, with the Templars, with pirates.
26:11There's a definite link with all three because we see the pirates flashing the Jolly Roger,
26:17which means they're connected to the Templars who fly the skull and crossbones,
26:22who obviously knew about this burial tradition of Jesus and the Essene.
26:26So when we see the Jolly Roger, it's a symbol of reverence of Jesus and his people.
26:39The skull and crossbones is an important historical link and fuels Scott and the team's theory
26:45that there is a direct connection between pirates and the Knights Templar.
26:52This area is ground zero for the legends and the myths about the Knights Templar.
26:58And the more I've seen, the more I'm beginning to think they're not myths at all,
27:01that there's truth to the story, that they were here, they dug under the Temple Mount,
27:06and they found something of great importance.
27:09Scott's work in Jerusalem is done, for now.
27:13His next step is 80 miles north to the port city of Acre, where he's hoping another major clue awaits.
27:19If I'm going to find any evidence that connects that Christ figure to the Templars,
27:25it's going to be in the ancient city of Acre where the Templars had their final siege before they gave up the Holy Land forever.
27:32There's got to be something important there, and if there is, I'll find it.
27:36The Knights Templar historian Scott Walter and underwater explorer Barry Clifford are on a journey to uncover connections between the Knights Templar and pirates.
27:52While Scott is investigating the Templars in Israel.
27:55Off the southeast coast of Africa, on Pirate Island, Barry and his team are examining what they believe to be a Buddhist artifact pulled up from the wreck they are convinced is the fiery dragon.
28:13This looks really incredible.
28:14I did find something kind of interesting, looks like a little Buddha, good find.
28:22It's a little statue carving of a face with a headdress and it looks to be South Asian and
28:33very, very unique piece, nobody's ever seen anything quite like it.
28:36This is real treasure. This is, you know, this is what excites me.
28:48This far eastern relic might have come to Pirate Island as pillaged treasure, seized on raided ships.
28:56However, there is also an intriguing link to the Knights Templar.
29:00Some experts have argued that the idea of a fighting Christian order stemmed from China.
29:10Where Buddhist monks practiced their fighting skills as a means of spiritual attainment.
29:18They believe that in the Middle Ages, these Asian warrior monks traveled through Moorish dominated Southwest Europe.
29:26And came into contact with the heretical Cathars.
29:30Who passed the knowledge on to the Templars.
29:38The cross-section of cultural material is off the charts.
29:42And this is, this is evidence of that.
29:46What does it mean?
29:49It's hard to stop looking at it.
29:52It's beautiful. It really is really beautiful.
29:55So now is when the mystery starts to get unraveled.
30:00The ivory Christ was found, you know, test pit adjacent to this test pit.
30:04And as your mind wanders and you begin to think what could possibly be here.
30:09You know, I get goosebumps just kind of thinking about it.
30:11How is the figure of Christ found by Barry on the suspected site of the fiery dragon,
30:17one he believes is connected to the Knights Templar, linked to the Asian Buddha found on that same wreck?
30:26Barry will send an image off to a leading expert to get a definitive answer.
30:30Great team. Great job, you guys.
30:37We opened up a whole new page in history about the pirates.
30:40And I think we're about ready to open up a whole new volume in history about the pirates that are here.
30:46It's not just the dive sites that interest Barry.
30:54The entire shore is littered with artifacts.
31:00In 1722 or 3, Captain Reddish came here on an English ship
31:05and described a 10-foot-high pile of porcelain right here on this beach,
31:10which was taken off of the fiery dragon.
31:14You could walk around this yard right now and find 50 pieces of Ming porcelain,
31:19you know, in the sand, all over the beach.
31:24Oh, my God. I don't believe what I'm seeing here.
31:28That is very, very interesting.
31:37Oh, my God. I don't believe what I'm seeing here.
31:40In Madagascar, Barry Clifford may have found more evidence linking the Knights Templar to the pirate shipwrecks.
31:52Hey, Claudio.
31:54What do you see here?
31:55I found this on the beach right there.
31:57I think that is a Freemason symbol.
32:02We know many of the pirates were, you know, Freemasons.
32:06Yeah.
32:08And I believe there's a connection between the Freemasons and the Templars.
32:13In my opinion, that's definitely a Masonic symbol.
32:15And I just found it just like a piece of broken glass right here.
32:18People have walked over it for years.
32:20It's amazing. It's amazing.
32:23When was this lost?
32:25Barry believes the marking on the fragment resembles the square and compass symbol of the Freemasons.
32:34He's found the symbol on pirate shipwrecks before.
32:39Could Freemasonry be the missing link between the Templars and the pirates?
32:43Legend suggests this could well be the case.
32:50After they were driven out of France in 1307, it's believed some Templar knights fled to Scotland.
32:58This is where the first Freemason lodge was established in 1599.
33:03Inspired, it's argued, by local Templar traditions.
33:07Freemason initiation rites were based on and named after the Templars.
33:17What's more, Freemasons draw sacred inspiration from King Solomon's Temple,
33:22said to house the Ark of the Covenant, and on whose site the Templars built their headquarters in Jerusalem.
33:28And intriguingly, some Freemasons ceremonial robes feature the skull and crossbones.
33:41The Knights Templar, Freemasons, and pirates share a wealth of secret symbols and rituals.
33:48But the full story of how those links connect remains untold.
33:59Excited by the find, Barry gathers his team to scour the beach for more evidence.
34:08Diver two on surface.
34:12After a few hours of searching, Barry spots another pottery shard.
34:20Oh my god.
34:22To Barry, it's a smoking gun.
34:24Cross.
34:30Cross.
34:31Claudio.
34:33It's like a Templar cross.
34:35Is that real?
34:36It's real.
34:37That's incredible.
34:38That is, you found it up here?
34:40Right here.
34:41Right beside where he found the Masonic symbol.
34:44And also it seems the same type of pottery, the same type of clay.
34:48Yeah.
34:48Yeah.
34:48Unbelievable.
34:49You can't make that stuff up.
34:54For Barry and the team, the pottery fragments were a significant find.
34:59And take them one step closer to proving a direct connection between Templars and pirates.
35:04I think this expedition has blown it all wide open.
35:08And the fact that we were finding 13th century Christian artifacts.
35:12Who was here before the written history?
35:15Where are these 13th century and 14th century artifacts coming from?
35:18And I don't pretend in any way to know the answers.
35:21The answers.
35:22I'm just finding the stuff.
35:31Renowned underwater explorer Barry Clifford and Knights Templar historian Scott Walter
35:37are on an unprecedented mission to solve a mystery that spans 400 years
35:44and links the medieval Knights Templar to the 17th century brotherhood of pirates.
35:52The puzzle began with what the team believes is a prized Templar artifact that Barry recovered
35:57from a pirate shipwreck in Madagascar.
36:00An ivory figure of Christ.
36:04How did it get there?
36:07The team is determined to find out.
36:10While Barry leads the pirate side of the investigation in Madagascar.
36:18Scott is in Israel, where the Templars once reigned.
36:23He's explored the holy sites of Jerusalem,
36:26looking for evidence that links the journey of the Christ figure
36:29to the movement of the Templars.
36:33I mean, in some ways it's almost overwhelming to imagine the Templars were right here.
36:40Now, Scott's on the road to the city of Acre, 80 miles north of Jerusalem.
36:50After talking to Adrian, he said that he believed that his Christ figure
36:55originated from somewhere near Acre.
36:59I might be able to find something there.
37:01After Jerusalem fell to Muslim forces in 1187, the Templars relocated their headquarters to Acre,
37:12building a fortress to protect their treasure in a tunnel system that led to the sea.
37:17But time was running out for the Crusader states in the Holy Land.
37:25One by one, they fell to superior Muslim forces, until in 1291, Acre itself came under siege.
37:32The Templar forces are being overrun, engaged in a vicious, bloody battle, right here on these very streets.
37:47They only had one place to go, underground.
37:50Scott is investigating Templar tunnels under the city streets.
38:04Hey, look at this.
38:06We have an X-ray here and an X-ray here.
38:10That's the symbol of somebody who's been initiated into the order.
38:14We have two intersecting circles here that make something called the Besicus Pisces.
38:19This is a concept of sacred geometry. The Templars are absolutely into that, for sure.
38:29Wow.
38:30Can you see the AVM?
38:33Ave Virgo Maria, Ave Maria Magdalena.
38:37The Templar symbols match the Freemason symbol Barry discovered on Pirate Island.
38:47Mary Magdalene represented the goddess to the Templars.
38:50And so to see that AVM here, for me, is perfect. It connects with the Templars perfectly.
38:56I've seen it all around the world in context with the Templars.
39:01These are symbols. They're consistent with the Templars.
39:03It's 13th century. It's right in the wheelhouse for when they were here.
39:07These were made by the Templars.
39:11For Scott, these are important new clues.
39:16Well, one thing we know for sure, the Templars were definitely down here in this tunnel system.
39:21And during the final siege of Acre, they used these tunnels.
39:253,000 escaped, maybe even down this passageway right here to the sea.
39:29Legend says the knights carried the Templar treasure through these tunnels to waiting ships.
39:39The question is, where did they take it?
39:47And does the answer lie in the ivory Christ figure that was found on a pirate ship more than 3,000 miles away in Madagascar?
39:55I mean, here we are, right here on the Mediterranean, where the Templars escaped after the final siege.
40:05I've been looking for symbols, signs, anything that connects to Barry's Christ figure.
40:12I really do feel like there is a connection between that figure and the Knights Templar.
40:17It appears to date to that age, all I need to find is some connecting evidence to make that link.
40:25I'm very excited about the artifacts that Barry has already found in Madagascar.
40:29He could be very close to finding something that blows this case wide open.
40:34And I'm confident the breakthrough I'm looking for is just around the corner.
40:40But I'm going to keep looking. I'm not done.
40:43This season, on pirate treasure of the Knights Templar.
40:46You're not going to believe this.
40:48That is a Templar symbol. We're onto something very, very important here.
40:52Could Captain Kidd have been involved in a highly secretive mission to get Templar treasure?
40:58This is a secret coded cipher.
41:04This is the only key to a pirate's treasure chest in the door.
41:08There's something of great importance right here.
41:11I want to know more about that.
41:14Wow.
41:15This could be a very important clue.
41:19The Templars use all kinds of different alphabets to communicate.
41:23What's that down there? Let's take a look.
41:27So there's something big under our feet.
41:29I want to jump out of my skin.
41:34This is big. This is big.
41:36This is huge.
41:39What is that?
41:40Oh my god.
41:42This is Captain Kidd's treasure.
41:44I want to ding-p spaced.
41:46.
42:00.
