00:00Walking across, Rockets won't foul, ball game over, Warriors win and take a two games to one lead in this best of seven series.
00:09Jalen Green and Draymond Green screaming at each other as they head off the floor.
00:15Spicy.
00:16It's spicy, it's the playoffs. It's supposed to be spicy.
00:20104-93, Golden State with a win.
00:23Stephen Curry, at the end of the first quarter, had two points.
00:27But he finishes with 36.
00:31Oh, he certainly does, Tim Roy. It was spicy.
00:35104-93, the final.
00:37That call right here on 95.7 The Game, your home for Golden State Warriors basketball.
00:41Dubs on top, 2-1 in this series.
00:44Game four tonight.
00:47Can they put a choke hold on it officially? We will find out.
00:50But, man, feels like a squandered opportunity.
00:53No Jimmy Butler, no problem.
00:56Because you know why, Joe Shasky?
00:59You got the chef.
01:0036 big ones.
01:02Doesn't matter what Fred Van Vliet's doing.
01:04Doesn't matter how many flopping Alperin Shane Goon's doing.
01:07Doesn't matter how many shots Amen Thompson's missing.
01:10Maybe he does need to go to church and say amen instead of amen.
01:13Because that jumper is broken.
01:16We got the Buddy Heald game, people!
01:18Yay, Buddy!
01:20We never doubted him.
01:21Never.
01:21Never.
01:22And Gary Payton II, GP2, Young Glove, Clutch.
01:27Huge win.
01:28Huge.
01:29Two-piece beans and rice, all spice, Nicotina.
01:33Oh, I love that.
01:33Let me tell you, that was such a fun game.
01:36My voice is still a little sore from how great it was.
01:38I can tell.
01:39You were yelling a lot, huh?
01:40Yeah, yeah.
01:41That was just...
01:42Steph Curry, you know, look, GP2's going to get a lot of appropriate adoration.
01:47Obviously, Draymond Green defensively down the stretch was awesome.
01:52I mean, just awesome.
01:54The Rockets coming out to play.
01:56Steph's floor game was unbelievable.
01:58Obviously, everyone's going to point to his shooting ability and the gravity and all the
02:03different things that he does when the ball's in his hands.
02:06But I thought the way he was passing the ball and the way he set up for others, the way
02:11that he was controlling the tempo and coming off screens, multiple GP2 left-handed layups
02:18were there because Steph comes flaring over on this circular screen and they just do a
02:24fake handoff.
02:25And he did exactly what Draymond does forever.
02:27That little fake kind of like RPO, dribble drive handoff as we like to call it, and just
02:33right to the lane.
02:34And, you know, they did so many really, really good things on defense in this one.
02:39I thought they did a better job staying in front of guys.
02:42No one wants to admit this, but Dylan Brooks has actually been really good for the Rockets.
02:47Outside of him, who's been reliable game to game?
02:50Well, they got their Fred Van Vliet game, but that was in the first quarter.
02:54Outside of the first quarter, he only made one other shot.
02:56So they got that.
02:56He was the one keeping them afloat in that first quarter when they had 22 to 18 lead after
03:00one.
03:01And it felt like, okay, Fred Van Vliet can get his.
03:04You know why?
03:04He's six feet tall.
03:05I think we could.
03:06I don't think he's going to keep this up the entire game.
03:08And he couldn't after the first quarter.
03:10He was cooked.
03:11Amen, Thompson, Amen, whatever you want to call it.
03:13His jumper's just, it's just not there.
03:16And scoring is at a premium in this series.
03:20And you've seen it with the Houston Rockets.
03:21And when you have one of, if not the greatest offensive player in the history of the game
03:26in Stephen Curry, yeah, that's a big difference.
03:29I know there was no Jimmy Butler.
03:30So if you're Houston, you felt like, man, we couldn't win that without Jimmy.
03:33Now the Warriors are feeling the confidence is sky high.
03:35Not that they needed the confidence to win without Jimmy.
03:38It just feels good to know that you can do it because this team without Jimmy Butler
03:42for the most of the season was not very good.
03:44They were an average team at best.
03:46So the fact that they were able to do it and get it done on Saturday, and it was the way
03:50they got it done.
03:52Yes, Steph, as you alluded to.
03:53Quinton Post was very impressed.
03:55I know shooting the ball wasn't great for him.
03:57He was nasty.
03:5812 rebounds?
03:59Yeah.
03:59For QP?
04:00Huge.
04:01Four assists as well?
04:02And throwing Stephen Adams at one point.
04:04Yeah.
04:04It was incredible to see that happen.
04:06Well, Stephen Adams also happened.
04:07Hey, Stephen Adams.
04:08He was going to happen.
04:09How about him picking Buddy at the time?
04:10And that was a great Buddy game.
04:12I don't want to.
04:13But it was a hell of a pick.
04:13What do I like to call him, though, at times?
04:16Buddy Butterfingers.
04:16That's what he is at times.
04:17It gets away from him.
04:18That's what happens.
04:19I might be in the minority here.
04:20And Jimmy Butler says don't dribble.
04:22He does not want him dribbling at all.
04:24But he was really good in this game.
04:25Outside of the three-point shots, I thought he was active.
04:27He was rebounding.
04:28I thought he was defending as well as he can and got a couple of loose balls.
04:32I thought he was brilliant in this one.
04:34If Stephen Adams is ever available, the Warriors should be looking at him for the remainder of his career.
04:39Ooh, I'm not mad at that.
04:40He is one of the best offensive rebounders in the game.
04:43Clearly a load.
04:44He just knows what his job is.
04:46Like, sign me up for Stephen Adams for the rest of his career.
04:49If he's available, we should be going to get him.
04:51Him and Draymond are going to bury the hatchet, if you will.
04:53Do you think there's any bad blood still from the OKC days?
04:57Huh?
04:57No?
04:58I don't think you bury hatchets with Aquaman.
05:01I think you have to...
05:03What is the spear called?
05:05The Trident.
05:05The Trident.
05:06You're asking Trident.
05:07You have to harpoon the Trident, I guess.
05:09There we go.
05:10Shout out to those watching on Twitch, Twitter, and YouTube.
05:13All powered by First NorCal Credit Union.
05:16For a low-rate auto loan, apply online, or just ask for First NorCal financing at the dealer.
05:19And as always, we are coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
05:23Laughing Monk, righteously brewed here in San Francisco.
05:27And you mentioned it, Brandon Pajemski.
05:30You mentioned Quinton Post.
05:31We've mentioned Buddy Heald.
05:33All these different players.
05:34Gary Payton.
05:34It was a total strength in numbers victory when you did not have Jimmy Butler.
05:38And we found out the news a little bit before the game, about like an hour or two before.
05:43Anthony Slater, Sham Sharania, all the different reporters had it.
05:46So no Jimmy Buckets.
05:47What were they going to go to?
05:48Well, they ended up doing a couple things.
05:51They inserted Quinton Post into the starting lineup, which you've seen in the past.
05:54And Jonathan Kaminga got the start.
05:57So it was Draymond, JK, QP, Stephen Curry, and Brandon Pajemski.
06:01Moses Moody got shifted to the bench.
06:03Wasn't his best game offensively.
06:04I thought he did a couple things here and there.
06:06But it was not as great.
06:07It was his greatest game shooting the ball.
06:09But you know what?
06:10Neither here nor there.
06:10He won the game.
06:11So I'm not going to focus on that.
06:13Jimmy Butler, did you see the outfit he had on him?
06:14I was going to get to that.
06:16The coat was, it was something.
06:17Was that mink?
06:19Well, I don't know if that's, I don't know.
06:20I don't, is that, do we do that anymore?
06:22I thought it was.
06:23See, I don't want to, it's a Pita.
06:24I have no problem.
06:25I'm going to be real with you.
06:26Pita, I don't care about you.
06:27Just saying.
06:28It does not matter to me.
06:29Just saying.
06:30You know, pelts are what, you know, this country was founded on early on in the early days of the frontier.
06:36So I have no problem with that.
06:38Simultaneously, he had on this yoga outfit that my wife and one of my cousins, Alexis, they were talking about.
06:45Aloe, aloe, yoga.
06:47It was like a brown.
06:48Couldn't tell you.
06:49It's like a Lululemon, very, is that how it's pronounced?
06:52I don't even know.
06:53He just looks so saucy on the side.
06:55Well, I just like, I just love a good, like, fur coat.
06:59I do.
06:59I'm a sucker for, who's my guy?
07:01Joe Namath?
07:02Hollywood Joe?
07:03Come on.
07:04When I take mink coat, I think Cameron, but that's fine.
07:06I say Hollywood Joe.
07:07The point of this game, here was the moment in the game, okay?
07:11Tari Eason hits a middie, and they go up 34-22, and Steve Kerr calls a timeout.
07:16And Jay Billis says, as they're cutting the break, Jay Billis says,
07:20who besides Curry can do anything in this game or do something in this game?
07:26I'm paraphrasing.
07:28Who besides Curry can do something in this game?
07:31And then there's a loose ball foul, a couple of off-ball fouls, a big step three on a QP inbound,
07:39and they're down 12, basically, 49-37.
07:43And they're going back and forth and back and forth.
07:46There's two minutes to go with a little bit of change in the second quarter.
07:51Again, down 12.
07:53It felt like any momentum that they had was kind of all in the Rockets' favor.
07:58I'll say this with the Rockets, though.
07:59I know Bonte had the stat when they've led by 10 or more at any point of the season.
08:03They're like 49-7 or 8, something like that.
08:05I'm paraphrasing, if you will, but it's something around that.
08:07They're really good when they have a 10-point lead because their defense is so damn good,
08:11and they can sit on it, right?
08:12But it just felt like, though, yesterday, outside of Fred Van Vliet and Dylan Brooks,
08:17and really it was just Fred Van Vliet in that first quarter, because outside of that,
08:19he turned into a very inefficient scorer.
08:21Dylan Brooks, as you mentioned, he was the only guy that was pretty efficient.
08:244 of 8, 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.
08:26He had some big shots for them.
08:28But Shane Goon was not very good.
08:30Jalen Green, who dropped 30, was not very good.
08:33Just a game prior.
08:34Jabari Smith, I thought, showed up off the bench.
08:37Defensively, too, I thought he was one of their better players.
08:38He made some big three-point shots.
08:40But again, Joe, you're going to get games like you got Game 2.
08:45They can't do that four times in this series, what they did in Game 2.
08:48Game 3 and Game 1 is what I expect from this Houston Rockets offense,
08:52and that's what we got.
08:53But at the end of the second quarter, like after the end of the first quarter,
08:56I know, I hear you.
08:57They closed really well, the Rockets, at the end of that first quarter.
09:00And it was like, ah!
09:01You know, at the end of the second quarter, down 12, buddy, 8 points,
09:06Steph making plays.
09:07It's the way they finished the half, to me, set the tone for the rest of the game.
09:12They cut it to a three-point game right before halftime.
09:14They had all the momentum.
09:16I believe Pods had the ball at the end of that half.
09:19They could have only been down one.
09:21But to be down 49-46 after the way that second quarter played out,
09:25I thought that was the game right then and there.
09:28Having watched it back, I know there was moments in time where the Rockets took the lead
09:32and whatnot, especially in the fourth quarter, and they were trading buckets.
09:36But if you don't cut that 12-point lead where Tari Heaston hits a three
09:39and basically puts it at a 12-point lead, it might have been, you know,
09:46we're looking at this as must-win today in the other direction.
09:49Well, and it's so refreshing to see because how many times have you seen this Warriors team,
09:54even in the Jimmy Butler era, their failure to close quarters and halves is maddening at times,
10:02whether it's careless turnovers, whether it's not paying attention to the final seconds
10:05when the opposing team gets another last-second shot off.
10:09Them and their ability to close at the end of this game in each and every quarter, if you will,
10:14was massive for them, and it does carry momentum.
10:17I truly believe that in a given game, not a series because everything can change, right?
10:21Because Jalen Green can have a big game in Game 2 and Game 3 can have a stinker.
10:24But in a given game, we've talked about this, there is such a thing as momentum
10:28and carrying that into halftime, like Steph was feeling himself.
10:31You saw him going into the tunnel, like he was doing the little shimmies.
10:34He was like, all right, all right, we're here.
10:36Bouncing there, Steph.
10:36Yes, yes.
10:37And even at the start of the third quarter, when they go on a quick 7-0 run, the Rockets,
10:41when they do go up, it's like, okay, they calm down, get a timeout,
10:44and they get back into the groove of things.
10:46And again, everyone's stepping up on Saturday.
10:50Buddy Heald, 5 of 11.
10:51We finally got the Buddy Heald game.
10:53Wasn't the most efficient game, had a couple turnovers and some inopportune times.
10:56I thought he was really good.
10:57But I thought he was active defensively.
10:59Three steals for Buddy.
11:01Gary Payton, again, cannot say enough about the young glove.
11:04And look, 7 of 9, 2 of 3.
11:06To be fair with GP2, you know, he hadn't looked great.
11:09No, we were talking about this not being maybe his series.
11:12And you know what?
11:13Look, two things.
11:14Credit him for taking the most, you know, taking advantage of the – I kind of – I think
11:19with Jimmy off the floor, it kind of opens things up for him to be a penetrator at times
11:25where he's got single coverage.
11:27He's not just relegated to being a corner 3 guy.
11:29Now, if Jimmy comes back, his role will alter.
11:32He'll go back to that dunker spot.
11:33But I think they utilize him in a different way.
11:35And that's where I go with, like, Kerr.
11:37You know, Kerr went with Moody and GP2 and I believe – what was the start?
11:42So it was Steph, Moody, Buddy, Dre, QP to start that quarter.
11:46Yes.
11:46And then Steph came out.
11:48He went with GP2 and then stuck with GP2 down the stretch.
11:52Yep.
11:53So I credit Steve Kerr.
11:54And, you know, you bring up Kaminga.
11:56Kaminga had a couple of big buckets in the third quarter.
11:59I thought it was a mixed bag overall.
12:01There was some good.
12:02There was some bad.
12:02Like, you know, he's guarding Jalen Green, the inbounder.
12:05And he's got basically – he's too tight to Jalen Green,
12:09who's not necessarily someone you need to face guard, you know,
12:13coming out of an inbound play.
12:15Maybe you lay off him a little.
12:17You have to stay between him, the ball, and the hoop.
12:20And he allows a backdoor cut.
12:21Like, those are the little things that are going to keep him off the floor.
12:24But then he makes a couple of big iso plays later on.
12:27So he didn't play in the fourth quarter.
12:29He went with GP2.
12:31I like going with GP2.
12:33GP2 had it rolling.
12:34Hits a couple layups.
12:35Hits the corner three.
12:37Like, Steve Kerr was in his bag, too.
12:39No, let's give credit to Steve Kerr when credit is due.
12:42Because the amount of people that want to crush him,
12:44whether it was after game two or any L that they're going to have the rest of the way.
12:47Because I promise you, when the Warriors lose another game,
12:49and it might not be in this series or the next series,
12:51everyone's going to blame the head coach first and foremost.
12:53Because that's just what we like to do.
12:54Whether it's Shanahan, whether it's Kerr, whether it's Bob Melvin.
12:57Look at the Lakers this morning.
12:58Look at J.J. Reddick getting absolutely eviscerated because you know what?
13:02He played all of his starters the entire second half, and they lost.
13:05They blew a big lead, and they lost.
13:06And they're down 3-1 now.
13:08And it's probably night-night on Luka, night-night on LeBron, night-night on Austin Reeves.
13:11Real quick, that's what the Warriors have an opportunity to do tonight to the Rockets.
13:16Don't let that team come back into this series and push it.
13:19Because you know what?
13:21And I get it.
13:21And then maybe the Lakers win game five or whatever.
13:23I don't know.
13:24It's an uphill battle, though.
13:25It's an uphill battle for a team that's old, and their best player was 40 years old.
13:30And he's exhausted because he was the only other player playing defense on that team
13:33outside of Dorian Finney-Smith.
13:35Austin Reeves couldn't guard a nosebleed.
13:37Luka Doncic was getting attacked.
13:38And credit to Anthony freaking Edwards.
13:40God, that guy's box office.
13:41He is incredible.
13:43He is absolutely incredible.
13:44He's so damn good.
13:45An incredible weekend of sports, by the way.
13:47Just the NBA playoffs.
13:48Obviously, the draft.
13:49And I know Giants with the Little League walk-off home run.
13:52That was insane.
13:54Poor Luke Jackson gets the L on that one.
13:56I was like, oh my.
13:57What a great giant.
13:58What a great giant, right?
13:59Elliott Ramos getting that run in.
14:01Great call from Kike, by the way.
14:03Your point on the Lakers is a great one.
14:04So yesterday, you know, you have no game.
14:06You're still decompressing from how fun the Saturday night game was.
14:10I love Saturday night games.
14:11No, they're great.
14:12They're not great for radio because we lose a little momentum.
14:14Well, it's okay.
14:15You mentioned Jay Billis, who was on the call for ESPN.
14:17I was on Mike Jones.
14:18He's going to join us at 8.30.
14:19He's going to go to the River Island's guest line.
14:20I thought he was great.
14:21I'm not the biggest, what's the other guy's name?
14:23Mark Jones.
14:24Mark Jones.
14:24Yeah, I'm not the biggest Mark Jones guy, but that's fine.
14:27I thought Jay, though, real quick, being able to go from college to the pros, like it's
14:32seamless for him.
14:33Kirk Herbstreet, I know it's not your favorite.
14:35So like there is, like that guy's a college guy.
14:37I don't really buy it.
14:38But Jay, the way he's able to break it down with his humor involved in it, too, I thought
14:42it was great.
14:42And obviously, he's smart.
14:43He's very smart.
14:44Well, he's a dude guy, obviously.
14:45No, I mean, like when I'm watching the game, not only does he say the obvious, but he tells
14:50me like the next layer, right?
14:52You know, he's talking about how Curry's gravity and he's explaining how, look, when this guy
14:57moves, there's a wave of people that have to honor him.
15:00And he kept saying what we've all kind of been saying, like in Warrior Land, if you're
15:03an astute follower, which is, guys, you're going to get advantageous opportunities in
15:09matchups.
15:10And if you're not a threat offensively, you're making it harder on yourself and on Steph Curry.
15:15I mean, he said it three times.
15:16I thought the quote of the day, and I'm going to ask him about it, Jay Billis, who besides
15:21Curry can do something in this game?
15:23Well, Buddy Heal did.
15:24Well, GP2 did.
15:26Quinton Post, though he didn't score, I thought he made plays defensively.
15:30Draymond Green was awesome defensively.
15:32So you're going to need contributions from the others.
15:35But Steph Curry's floor game as a point guard, as a facilitator, as a shot maker, defensively,
15:42he had big rebounds.
15:43He had a couple of steals.
15:45I thought Steph Curry's floor game was spectacular.
