00:00Money is not the root of all evil.
00:05The Bible just does not say that.
00:06The Bible says the love of money is the root of all evil.
00:10And anytime we worship anything in the culture today,
00:13there are voices out there that are very, very loud and very pronounced
00:17and are supposedly steeped in intelligence
00:20that are giving us the message that money is the root of all evil.
00:23If you believe that money is evil,
00:26it naturally follows in a logical progression
00:29that people who have money must be evil.
00:33And so we get to vilify people who have become successful.
00:38This is a dangerous socioeconomic psychographic trend.
00:44It's very dangerous because anytime you vilify success,
00:47then no one wants to become successful.
00:50Because if you're successful, you're evil and you're evil
00:52because money is evil and you got some.
00:55You follow the progression.
00:57It's not real tough.
00:58But this drumbeat is out there.
01:00And you and I have a problem.
01:01And this culture has a problem
01:02because there's an inconsistency that goes with this.
01:05Let me help you with this.
01:06If your household income, and by the way,
01:08the average American household income is $50,000 a year.
01:12That's the average American household income right now,
01:14according to the Census Bureau.
01:15It's actually just a little bit over that.
01:17But if your household income makes considerably less than the average
01:20and your average household income is $34,000 a year,
01:25you are in the top 1% of income earners in the world.
01:31If you make $11,000 a year,
01:34which puts you substantially below the federal poverty line,
01:37you are in the top 14% of income earners in the world.
01:41Translation, most of the families in this arena today are rich.
01:48And if money is evil and rich people are evil,
01:50I'm looking at a bunch of evil people.
01:53This is a problem, you guys.
01:55This is a serious problem.
01:57Now, I know you don't feel rich,
01:59and I know probably your family doesn't feel rich
02:01because you get to compare yourself to people who are richer.
02:03But you're in the top 1% of the world.
02:07So when people start vilifying the building of wealth,
02:12especially when it's with a positive use,
02:14it creates this hypocrisy in the marketplace
02:17because the very people who are saying in the marketplace,
02:21doing this drumbeat about wealth is evil,
02:24are by definition wealthy people.
02:26And the problem is, in other words,
02:28that in North America today,
02:29we are the most successful group of people of this size,
02:35the United States of America,
02:38in the history of humankind.
02:41Financially, the United States of America
02:42is the largest group of financially successful people
02:46in the history of humankind.
02:49But you need to understand that there was a cause and effect
02:51of sowing and a reaping thing that caused that to happen.
02:53The reason you and I are so wealthy
02:55as compared to the rest of the world
02:58is the Judeo-Christian ethic
03:00that is underlying our entire economy and our belief system.
03:03Even if you're not a Christian, a person of faith,
03:06that doesn't matter.
03:07You still are operating in a culture
03:09that functions with the value system
03:11of a Judeo-Christian ethic.
03:13Let me give you an example.
03:14We believe in this country that you should tell the truth.
03:16And if a company doesn't tell the truth,
03:18if you go to get your car fixed
03:19and they lie to you,
03:21that is considered a breach of ethics
03:22and people do not do business with that mechanic again
03:25and he goes out of business.
03:26If they lie to you at the doctor's office,
03:29you don't go back to that doctor's office.
03:30We don't believe in lying.
03:33Integrity, however, is not viewed that way
03:35universally around the world.
03:37Some cultures, it's actually,
03:38the ethic is that if you can mess someone over,
03:41you've done something good.
03:42Now that's a foreign concept to us
03:44because an ethic is so rooted in who we are as a people.
03:47The second thing is, is we believe in service.
03:49And guess what?
03:50How service works in the marketplace.
03:52See, we believe in worship service on Sunday,
03:54but on Monday we believe in customer service.
03:57Whether you're a person of faith or not,
03:58you believe those things.
03:59You believe in good customer service.
04:01You believe that's how things ought to be done.
04:03They had bad customer service over there.
04:05We believe in good service.
04:06As a matter of fact,
04:07my wife and I went out on our date night a while back.
04:10She joined me.
04:10I was speaking in Phoenix two weeks ago
04:11and she joined me down in Phoenix
04:12and we had a date night at a sweet restaurant.
04:17I'll just tell you,
04:17the more books I sell,
04:18the better my date nights are.
04:20It's incredible, man.
04:22And we go to one of these restaurants.
04:24You know, I'm talking about white tablecloth.
04:26You recline at the table
04:28because you're going to be there a while.
04:29And they're bringing food.
04:31My mouth's watering just talking about it, you guys.
04:34They're bringing the food.
04:36And we ate.
04:37Oh, went into a coma.
04:38We ate.
04:38Oh, it's amazing.
04:40But you know what happens
04:41in one of those environments,
04:42if you've ever been able to do that,
04:44is the person who brings the food to the table,
04:46your server,
04:48we believe in service,
04:50by the end of that meal,
04:51they're not just someone
04:52who slops some food on the table.
04:54By the end of that meal,
04:55they're a family member.
04:56You don't know what I'm talking about.
04:57And you know what is customary and proper to do?
05:00If you were served well,
05:02at the end of the meal,
05:04you say thank you.
05:05And there's a universal language
05:06for saying thank you to servers.
05:08It's called money.
05:10And you leave a tip.
05:12And in a meal like that,
05:13you leave a big honking tip.
05:16Because this is now your friend.
05:18You've got a connection.
05:20In our culture,
05:21we believe in rewarding service.
05:22Customers that are served well
05:24don't mind paying
05:26an organization for service.
05:28My friend Rabbi Lappin,
05:29who is an Orthodox Jewish rabbi,
05:31he says that in the marketplace,
05:32when you serve well,
05:33your customers give you
05:34certificates of appreciation
05:35with president's faces on them.
05:37We customarily say thank you.
05:39And we issue a certificate of appreciation
05:41when someone fixes my water heater
05:43at my house.
05:44When someone fixes my car
05:46or changes the tire on it.
05:47We give certificates of appreciation
05:49for service in this culture.
05:51My friend Ken Blanchard says
05:52profit is the applause
05:54your customers give you.
05:55This is why our society has prospered.
06:00These are just two of the ethics,
06:01service and integrity
06:02that have caused that to happen.
06:04But we have a problem.
06:05There are really three proper views
06:07of wealth and possession,
06:09or three possible views
06:10of wealth and possessions.
06:13I'll go ahead and tell you ahead of time,
06:14two of them are wrong,
06:15one of them is right,
06:16and I have done all three,
06:18which means I've done it wrong some.
06:19More times than I'd like to admit
06:21in here today.
06:22The first spirit is a spirit of pride.
06:26Pride says money comes from me.
06:30Now this is the one I fell into
06:32the first time,
06:33and I can fall back into it too,
06:35because I believe in hard work.
06:37Money comes from me.
06:38I believe work is where money comes from,
06:40and I think people ought to work.
06:42I created money.
06:44I, money came from me.
06:45My success came from me.
06:47Now these are performance-oriented individuals
06:49who check a box spiritually
06:51in their performance things.
06:52I've been there and done that,
06:54and people that fall into this spirit of pride,
06:56like I have.
06:58We like Bible verses that say things like,
07:00those that won't work,
07:01don't let them eat.
07:02We like Bible verses that say things like,
07:04the diligent prosper,
07:05or when you're faithful with the little,
07:07more is given to you to manage.
07:09You will reap what you sow.
07:11I love those kinds of verses.
07:13Ramsey family's hard-working people.
07:15There wasn't a whole lot I learned growing up
07:17from my dad and mom,
07:18but one of the things I learned for sure
07:20was work.
07:21I asked my dad one time for some money
07:23to go down to the local market
07:24and get an icy.
07:25He handed me a lawnmower.
07:27Work.
07:28I believe in hard work,
07:29and I believe in those scriptures,
07:31but I don't believe that the farmer
07:33plants seed,
07:35and when it rains,
07:36and the crop comes up and says,
07:38didn't I do good with that rain thing?
07:40I'm pretty good at this rain thing.
07:43That crop was about all the result of my work.
07:46That's a dangerous place to be.
07:49Sometimes those of us that fall into that category,
07:52we might be politically conservative.
07:54Sometimes we might vote Republican.
07:56It could happen.
07:57Oh, I'll get to the others.
07:58Don't wait.
07:59The second spirit is the spirit of poverty.
08:02The spirit of poverty says,
08:03wealth is evil.
08:05Possessions are evil.
08:06By the way,
08:07this is a form of Gnosticism,
08:08which is a type of heresy.
08:10God does not say wealth is evil
08:12anywhere in the scriptures.
08:13Nor does he say wealthy people are evil
08:15anywhere in the scriptures.
08:16Nor does he say wealthy people can't get to heaven
08:18anywhere in the scriptures,
08:19once you understand what the scripture really says.
08:22That Jesus' blood and sacrifice on Calvary
08:25will get a prostitute into heaven,
08:27a murderer into heaven if they accept Christ,
08:29will get an adulterer into heaven
08:31if they accept Christ.
08:32He can do all of that,
08:34but if you're successful and become wealthy,
08:36you're not going.
08:38This is your doctrine?
08:39These are the thought leaders,
08:41supposedly, in our culture today?
08:43You've got to be kidding me.
08:45It's absolutely absurd.
08:46Spirit of poverty says things like,
08:48the little man can't get ahead.
08:50The deck is stacked against us.
08:51I've got a relative who's bitter and beat up,
08:53and he just says,
08:54the corporations,
08:54the corporations,
08:55the corporations.
08:57I don't even know what he means by that,
08:59but apparently they're taking over,
09:01the corporations.
09:03It's this vague boogeyman
09:04that this 60-year-old bitter man has in his head
09:07who loves conspiracy theories of all kinds.
09:10The little man can't get ahead.
09:11It's the Rockefellers.
09:13What?
09:14Seriously?
09:15You live in Tennessee.
09:16The Rockefellers aren't even there.
09:18It's unbelievable.
09:19It's all fixed.
09:20The little man can't get ahead.
09:21You don't know how it is out there.
09:23Yeah, I do.
09:23I started out with nothing.
09:24Became a millionaire by the time I was 26.
09:26I was so stupid,
09:27I borrowed money,
09:27and I lost it all.
09:29I had to start over.
09:30I'm so dumb,
09:31I had to become a millionaire from nothing twice.
09:34The little man can get ahead.
09:35This is the only place in the world,
09:37by the way,
09:37that the little man can get ahead.
09:3988% of America's millionaires
09:41are first-generation rich.
09:42They started with nothing.
09:43Nine out of 10 of them became wealthy.
09:45It's mythology that it was a silver spoon.
09:47It's people who got up,
09:48left the cave,
09:49killed something,
09:50and dragged it home.
09:51But a spirit of poverty says,
09:53wealth is evil.
09:54Wealth is of the devil.
09:55Sometimes these people
09:56are socially liberal,
09:58politically liberal.
10:00Sometimes they vote Democrat.
10:02Now, there's socially liberal Democrats
10:04and socially conservative Republicans
10:06who don't fall into those categories.
10:09I will give you that benefit of the doubt
10:10in either case,
10:11wherever you fall.
10:12But those two spirits,
10:14I have done both of them.
10:15I have said it.
10:16You know,
10:16this spirit of poverty
10:17has two cousins named jealousy and envy.
10:20Jealousy is,
10:20I want what you have.
10:21Envy is,
10:22I don't think I can have what you have,
10:24so I don't even want you to have it.
10:26My Catholic brothers and sisters
10:27call that one of the seven deadly sins.
10:29Spirit of envy.
10:31And that's loose in the land.
10:32But it only works,
10:34and it's only noble
10:35if you believe money
10:36to be the root of all evil.
10:38And it creates things like
10:40a friend of mine
10:41who's worth $2.2 billion.
10:43I got to sit in this room,
10:44you guys,
10:45with this group of Christian men
10:47who are all very wealthy.
10:49The minimum net worth in the place
10:51was a half a billion,
10:52$500 million.
10:53And I got to sit in there.
10:54I was like a wiener in a steakhouse, y'all.
10:57And listen to the billion dollars plus
11:01that these 10 men
11:02and their families gave
11:04to kingdom work that year.
11:07We got up to leave the room,
11:08and the wealthiest guy in the room
11:09who had called the meeting,
11:11it was a Christian philanthropist meeting,
11:13we're going to his house for dinner,
11:15and he said,
11:16hey, Dave, would you ride with me?
11:17And I said, oh, you betcha.
11:18I just want to kind of rub up against you.
11:19What are you talking about?
11:21Any, you know, yes, I'll ride with you.
11:22Whatever.
11:23Take notes the whole time.
11:25And he said,
11:25but I got to apologize for my car.
11:26And I said, why, dude?
11:27You driving a hoopty?
11:28I mean, if you're driving a beater,
11:29I got a pretty good rental car.
11:30We can take it.
11:31Why would you be driving?
11:32Why would you be apologizing for your car?
11:34And he said,
11:34I just bought the nicest car
11:35I've ever bought in my life.
11:36He's 68 years old.
11:38I said, really?
11:39Why would you be ashamed of that?
11:42He said, well, it's a nice car.
11:43I said, well, you got a lot of money.
11:46It's okay.
11:47And so we go out there,
11:48and I looked at it,
11:49and it was a nice car.
11:50I know,
11:51because I went home and looked at them
11:52when I got back.
11:53It was a nice car.
11:56Sweet.
11:57$130,000 Mercedes.
11:59Now, let me help you with this guy.
12:01This is an interesting guy.
12:03He has $2.2 billion.
12:05Last year,
12:06he gave away $370 million.
12:1098% of that you will never know happened.
12:14Why?
12:14He doesn't care what you think.
12:16He doesn't worship you.
12:19He's not taking a poll
12:20on what the right thing to do is.
12:22So he buys a $130,000 car.
12:24Guess what?
12:24He gets hate mail from Christians saying,
12:26well, you should have drilled him
12:27another well in Africa.
12:28Somewhere there's a starving child,
12:30and you only gave away $370 million,
12:32but that car,
12:34now I question your spirituality.
12:35So a translation is,
12:37Christians,
12:37some of them in America,
12:38think that there's a certain level of car
12:40you can drive and lose your salvation.
12:42So we've done detailed research,
12:44and I'll help you with that.
12:45It's a 93 Camry.
12:46Anything nicer than a 93 Camry,
12:48you're going to hell.
12:50Seriously, people.
12:52Is this the kind of filth
12:53that's running through our culture today?
12:56This is ridiculous.
12:57So we go out there,
12:58and I drive home in his car with him,
13:00and it's really nice.
13:01And I got to thinking about it.
13:02These people sending him hate mail
13:05have no idea, obviously,
13:07what they're talking about.
13:07Let me help you with the ratios with this.
13:09If you have $2.2 billion
13:11and you give away $370 million,
13:14buying a $130,000 car
13:16is like you and me buying a biscuit.
13:20And remember,
13:21you all come from wealthy, rich families
13:23when compared to the rest of the world.
13:25And so you should be ashamed
13:27of whatever level of consumption you have.
13:30So ratios are important
13:32to avoid, you know,
13:34to make sure you're in the last category.
13:36Oh, by the way,
13:36that category, spirit of poverty,
13:38should have sold that
13:39and given it to the poor.
13:40That's what people always say
13:41when they're trying to be holy.
13:42When they're judging someone else.
13:43Anybody has a house that nice
13:45shouldn't have done that.
13:46They should have given that money to the poor.
13:48Christians always say that
13:49when they're trying to figure out
13:50how to judge somebody else.
13:52And really what happens is
13:53is you're dealing with an area
13:54you shouldn't be dealing with
13:55because it's none-ya.
13:56None-ya business.
13:57It's not your stuff.
13:58God didn't give it to you to manage.
13:59If he gave it to you to manage,
14:00then it'd be your problem.
14:01Otherwise, you need to shut up.
14:04You're judging something
14:05you don't have any idea about.
14:07You know what I mean?
14:07Grasp of.
14:08The last one is the proper spirit.
14:11And that's the spirit of gratitude.
14:12And a spirit of gratitude says,
14:14thank you.
14:15Thank you for giving me the money
14:16to take care of my family
14:17and put food on the table
14:18and buy a decent car
14:19and take my wife of 31 years on a vacation.
14:21Thank you for providing for my future.
14:23Where there is no vision,
14:24the people perish.
14:24And in the house of the wise
14:26are stores of choice food and oil.
14:28Wise people save money
14:29so they can retire with dignity.
14:30Thank you that I can leave
14:31an inheritance to my children
14:32because a good man
14:33leaves an inheritance
14:34to his children's children.
14:35Remember that David
14:36didn't build the temple.
14:37Solomon did with his dad's money.
14:40It was an inheritance.
14:41It was an inheritance.
14:43Generational wealth is biblical.
14:45Go figure.
14:46This is a spirit of gratitude.
14:48When your dad works overtime
14:49and he gets you a new bicycle
14:51and the family's barely making it
14:53but he takes the graveyard shift
14:55and you know your family
14:57really can't afford that bicycle
14:58but on Christmas morning
14:59the bicycle you knew
15:00your family couldn't afford
15:01is still sitting there
15:02in front of the tree
15:03because of the price
15:04your daddy paid.
15:05You know what you are?
15:06You're grateful.
15:08And you show your gratitude
15:09for the bicycle
15:10by the way you take care of it.
15:12That's not a bicycle
15:13that gets left in the rain.
15:14That's a bicycle
15:15that when it gets dirty
15:16you get your daddy's wax out
15:17that he uses on the car
15:18and you clean the bicycle.
15:20That's a bicycle
15:20that's taken care of.
15:22That's a bicycle
15:22that years later
15:23when you find it in the attic
15:24as a grown man
15:25it brings a lump in your throat
15:26because the price
15:27your daddy paid.
15:29Your gratitude is real
15:31and it's displayed
15:32by the way you handle
15:33the thing you were given.
15:35When you start to understand
15:36that about money and wealth
15:38you will learn
15:39that the Bible says
15:39to get out of debt
15:40and stay out of debt.
15:41You will learn
15:42that the Bible says
15:42to get on a budget
15:43because Jesus said
15:44don't build a tower
15:45without first counting the cost
15:46lest you get halfway up
15:47and you're unable to finish
15:48and all who see you
15:49begin to mock you
15:50and say this man
15:50began to build
15:51and was unable to finish.
15:53You will understand
15:53that you spread your portions
15:54of your investments
15:55to seven yes to eight
15:56for disaster may come upon the land
15:57it says in Ecclesiastes.
15:59You will understand
15:59that you're supposed to save money
16:00because in the house of the wise
16:02are stores of choice food and oil
16:03but a foolish man
16:04devours all he has.
16:05If you spend everything you make
16:06you're a fool
16:07according to the Bible.
16:09I've operated with a spirit of poverty
16:10I've operated with a spirit of pride
16:12my goal as I get to be an old man
16:14is to more often
16:15be operating in a spirit of gratitude
16:17where I say
16:18thank you Lord
16:19and not just with my mouth
16:21but with my actions
16:22of excellence
16:23in the marketplace.
16:26My actions of excellence
16:27in the handling
16:28of the money
16:30and the wealth
16:30and the possessions
16:31he gives me
16:32to manage
16:33for his glory.
16:35I did not believe
16:36it was a shame
16:37I said
16:38toвал
16:38Jai
16:40you
16:41He
16:43that
16:44and
16:46him
16:47he
16:47he
