Spain and Portugal hit by sweeping power outage: Here is what we know

Spain’s Interior Ministry declared a state of emergency after a nationwide blackout paralysed much of the Iberian Peninsula. Work is still underway as technicians scramble to restore power.

00:00A state of emergency was declared in Spain after an unprecedented power outage swept
00:06through much of the Iberian Peninsula. The peninsula spanning across Spain and Portugal
00:11is home to more than 50 million people. In Spain, many major centers were affected by
00:17the blackout, including Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville. The blackout brought the affected
00:23areas to a standstill, disrupting airports, train services, telecommunications, traffic
00:29lights, ATMs, and more. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that 50% of the country's
00:35national power supply had been restored, noting that investigations to identify the cause
00:40are still ongoing.
00:59We still don't have any final information about the reasons of this court.
01:05Several officials have ruled out foul play as a potential cause, including European Council
01:10President António Costa. Portugal's two largest cities, Lisbon and Porto, were also dealing
01:15with similar challenges to those of their neighbors. The country's premier, Luiz Montenegro, said
01:21officials are working tirelessly to help those in need and to restore connectivity in the
01:25affected areas. Portugal's national grid operator, REN, said that almost all of the country's
01:3189 power substations have been fixed and that power was restored to more than 2.5 million people.
