00:00In the biting cold and icy winds, hundreds of people were trapped on a massive ship.
00:06Their bodies were slowly going numb, and with every passing second, they felt closer to death.
00:12The situation was rapidly deteriorating when suddenly, a strange commotion caught everyone's attention.
00:20The water level was rising steadily, and now it had reached the ship's engines, making things even worse.
00:28Within moments, the entire ship was engulfed in darkness, surrounded only by cold water and silence.
00:36Fear and panic were evident on everyone's faces.
00:39Would they survive?
00:42You've probably heard ships sailing through oceans filled with water, but have you ever heard of a ship navigating through an icy sea?
00:49The story of the MV Explorer is truly unique, because this ship wasn't cutting through water.
00:58It was smashing its way through huge chunks of ice.
01:01It was already 10 p.m., and outside it was pitch dark and freezing cold, with visibility extremely low.
01:10Most passengers were fast asleep in their cabins, while a few were relaxing inside the ship.
01:15Suddenly, a terrifying noise shook the entire vessel.
01:21A huge jolt.
01:23The ship came to a halt, and the captain, who had taken this route many times before, stayed calm.
01:31He had complete faith in the ship's strength and his own skills.
01:35He thought it was just a normal bump from hitting the thick layer of ice,
01:39and that the ship would continue moving forward like before.
01:42This ship had faced many icy challenges, but this time, things were different.
01:49The captain had no idea that there was a huge hole in the bottom of the ship.
01:54The situation was getting more dangerous by the minute,
01:57as water was rushing in fast, and the captain didn't even realize it.
02:02Neither did the passengers.
02:04They knew disaster was lurking right beneath their feet.
02:07With every passing second, icy water was closing in, ready to swallow the ship whole.
02:15It wasn't just a matter of whether the ship would sink.
02:18The real question was whether everyone would be able to escape in time,
02:23or if this ship would meet the same fate as the Titanic,
02:27vanishing into the freezing depths with its last breath.
02:30This wasn't just your typical maritime accident.
02:35It was a race between life and death.
02:37Would the MV Explorer manage to save itself from the dark, icy ocean,
02:43or would it fall prey to this vast empire of ice?
02:48To find out how it'll swallow you whole forever,
02:51watch the video until the end without skipping.
02:54Back in the 1960s, getting to places like Antarctica via the sea was really tough.
03:02No ship could take the risk of going there because of the heavy ice in the oceans.
03:08Just like in 1912 when the Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg,
03:13you can imagine how dangerous a trip to Antarctica could be.
03:17But a Swedish-American businessman named Erik Lindblad saw a golden opportunity in this.
03:23He thought, people want to travel to Antarctica.
03:28Why not build a ship that can safely navigate through icy rocks?
03:33With that idea, Erik had a strong ship developed that was so powerful
03:37it could break through thick ice in its path.
03:41This ship was named the Lindblad Explorer
03:43and started taking adventurous travelers to Antarctica
03:47who wanted to see its amazing world.
03:49In this way, Erik made a good profit with this unique ship
03:54and made trips to Antarctica possible.
03:57Although the ship wasn't very big, it was known for its strength.
04:01But when a ship goes into icy waters,
04:04an icebreaker is usually sent ahead to keep the ship safe by breaking the ice.
04:10However, the Lindblad Explorer was a unique ship that didn't need an icebreaker.
04:15Its front part was designed so that as it moved forward,
04:19its weight would break the ice.
04:22Still, for safety, the ship had double-layered lightweight armor,
04:27which kept it protected.
04:28If the ship hit the ice and the outer layer got damaged,
04:32the inner layer would keep the ship safe.
04:35The design proved to be incredibly successful,
04:37and the ship became popular worldwide.
04:40People started choosing this ship for trips to Antarctica from all over.
04:47It was so reliable that it rescued other stranded ships multiple times.
04:52Over the years, its ownership and name changed,
04:56but its performance was always top-notch.
04:59It was last bought in 2004 and renamed MV Explorer.
05:04On November 11, 2007, the ship set sail for Antarctica once again.
05:11It was going to be a 19-day journey for those boarding the vessel
05:15who had dreamed of seeing Antarctica.
05:18No one had any idea what was coming next.
05:22Everyone was super excited about the trip to Antarctica
05:24and totally trusted the strength of the ship.
05:27The captain, backed Wyman, had been through those icy waters many times before.
05:35Because of the ship's sturdiness and the captain's experience,
05:39the passengers felt safe.
05:41Everything was going smoothly until halfway through,
05:45but then the captain decided to take a new route.
05:48He thought this way would have less ice,
05:51and they'd get to their destination faster.
05:53But what he didn't know was,
05:56this route is leading them into difficulties.
06:01The first ten days of the journey go by smoothly,
06:04but then comes the night of November 22.
06:08That night, the ship had to navigate through thick layers of ice.
06:13The captain had already warned the passengers
06:15that there might be sounds of ice crunching,
06:18but there was no need to panic.
06:20He advised everyone to sleep peacefully.
06:24In the darkness of the night,
06:26the ship slowly broke through the ice,
06:29while the sounds of ice cracking echoed all around,
06:33and the passengers, unbothered,
06:35were sleeping in their cabins.
06:38The ship was moving through thin ice.
06:41They had already crossed the layers
06:42and were now moving through thick old ice,
06:45when suddenly there was a loud noise,
06:48and the ship jolted hard, coming to a stop.
06:52The sudden noise and jolt woke everyone up,
06:55but the captain had already warned them,
06:57so nobody took it seriously and tried to go back to sleep.
07:01The captain didn't really grasp what had happened either,
07:04and shrugged it off,
07:06trying to push the ship forward again.
07:09The ship started moving slowly through the ice,
07:12but after a little while,
07:14they could hear screaming and shouting
07:16coming from the passengers' cabins.
07:18The ship was starting to take on water quickly,
07:21because it had collided with a thick old iceberg,
07:24creating a huge hole in the bottom of the ship.
07:28The double hull didn't help at all with this crash.
07:31Water was rushing in fast,
07:34and passengers began to panic,
07:36scrambling to save themselves.
07:38When the captain heard that there was a big hole
07:40in the bottom of the ship,
07:42he couldn't believe it at first.
07:43He thought it was just a minor damage
07:46that could be fixed,
07:48but when he assessed the situation,
07:50he saw that water was rising really fast.
07:54His eyes went wide with shock
07:56as he realized that the ship was doomed.
07:59He immediately ordered his crew members
08:01to send out a distress signal,
08:03hoping that any nearby ships would pick it up
08:05and come to help.
08:06The water inside the ship was now so high
08:09that it started to tilt to one side.
08:12The crew quickly focused on calming the passengers
08:15and getting them into the lifeboats,
08:17since this ship was small
08:19and had very little chance of survival.
08:22The ship was about 46 kilometers from its destination,
08:26deep in the ocean,
08:28and in such bad shape
08:30that getting to shore was impossible.
08:32The passengers were left with no choice
08:35but to save themselves.
08:37Luckily,
08:38the distress signals sent out
08:40were picked up by two ships,
08:42but the problem was
08:43that they were still too far away
08:45to help the MV Explorer right away.
08:48To make matters worse,
08:49the passengers in the lifeboats
08:50were getting worse from the cold.
08:53Gradually,
08:54the water kept rising
08:55until it reached the room
08:56that powered the entire ship.
08:58A short circuit happened,
09:00and the entire ship lost power.
09:03Everyone had to evacuate,
09:04and all the crew and passengers
09:06were in the lifeboats.
09:08The captain was trying
09:09to get the ship upright,
09:11but there was so much water in it
09:13that the engine stopped working.
09:16The ship was sinking fast,
09:18and eventually,
09:19the captain decided
09:20to leave the ship too.
09:22He and the crew
09:23got into the lifeboats,
09:25and now they were just waiting
09:27in the cold wind and icy water
09:29for someone to come
09:30and rescue them,
09:32watching their ship
09:33disappear into the sea.
09:36The ship that used to rule the seas
09:38was now sunk deep in the ocean.
09:42Everyone on the lifeboats
09:43was watching this heartbreaking scene
09:45under the open sky.
09:47Hours passed in that cold water,
09:50and morning was approaching.
09:53Then they spotted lights
09:54in the distance coming toward them.
09:56One of the two ships
09:58that received the distress signal
09:59was on its way to help them.
10:02Everyone was rescued safely,
10:04and the good news was
10:05that no lives were lost
10:07in this terrifying accident.
10:09But the captain's one mistake
10:11caused it all.
10:13The MV Explorer
10:14was swallowed up
10:15in the depths of the ocean,
10:17and the wreck is still buried
10:19about 25 miles away
10:20from Penguin Island.
10:22This is a chilling tale
10:24from Antarctica.
