00:00Today, I'm meeting up with someone who left her mark that night.
00:05Hi!
00:07Oh, my God, you look so stunning.
00:10A pioneer in the business who's paved her own way to the top,
00:15WWE superstar Charlotte Flair.
00:19I am the backbone of this division, the franchise player, and I am a winner!
00:28Charlotte Flair was built for the spotlight, built for the grand stage.
00:33Charlotte Flair is one of WWE's biggest stars.
00:38A multiple-time world champion.
00:41Her charisma and natural athleticism has made her a force to be reckoned with in the industry.
00:47I'm not apologizing for being that damn good!
00:51She is quite simply the queen of WWE.
00:55There can only be one queen!
01:01And here we are.
01:04The site of the event that propelled you to the main event at WrestleMania.
01:10Nassau Coliseum.
01:12I'm Stephanie McMahon and I love WWE.
01:21Stephanie McMahon!
01:25I'm on a quest to hear the stories behind the biggest superstars and legends in WWE history.
01:31Here we go.
01:33So come join me on the trip of a lifetime.
01:43October 28th, 2018.
01:46The day the women of WWE past and present made history right here at Nassau Coliseum.
01:54It was the first ever all-women's pay-per-view evolution.
02:00But women's wrestling wasn't always what we see today.
02:03For the majority of the 90s and 2000s, when women appeared on WWE TV, they were mostly valued for their looks rather than their athleticism.
02:14Come on, baby, baby!
02:16Charlotte Flair was part of a group of women that changed that narrative.
02:21I feel like when I arrive at the arenas and I see them being set up is when I'm the most nervous because it's like, oh, the calm before the storm.
02:31The storm that night was a grueling 30-minute last woman standing match against Becky Lynch for the SmackDown Women's Championship.
02:43Are you kidding me?
02:46Is there like a moment in the match that stands out to you the most?
02:51So she literally tried to bury me with chairs.
02:56Beside the commentary table over there.
02:58So she's just throwing chairs and chairs and chairs.
03:01And the moment was like she's sitting on the ring and she's like, count her out, count her out.
03:05And then you see me like come to live like a demon through the chairs.
03:10Oh, my God.
03:11She's up.
03:12Charlotte is up.
03:13Charlotte has risen.
03:15It's just one of those perfect matches.
03:19Oh.
03:20No, it wasn't.
03:21I mean, there are things that could be better, but it just felt emotionally perfect.
03:24Charlotte Flair is in trouble.
03:27Come on!
03:29Through the table!
03:31The audience, I'm pretty sure, was on their feet from start to finish that night.
03:34And you could feel that.
03:36You did see dads with little girls out there.
03:38You did see older, younger.
03:40I love little girls.
03:42Like, my daddy loved your daddy and I love you.
03:45Like, that little connection is so...
03:47It matters.
03:48And now I see little girls that don't even know who my...
03:52I'm like, you're just Charlotte.
03:54Her dad?
03:55You may have heard of him.
03:57Be the man!
03:58You gotta beat the man!
04:00Whoo!
04:01The legendary WWE Hall of Famer, the Nature Boy, Ric Flair.
04:08There is no one in this entire industry that is more respected than Ric Flair.
04:15The Flair name remains one of the most recognized in our business.
04:19And it's no longer Ric at the helm.
04:22How did Charlotte step out of her father's shadow and become WWE royalty?
04:28I wanted to sit down with her and talk about her journey.
04:32And how she helped change the perception of female athletes around the world.
04:37You've risen to this place that I don't know any other woman has risen to in our business.
04:43And you helped pave the way.
04:46How did you get your start for your career personally in WWE?
04:52Really, the honest answer is I was just lost in life.
04:57I had gone to the Hall of Fame 2012 for the Four Horsemen.
05:00And I was sitting at dinner with my dad and my little brother, Reed.
05:03And one of the producers looked at me and said,
05:06Well, why aren't you doing this?
05:08And I was kind of like, huh?
05:11Like, I always looked at the women, you know, believed in them, respected them.
05:15But I never saw myself as a diva, a WWE superstar, as the glam, the show person.
05:22The athletic part, yes.
05:24And Reed looked at me and was like, you can do this.
05:28Do it with me. We can do this together.
05:31His dream was to be just like my dad.
05:34My dad was cool.
05:36But like, I didn't want to like be him.
05:39I was his fan and like, oh, I'm gonna take my friends to the show and like, oh, look at cute boys.
05:45But like, it wasn't like, oh, I want to be that.
05:49In 2012, Charlotte joined NXT, then WWE's developmental system, and hoped for her brother to one day join her.
05:59But one year later, Reed tragically passed away at the age of 25.
06:05From that point forward, Charlotte was determined to carry out her brother's dream, a dream that became her own.
06:14You're watching your dad, you saw the women, and you know, you didn't necessarily see yourself fitting in at that time.
06:22How did your perspective shift once you started actually at NXT?
06:28So I know the word destiny is really cliche and corny, but when Hunter had taken over, he had hired a female coach.
06:38And then he had hired other women who just weren't, and I'm not saying this is a bad thing.
06:45I'm just saying their background wasn't in modeling or acting or beauty queens.
06:51It was actually women who had started on the independent scene, which if you watch the show, it's smaller companies than WWE.
06:59And the main goal is to make it here.
07:01Like the minor leagues.
07:02Minor leagues.
07:03Yeah.
07:04Well, I am from a unique perspective and had the opportunity to, of course, watch everything shift because there was a recruiting strategy.
07:14You're right.
07:15Yeah.
07:16That changed from going to modeling agencies and finding, you know, tens, which at one point was the directive.
07:24Yep.
07:25Um, and, and not athletes.
07:27Perfect storm.
07:28So I was hired major chip on my shoulder being Rick's daughter.
07:33Like, no, like I really want this.
07:35I work really hard.
07:36And then the girls that I came up with because of their passion, I took little pieces from them and started to realize like this was the first time in my life that I felt like I belong.
07:48On July 17th, 2013, Charlotte Flair made her NXT television debut with her father Rick by her side.
07:58Look at that move.
08:01Putting unique spotlight on NXT's women's division.
08:06The round down to the queen.
08:08Charlotte's the NXT women's champion.
08:11NXT was growing and just, I never looked at myself as going, I can't do what a man can't.
08:17I wasn't raised that way.
08:19And that's what the women I came up with felt as well.
08:22So that inner belief that we could do things, if not as good, but better than the men, that's why I think I am here today.
08:30Because we never had that limiting self belief that we couldn't.
08:35The women Charlotte is referencing were Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, and Bailey, collectively known as the Four Horsewomen,
08:44who started the spark that forever changed the industry with the audience chanting.
08:50This is Wesley! This is Wesley!
08:55My God, Charlotte!
08:57I remember feeling it, you know?
09:00And I can't imagine myself feeling it, watching it, what it felt like to you actually doing it.
09:08Double DDT by Charlotte!
09:11I don't know, it was such a unit.
09:13And everyone wanted the same thing.
09:15And we all stood out individually.
09:18And yes, of course there was competition between each other.
09:22But we all had the same goal.
09:24And I think that's why it worked so well.
09:26For me, this is about like representing all these amazing ladies that I train with every single day.
09:31And they're like all my sisters.
09:33So it's more about just representing NXT because I know how hard everyone works at the Performance Center.
09:39Once we were given the opportunity at NXT, the fans took notice and then we just ran with it.
09:44So, boy, did the fans take notice.
09:46While all of these women's matches were happening on NXT and there was this groundswell and this movement,
09:52the same was not yet happening on the main roster.
09:56February 23rd, 2015.
09:59One of the most pivotal nights in the history of women's wrestling.
10:04So it was the Bellas and Paige and Emma.
10:07And they were in a tag match that lasted all of like four or five minutes, including entrances.
10:12And our audience started a hashtag, Give Divas a Chance.
10:19Because Divas at the time was how we branded our women's division.
10:23In an effort to give them a spotlight, but it had a very different meaning to your point.
10:28And our fans were specifically calling for longer matches, more character development, better storylines.
10:36And that hashtag trended worldwide for three days.
10:41And finally, we had to take notice.
10:45On July 13th, 2015, nearly two years to the day from Charlotte's NXT debut, I had the privilege of welcoming Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, and the Queen herself to the main roster of Monday Night Raw.
11:03While joining forces with Paige will be a woman who was bred for this business.
11:10Charlotte!
11:12One of the most dominant divas we've ever seen at NXT.
11:16The WWE Universe got what they demanded.
11:19Our divas were being given a chance.
11:22And they started to steal the show.
11:25There's the bridge into the figure eight!
11:27Charlotte wins the panel!
11:31The divas division was full of hardworking, talented women and was starting to build incredible momentum.
11:40But in order for women's wrestling to truly start a new era, there needed to be a bigger change.
11:46Going forward, starting this Sunday at WrestleMania, you will no longer be referred to as divas.
11:53You will simply be superstars.
11:56And at WrestleMania, we will also debut the symbol of that evolution.
12:02The WWE Women's Championship.
12:09With a complete rebrand, including a brand new championship and an undeniable groundswell of success.
12:17For the first time ever, WWE's women took center stage at WrestleMania 32 at AT&T Stadium.
12:25Before WrestleMania 32, me, Sasha and Becky were the centerpieces.
12:31I mean, there was Roman Reigns, there was Triple H, there was Shane McMahon.
12:34But we were the center.
12:36Like, the very center of AT&T Stadium.
12:39You are looking live at a record crowd of over 100,000 for WrestleMania!
12:48When we were given those big opportunities to get to WrestleMania 32, we were ready.
12:54Charlotte on the top rope! Moves on by Charlotte!
12:58It was a matter of, okay, give it to us.
13:00We know we can do it.
13:01Give it to us.
13:02Like, we know we can steal the show.
13:03John, this is incredible!
13:05This could be the greatest athlete we've ever had as a WWE Women's Champion!
13:11For me, I felt like this was my brother's dream.
13:16And we just stole the show at the Super Bowl of our company.
13:20What was there was the passion, the dreams, and knowing we were just as good as the men.
13:27And no one could tell us otherwise.
13:29From 32, that's when it was like, okay, you're main eventing Raw, you're main eventing SmackDown.
13:34For the first time ever, women will step foot inside hell in a cell.
13:40The first ever women's Money in the Bank ladder match.
13:45We were leading a movement.
13:48I think whether you realize it or not, when we look back in time, the Women's World Cup blew away the men's in soccer, ratings-wise.
13:56There were a number of different female athletes.
13:59Serena Williams, right?
14:00She was at the top of her game.
14:02And I want to give her credit, but Rhonda, like, the most famous woman in the world at that time.
14:10Rhonda was a huge game changer.
14:14Even after making history in MMA, the baddest woman on the planet, Rhonda Rousey, wanted to join the movement in WWE.
14:27What?
14:30Oh, my God!
14:32Rhonda Rousey is here!
14:35How important do you think it is for little girls specifically to see women in powerful roles, to know it's possible?
14:49So I'm not just saying this to get brownie points or anything like that.
14:54But when I was growing up, your figure on TV, for me personally, like, who I could relate to, and what I'd want to be like, and how you carried yourself, was you.
15:07A intelligent, boss, mm, it, like, would be you.
15:14But having that star figure, I think, is important for anyone in any industry, especially being a woman.
15:20You know, because I feel like women always do have to prove themselves a little more, even to this day.
15:26To have more women, like you said, that are giving, you know, these little girls hope, that does mean a lot.
15:35You look amazing, queen!
15:41Oh, my goodness!
15:43And again, it's like remembering that's what it's about.
15:46Mm-hmm.
15:47And never waver from that.
15:48And that's why I also think I've never wavered from what I believe, like, Charlotte truly stands for.
15:54What does Charlotte stand for?
15:56Strong, independent woman.
15:58Strong, independent woman.
16:10WWE's women were making history in every way except one.
16:11No woman had ever main-evented WrestleMania, the industry's biggest show of the year.
16:15On April 7, 2019 at MetLife Stadium, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, and Ronda Rousey broke that barrier.
16:24I thought we could talk about it at ringside but Charlotte had other ideas
16:29I know there's only one way you travel and since I wanted to be just like you oh
16:34I have my helicopter waiting your helicopter I am hmm for the show it's
16:44gonna take us to MetLife so we can reenact my entrance oh my god that's so cool
16:50a history-making moment like WrestleMania 35 needed a history-making walkout a throwback
16:58to her father's iconic arrival at the Great American Bash and an entrance befitting of a
17:04queen a private helicopter to MetLife Stadium I need music madame thank you sir we need music
17:16everybody needs a little entity right and now apparently it was my turn to experience the
17:29same royal treatment here we go on your way there like what was going through your mind in 2013
17:40there's an interview and I was like on the main event WrestleMania and I think everyone was just
17:44kind of like oh those are sound bites when I was in the helicopter I was like yep told you it was the
17:54first time in my life that I had said I was gonna do something and I did it you just never know what
18:02tomorrow is gonna be right place right time yeah special okay so what happened when you landed the red
18:12carpet they rolled out the red carpet we took off the leather jacket that I had made with pearls and they
18:18put my robe on me and then I just started walking like talk about like if you don't believe you're a badass
18:24you have to believe in this moment that you're a badass don't let the helicopter overshadow you
18:36at WrestleMania 35 Charlotte touched down and made her way to the ring to make history this time we went
18:45up to a luxury box with the bird's eye view to talk about that magical night you are looking live in a
18:53sold-out MetLife Stadium in the shadows of New York City so how does it feel to be back
18:58it was a little louder
19:02a few more people I've had the time to really look back and be like wow I did that but coming back here
19:12because I haven't been back here since WrestleMania 35 it's like
19:15oh we really did sell out this stadium and I think that's like hard to grasp
19:23for Charlotte Flair she has made history for years in WWE tonight she's headlining
19:31WrestleMania every single one of those seats was filled that night when Charlotte Flair Becky Lynch and
19:39Ronda Rousey main evented Wrestlemania Charlotte didn't emerge victorious in the ring but that
20:05moment transcended wrestling not only did WWE's women's division evolve Charlotte Flair evolved herself
20:16so I have to ask you I noticed on your arm and as your screensaver you have a butterfly
20:22what now you're gonna make no I got through the symbolism oh no the butterfly Stephanie
20:33change growth metamorphosis as cliche and corny but like wanting to always evolve and butterflies do
20:47why does it make you so emotional um because I feel like I've lived so many lives like I'm not the
20:56person I was here you know and I'm grateful for all the I actually it's just like how did I get here
21:01I know like the stigma of Charlotte Flair and the character is so larger than life and of course she'd have a
21:09helicopter of course she'd be in a fur coat but like I fought really hard to get here right I've heard
21:14like a girl literally say at 31 oh my god I'm so I I'm so old what am I gonna do I'm like girl I didn't
21:22even I didn't even start till 29 and then get into my business at 30 like you don't have to have it all
21:27figured out and I don't and I still don't know what the future holds I believed at Wrestlemania 35
21:34that I was the main event that Rhonda was the main event that Becky was the main event but I still
21:41didn't have life figured out and God only knows what else is to come but I'm more good more good
21:50more good more good but um since you made me tear I got through the whole day without tears sorry I oh I
21:59didn't mean it um but you do so much for us as talent and for the girls backstage and the staff
22:08and everyone but really for women as a whole and you've always been the queen of WWE yes I I get to
22:17call myself the queen but you have a king you've always been the queen so the queen of queens I got you
22:25a little something no way no way this is so cool yes the queen of us queens this is the front oh yep
22:45okay you put it on me it's kind of wait no I lied oh you'll figure it out oh look at that good
22:57does it look like it belongs yes well she always wears her invisible crown but I wanted her to have
23:05something shiny thank you very much oh I love it being crowned by the queen of WWE was an honor
23:15as a mother of three daughters I loved taking a trip down memory lane on a movement that is so
23:22close to my heart and one that wouldn't have been possible without Charlotte Flair
23:27I have upgraded since Wrestlemania 35 you were saying this helicopter is very different
23:41yeah well you know the marble did not marble marble did you decorate I decorated I gray leather teeth
23:53wood ah that's what this is thinking of anchorman right now I love lamb leather bound books
