00:10A whole host of posts on X are alleging

00:12that the Vatican authorities prevented African citizens

00:15from approaching Pope Francisza's body

00:17to pay their respects as he lay in state.

00:20The posts share a video of a black man

00:22in St. Peter's Basilica

00:23arguing with someone else offscreen.

00:26He's then escorted away by security

00:28while other visitors to the Vatican look on.

00:30The video is accompanied with captions

00:32saying that Africans were blocked

00:34from bidding farewell to Pope Francis

00:36with some claiming that it amounts to racism.

00:39However, this isn't true.

00:41St. Peter's Basilica was open to all

00:43with tens of thousands queuing to see his open coffin

00:46including Africans.

00:48People were able to see the late Pope lying in state

00:50between the 23rd and 25th of April

00:52according to news reports at the time.

00:54A reverse image search of a still from the video

00:57shows us that it was put online as late as the 22nd of April

01:01a day before the lying in state began

01:03and the day after Pope Francis's death.

01:05This is despite even certain news outlets

01:08claiming that the event shown in the video

01:10occurred while the Pope's body was on display to the public.

01:13The reverse image search also takes us

01:15to local Italian news reports

01:17which were also published on the 22nd of April.

01:19These say that the man appeared to bypass security checks

01:22and the large queue of the faithful

01:24who had been lining up to bid a figurative farewell

01:26to the Bishop of Rome before the lying in state began.

01:30Community notes on certain expos

01:32also say that the man is known to people living in the area

01:35and that he often causes a disturbance

01:37but is ultimately harmless.

01:39There are no credible sources suggesting

01:41that anyone was denied access to see his body

01:44on the grounds of their country of origin

01:46or the colour of their skin

01:47including a lack of any such announcement

01:49from the Vatican itself.
