00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Well, good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio, Rachel.
00:35How often I'm out in the car and I get a call.
00:38Can you just pop in and pick up a bottle of milk at the supermarket?
00:43I say, all right.
00:44So I do that and then you get to the checkout and there's a queue a mile long.
00:49People have got stacks of stuff and you say, oh, no, I'm now going to have to wait forever.
00:55Forever.
00:55Some supermarkets have got the self-checkouts, which is fine, but many don't.
01:00But great news is on the way.
01:03Great news is on the way for the impatient because supermarkets are trialing completely till-free stores.
01:09And the deal is that you get something, an app on your phone and you scan everything you buy on your app.
01:16And then you present your phone at some sort of machine at the checkout.
01:20And that then triggers a transaction from your bank account to the supermarket account and off you go.
01:28Isn't that brilliant?
01:29Wouldn't have to talk to anybody.
01:31No, well, you've got sometimes you would think, wouldn't it be nice if somebody would say, oh, have you only got a bottle of milk?
01:36Why didn't you come in front of my three tons of groceries?
01:39Well, they never do anywhere.
01:41Yeah, they do.
01:41I still do that.
01:42You do that?
01:43Yeah.
01:44But also, you're trying to scan a bottle of brandy.
01:47Mm-hmm.
01:47And suddenly, an assistant arrives to just check that you're overage.
01:53Yeah, and all the other dodgy things that you buy in the supermarket, Nick.
01:57You'll be able to just pop them in your bag and go on your way.
02:00Oh, poor thought.
02:02Oh, right.
02:03I may have missed something there.
02:05I'll come back to you on that.
02:07I'll come back to you on that.
02:08Anyway, technology, you love that sort of thing.
02:11And I buy absolutely into it if it saves time.
02:13Now, Rachel, he's back.
02:16The child wonder here.
02:17Andrew Jackson, math student at Kiel.
02:20116 yesterday.
02:21Well done.
02:22The previous, 103.
02:24So you're doing very well.
02:25You're doing very well.
02:26But never get comfortable, Andrew, because somebody will sneak up and take it all away.
02:30Will that be Abby Watley, I wonder?
02:33Welcome, Abby.
02:34Maths teacher from Romsey in Hampshire, teaches in Winchester, and a good tennis player.
02:39Plays, in fact, for the Hampshire Apsley's top league, yeah?

02:43Except we've now got a baby, little Amelia.
02:45Yeah, 10-month-old.
02:47Oh, sweet.
02:47And she's watching Mummy.
02:49Well, she wants to do a stadium tour of Old Trafford, so my husband's taken her very kindly.
02:54Oh, is that right?
02:55Well done.
02:56There's a fan over there for you.
02:59Well done.
02:59Amelia.

06:28In the corner, Susie and Jenny.

06:38Well done.

14:08We're going to talk hobbies today, Nick.
14:10Yes.
14:10I've decided I've reached the hobby time of life.
14:14And I've got roses in my garden.
14:16I've never had roses before.
14:18I had an epiphany in a garden centre in Shropshire,
14:21and I bought myself several pots of roses.
14:23I sing to my roses.
14:25I say, hello, my lovely ladies,
14:26my lovely, lovely lady, every morning.
14:29And they bloom and they grow over the summer, this was.
14:32And then you remember when it was very hot over the summer.
14:34Do you remember then?
14:35The hot summer, 2018, we had the drought.
14:38Even in London, there was, you know, threat of a hosepipe ban.
14:41My daughter, who's a bit like that, said,
14:43I had to decant my bath water into watering cans to water my roses.
14:49I dutifully did this.
14:50And the next morning, when I went out to sing,
14:52hello, my lovely ladies, they were all like this.
14:54Ooh, ooh.
14:55Their faces were all, ooh, ooh.
14:57Turned away.
14:59Yeah.
14:59That was funny.

15:01Oh, really?
15:02With my bath water.
15:03So you, you had a bucket or something in the bathroom,
15:07and you were sort of scooping.
15:08Decanting.
15:09Decanting.
15:10I even do it.
15:11I said to my daughter, if you're that fussed, you have to do it.
15:14She had to decant my scuzzy bath water.
15:16But we don't have any flowers at all in the garden.
15:18Oh, no.
15:19My partner's flower-free, but I quite like, I'm allowed white roses.
15:23He won't have colour.
15:24No colour.
15:25It's a difficult man.
15:27You're the colour in his life.
15:28I am.
15:29I'm more than enough colour in his life.

19:57No, I didn't guess it.
19:58Let's stick with Andrew for the moment.
20:00Yes, Andrew?
20:01So I did 100 minus 5.
20:02100 minus 5, 95.
20:04Times by the 7 plus 3.
20:067 plus 3 for 10.
20:07Times them together, 9, 50.
20:09And then just add the 4 and 1.
20:10Yep, and that gets you to 2 away.
20:129, 5, 5.
20:14Very good.
20:15But, Rachel, can you crack it for us?
20:179, 5, 7?
20:18I can, Nick.
20:19If you say 5 plus 4 is 9.
20:237 minus 1 is 6.
20:24Plus 100 for 106.
20:27Times those together for 954.
20:30And add on the 3 for 9, 5, 7.
20:32Perfect.

20:53Welcome back.
21:08I left you with the clue, her hair doesn't look as long as it usually is.
21:13That's because it's been shortened, is the answer.

24:42Two good ones.
24:43And Jenny?
24:44Jenny is in.
24:45Same as Andrew.
24:46Blunter.
24:47Yep.
24:47Bungler for me too, so we matched.
24:49There we are.
24:50Yep.
24:50Close that down.
24:51From 72 to 26.
24:53Susie, it's your origins of words.
24:55Now, what have you got for us today?
24:57I have an email from Barbara Robbins.
25:00Thanks to Barbara for emailing in.
25:02She's from Stafford and she asks, why do we say good, better, best and not good, gooder,
25:07goodest?
25:09And so this is all about the comparative and the superlative.
25:11And there was a poll quite recently that discovered from its representative sample that 70% of us
25:18can't find or can't spot a comparative or a superlative in a sentence.
25:24I think that's just because of the grammatical terminology, to be honest, because I'm not sure many of us talk about comparatives and superlatives apart from on countdown.
25:31But anyway, that's what it's all about.
25:33And it's one of the many examples in which English is not straightforward.
25:39So gooder and goodest would make perfect sense as words.
25:43But as always, so many influences on English.
25:46And this is a perfect example of that.
25:48So we have to go back to the Germanic invaders we often do.
25:51And the ancient root of good was a word that also gave us gather and together because it's actually meant to bring people together.
25:59So it's a sort of unity, if you like.
26:01And because unity is a very positive thing, good came to mean pleasing and favourable, which is, of course, where it stands today.
26:08But the word had no regular comparative or superlative.
26:12Comparative meaning more, superlative meaning most, really, if you like.
26:16And it seems to have followed Latin in this.
26:19And we're not completely sure why, because Latin had three separate words as well.
26:22It had bonus meaning good, melhor meaning better, and optimus meaning best.
26:27And, of course, you can see how that thread runs through English to this day.
26:30And so the Anglo-Saxons borrowed another set of Germanic words, betterer and betest, which again goes back to a root meaning advantage.
26:39And that was B-A-T, advantage.
26:40That's given us to boot, the expression to boot.
26:43That's the only thing it survives in.
26:45To boot meaning sort of added on as an extra, as an advantage, if you like.
26:49So all of which means we might say we've been talking about boot, better, best.
26:54But we didn't.
26:55So what we did was we stuck with good and then added those two other influences on, if you like.
27:01As for bad, worse, and worst, the forms badder and baddest were actually alive and well in old English times.
27:07But they were gradually replaced in standard English by worst and worst.
27:11Again, a different influence.
27:12It goes back to a German root again, which is actually linked to war.
27:17And worst is a sausage because it's all about a sort of confusion or a jumble, just as a sausage is a worst, is a confusion of ingredients, if you like.
27:26So really, really tricky story.
27:28And so often with English history, you have to kind of wind your way through this thorny route.
27:32But hopefully we'll get there in the end.
27:33Well, it's done.
27:40Tricky country, isn't it?
27:41Yeah, it's a very tricky language.
27:43And, yeah, sorry if that was a bit complicated.
27:45Not at all.
27:46You unravelled it beautifully.
