Interior Design Masters with Alan Carr 2025 episode 4
Transcript
00:00This week we're at the incredible Battersea Dogs and Cat Zone,
00:04where our designers are creating special spaces for these beautiful animals.
00:09Who's a good boy? Yes, you are.
00:11And apparently there's a dog here that reminds the staff so much of me,
00:15they've named him Alan.
00:17I'm guessing he's a super-friendly retriever or glamorous poodle.
00:22Here he is. Alan, meet Alan.
00:25Oh, he's lovely, but he doesn't even look like me.
00:30Fair enough.
00:32Welcome to Interior Design Masters.
00:35Oh, little Alan needs a mint.
00:39Last time...
00:40Piers, I've got an idea.
00:42..the designers did up apartments for the over-60s.
00:45Is this Lola? Yeah.
00:47How's she lost an eye? I think she was drunk.
00:50Craig and Bryony's imaginary clients...
00:53That's Julia and David's. Oh, and so who's that?
00:56That's their friends.
00:58..won them standout space.
01:00Thank you, Michelle.
01:01John's rooms were too pared back.
01:03The words are nice and inoffensive, and that's not good enough.
01:07..landing him on the sofa.
01:09I had actually started doing some after that room.
01:12I ran out of time.
01:13But it was Holly and Aisha's mythical clients.
01:16We got a retired mermaid and a retired sailor that fell in love.
01:19Is there gas coming out of here?
01:21That landed them in hot water.
01:24I'm so sorry, but you two will be leaving us this week.
01:28That's been really good feedback, definitely.
01:40Week four, new challenge.
01:42I know.
01:43What a challenge.
01:44First standout space, coming into this week on a high,
01:47it gave me a little confidence boost that leaning into me
01:50and doing my style and adding in all those Bryonyisms
01:53is, like, a good thing to do.
01:55Dog rooms.
01:56They're certainly pushing us, aren't they?
01:58Yeah, they are.
01:59I don't know what to expect, really, now.
02:01So, last week, I had a brilliant time working with Bryony
02:04and, of course, we won standout space.
02:06That puts a lot of pressure to perform this week
02:09and the standard is high, so I've got to keep going hard.
02:12I just think it's such a challenge.
02:14It's such a challenge.
02:15The client is a dog.
02:17I know.
02:18I never thought I'd be designing a room for dogs.
02:21Never.
02:22I've never had a dog before.
02:23All I've got now is fish.
02:25Turn up a clue.
02:27How you doing, guys?
02:29Hello.
02:32I brought a little pal.
02:34I thought he might be more useful than me.
02:38Now, when I heard about this challenge, I was so excited.
02:41I ran around the room three times,
02:43then rolled on my back wanting a tummy tickle.
02:46Yes, you're heading to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home
02:50to transform some special spaces for their four-legged guests.
02:55Oh, will you take me home?
02:58Battersea re-homes around 6,000 animals every year.
03:03To help the dogs adjust and learn the skills they need
03:06to thrive in their forever homes,
03:08they are brought into transitional rooms for training.
03:11Each designer will be assigned one of these spaces
03:14to transform into a home away from home.
03:17Oh, will you take me home?
03:20So, Michelle, what do the designers have to do
03:23to get your tail wagging?
03:26Well, clearly, you must have a Basset in every room.
03:29Beyond that, this challenge is about creating a pet-friendly design
03:33to get Battersea's rescue dogs used to a home environment.
03:37So, I want you to think relaxing but also stimulating,
03:41durable and functional.
03:43And for this Dogtastic Challenge,
03:45we needed a guest judge who was playful and fun.
03:49So, joining Michelle is comedian and Battersea ambassador,
03:53the super-perky Sue Perkins.
03:58We love a bit of Sue, don't we?
03:59Love Sue.
04:00You've got two days and a budget of £1,100 each
04:04to create a room that will make these Battersea pooches
04:08feel like top dogs.
04:10See you.
04:11Good luck.
04:12But I would walk 500 miles
04:15and I would walk 500 more.
04:19The designers have arrived at Battersea for a client meeting
04:22to get the lowdown on what's needed.
04:25Here we are, London!
04:26Yay!
04:27I'm excited to meet some dogs.
04:29I know.
04:30We should just get in the cages with them.
04:32But since none of them speak dog,
04:34they'll have to make do with a Battersea insider instead.
04:37Hi, guys, welcome to Battersea.
04:39It's lovely to have you.
04:40Just joining me, we've got Fox and Dana.
04:43These are two of over 120 dogs that we've got with us
04:46at the London site at the moment.
04:48So, a lot of dogs that will obviously be utilising the rooms
04:51that you guys are going to create for us.
04:53So, what do you do in these transition rooms primarily?
04:56So, it's anything from training, relaxing, teaching them to settle,
05:02or potentially even introducing to new customers as well.
05:06Some of our dogs obviously come from, you know, backgrounds
05:09where we maybe don't know what they've been through.
05:11So, we might just have to get them used to being in that home environment again.
05:15So, I'm wondering how much do you want this to look like an actual home environment?
05:19We'd be happy with sort of interpretations as well as sort of, you know, full-on,
05:24this could be in someone's home.
05:26So, if we could have different areas that do different things,
05:29then obviously that means that we can do more.
05:31Making sure that our indoor spaces are as enriching as possible is important to us as well.
05:37Are there any big no-no's to put in this room?
05:40Probably anything that is very easy to pull apart.
05:43The softer it is for some of the dogs, they might really gravitate towards wanting to play with that
05:47and pull that off.
05:48It's trying to see the room from their eyes, not ours.
05:52It was great meeting Becky and her kind of words of wisdom on the space
05:56to hear how important they can be for new dogs.
05:59It kind of run the fear through me, but also it's a really special place.
06:03So, it's kind of a small room with big ambition.
06:06It was super helpful realising all the different things that the space is going to be used for.
06:12But also what became really apparent is just how robust the space needs to be.
06:18These dogs are going to hammer it.
06:20There's going to be everything from tiny little dogs to huge dogs in that space.
06:24So, it needs to be able to cope with them all.
06:31Well, this is jolly.
06:33The designers have their work cut out if they're to impress both dogs and trainers.
06:39And all in their tiniest space yet, just 15 square metres.
06:44It's going to be cosy in here.
06:46And each room has a large column in the middle.
06:49I'm just thinking about where different things are going to go and if they're going to fit.
06:53Oh, a few chew marks on the corners. Wow.
06:57But fortunately, they've got a carpenter and decorator each to help bring their homely living spaces to life.
07:04Morning.
07:05Hey, morning guys.
07:06Morning.
07:07How are you doing?
07:08Very well, yeah?
07:09Are you ready for a pop heart extravaganza?
07:13We're ready.
07:14So, my plan is to turn this one room into like a little mini house.
07:17So, we're going to have a front room area, kitchen area, but there'll also be a front garden.
07:22About 13 years ago, I actually adopted a dog from Batsy Dogs and Cats Home.
07:27Her name was Purdy and this is her.
07:30I lost her a couple of years ago and so I decided to dedicate this room to Purdy.
07:35So, she'll be here in the room watching over us.
07:39Craig's pop art home will be packed full of clever details, including a front door that will act as a room divider and a training tool to get the dogs used to doorbells and posters.
07:50He's adding hand-drawn details and bright colours to his furniture and walls to achieve a cheery cartoon look.
07:59Oh, this is looking poppy, isn't it?
08:01It's bright.
08:02Wow, you can't miss this room.
08:07One of the key points was all about it being durable.
08:10So, that got me thinking about plastic and that kind of led me on to pop art.
08:15It's what I like and it was a challenge.
08:18How am I going to inject the Craig flavour into a dog training room?
08:22But pop art seemed to be the perfect marriage.
08:27Morning!
08:28And it's not just Craig sticking close to their signature style.
08:31I divided the space into two halves.
08:34So, this half is the dining nook in a cottage in the countryside.
08:38So, then the dogs will be trained around a proper table and chairs.
08:41And the other side is a little, like, backyard.
08:46And I will be doing a mural.
08:48So, the space is for them to relax and play on the other side.
08:51And I would like to have a little stood wall here.
08:54Mm-hm.
08:55And then part of it, the bottom part, the dogs can still run around.
08:58But that part will have a blackboard.
09:01Yeah.
09:02Just to write things on it.
09:03Do you put on your inspiration board there as dogs can see blue and yellow?
09:07Yeah.
09:08So, this is what dogs can see.
09:09Oh, wow.
09:10I'm excited.
09:11I hope you're excited.
09:12Yeah.
09:13You just got me as a chihuahua for the next day.
09:14Okay.
09:15I'll just be like...
09:17So, I am going back to my signature style in a way.
09:21So, I'm using some rustic element, like the dining table, the chairs, a blackboard.
09:26But I'm using colors.
09:28And a big challenge for me to work with colors, because I never really work with bright colors.
09:32So, it's a bit of a balance, this one.
09:35You know, this yellow isn't bad.
09:39That's the start of the mural.
09:41I'm hoping it will give a feeling of relaxed and joyful in the same time.
09:46This is quite a settled color.
09:48Maybe I'll surprise everyone.
09:50I'll be the queen of colors soon.
09:52Like the top of a pineapple.
09:55Bradley's also breathing life into his walls with a mural.
10:00This is a good way of achieving that whole illusion of wild grass in a garden.
10:07But his inspiration is from a completely different habitat.
10:11What's the fish?
10:12I don't have a dog.
10:13I don't have a cat.
10:14So, I've got a fish.
10:15Still a black.
10:16She's got a little ginger wig.
10:17Is that real?
10:18Yeah.
10:19Never owned a dog.
10:20So, I thought I need as much help as I need.
10:21So, you know, I rang dog psychologists.
10:22I rang kennels.
10:23I went to pet stores and that.
10:24And so, from that, I did want to bring in the garden scheme into the room.
10:40Because I think dog stuff and outside space.
10:43Still be saying good job, Daisy.
10:45Good job.
10:46The blue's looking good.
10:47Where's my pond?
10:48I do not feel confidence whatsoever.
10:51Bradley's boldly decided to turn his transition room into a garden.
10:58As well as his leafy mural, he's got metal outdoor furniture, a bespoke ottoman for toy storage, and his crate is hidden under a planter.
11:07To help give the feeling of the outdoors, he's disguising the central column as a tree.
11:14Hey, Bradley, come look at the tree.
11:15Yeah, let's see.
11:16That's going to sit on there.
11:19Yeah.
11:20Amazing.
11:21Is that what you're thinking?
11:22That sort of thing?
11:23That's perfect.
11:24Yeah.
11:25Is it everything you wanted?
11:26It's even more.
11:31As soon as you walk into the room, all you see is a column, and I do think it's a bit of an eyesore.
11:36So, turning that into a tree, it's a centre point, and it's a bit more attractive than a plain column.
11:42If it's a leg, I do.
11:44That's the one, isn't it?
11:45It's an egg test, isn't it?
11:46We don't want that, though, do we?
11:49Ooh.
11:50Isn't they cute?
11:51They are cute.
11:52Brian is also hoping to disguise the central pillar.
11:56And you drew them?
11:57Yeah.
11:58That's really cool.
11:59With a personal touch that she hopes will make her room stand out from the pack.
12:03It is little faces of my dogs over the years, and I've also got Michelle's dog and Sue's dog, Alan's dog makes a feature.
12:11So, that's going to be my wallpaper on the giant pillar in the middle of the room to just try and make a thing of it.
12:18How do you feel cutting their heads off, Stephen?
12:19I know, I'm amputating her ears.
12:21I feel very mean.
12:26This is going to be a lovely, like, outside dining experience.
12:30So, this side is very much going to be more the garden.
12:34We've got three large cable drums coming in.
12:37They're going to be, like, more of the play zone for the dogs.
12:39They're going to have some planters secured to them.
12:42So, they're a really good hefty bit of furniture that dogs can play on.
12:46I feel like if you can't bring a bit of fun to dog week, then when can you bring fun?
12:51That looks really smart.
12:55Whilst Bryony is going for caricatures...
12:58Oh, it's bright, isn't it?
13:00Victoria is going corporate.
13:03In terms of colour, I'm just going with Battersea Blue.
13:06So, that kind of keeps it all in line with their branding.
13:09So, I'm creating a kind of living space, home environment.
13:13What I'm going to do is a kind of photo opportunity wall here.
13:16It is multifunctional because it is a sofa.
13:18And that's where the dogs will pose, sit and have a wee picture taken there
13:22to be popped on the website for adoption to find our forever home.
13:27My design is more practical than luxury.
13:31We have been asked to design a room for a dog.
13:35It doesn't need to look outstandingly luxurious.
13:38It needs to be practical.
13:40While most designers are busy creating home and garden spaces,
13:47dogs would recognise...
13:49Oh, I hope Michelle doesn't have a bone to pick with me for these.
13:54Craig's furniture is in a world of its own.
13:57I've got this nice cleanable melamine furniture, very basic.
14:01And onto this, I'm going to put all of the edges in black
14:05to make it look like a cartoon drawing.
14:07Of course, the problem is, it's a permanent marker equals permanent.
14:11So, I've got to have a little bit of a steady hand.
14:14It's very pop art, which is from the 50s,
14:17but it's also quite reminiscent of Keith Haring,
14:20who was in the 80s, who did lots of amazing graffiti.
14:23I mean, it turns a boring non-event of a chair into a piece of art.
14:28I could pop that in a gallery, no problem.
14:30And whilst Craig is busy creating cartoon furniture,
14:34John is going for something more realistic.
14:37This is my dresser.
14:38I'm going to take it back to Bearwood, paint it,
14:41hopefully make it wipeable and easy to clean.
14:44I'm going to put some wheels on it as well,
14:46so that we're able to move it around in the room.
14:48It's to help portray that dining room environment in a home,
14:51but also we're using this for storage.
14:54My design inspiration comes from my own experience with growing up with dogs.
14:58So, when I was a kid, we had a little dog and it used to nip your toes at the dining table.
15:03So, yeah, I wanted to hopefully create a place where dogs can be trained
15:07to fit in with a family in a dining space.
15:10We've got a big round dining table.
15:12I've opted for plastic and metal see-through seats.
15:15So, it's a really limited space in there.
15:17And actually, by having see-through chairs,
15:19we're giving that kind of visual cue that the space isn't quite as full as it actually is.
15:24So, I've picked up these modular sofas.
15:27It can be easily wiped down.
15:29I'm going to change the brown to the Battersea Blue.
15:32So, it's a specific paint that sticks to the likes of your PVC windows,
15:37so it should be nice and durable.
15:39It's a really, really low height as well, so that will cater for all dogs.
15:42So, I'm thinking Maui Daphne would be able to jump on that no bother at all
15:46and obviously bigger dogs would manage.
15:48My mum and sister used to run a board and kennels business from the family farm.
15:53So, I spent mainly a summer walking dogs, cleaning up after dogs.
15:57I would like to think that that experience helped me for this challenge.
16:08I love my dog as much as I love you.
16:12Oh, Alan, I'm so glad we've met.
16:15What with our shared love of biscuits and afternoon naps.
16:18You're like a brother from another mother.
16:20Come on, let's see the designers.
16:25Hello, doggies. Hello, doggies.
16:27Let's hope they've got some good ideas.
16:29Hello, kitty, boy. Hello, kitty.
16:33Oh, no.
16:34This is a right dog's dinner.
16:37Go on, Alan, fill your boots.
16:41I'll check on the designers.
16:43Bradley.
16:46Oh, hello.
16:47Oh, Bradley.
16:48There he is.
16:49Love the tree.
16:51Is there ever going to be leaves on it?
16:53Well, you can put one up if you want.
16:55Make it summer.
16:56Here?
16:57Around here?
16:58Anywhere where you want, go on.
17:00Is that good?
17:01Yeah.
17:02Smash there.
17:03So you've got a tree.
17:04What else have you got in here?
17:05We've got the whole seating area, so the bench over here.
17:08Have you got a bistro set?
17:09A bistro set?
17:10Yeah.
17:11For a dog.
17:12You clearly haven't had a dog before, have you?
17:14A bistro set.
17:15So are you doing any other rooms?
17:17Because these are transitional homes for dogs.
17:18Yeah.
17:19So this is giving them a little taste of what their house might be like.
17:22The dog might be like, oh, so I'm never going to go indoors?
17:27I know what you're saying.
17:28It is a garden space, but you know, outside seating, outside living.
17:32All right then, love.
17:33See you.
17:34Bradley's chosen not to do an inside living space and has just made a garden with a great big tree.
17:38It's a garden space, but you know, outside seating, outside living.
17:40All right then, love.
17:41See you.
17:42Bradley's chosen not to do an inside living space and has just made a garden with a great big tree.
17:46It's all very sweet and lovely, but could it be a bit too convincing?
17:51An excitable dog and a tree.
17:53What's the worst that could happen?
18:03Gosh, that's lovely.
18:08It's not done.
18:09Just needs door handles on it now.
18:12This is my dining table.
18:14And I didn't like the colour because I thought I like mermaids, but I don't like a mermaid blue for the legs.
18:21And it's just going to be for those lovely dogs.
18:24We have to train them not to sit on the table because this is for food or work.
18:29But awkward shapes like this, it's taking me forever.
18:34Creating the perfect furniture is no easy feat, especially for Victoria, who's busy making a giant dog paw.
18:41So is it going on the wall, yeah?
18:42Yeah, so it's a photo opportunity wall that I'm hoping to create and then we've got these to sit above them as well.
18:49That's lovely.
18:50It's quite a high-pressure environment to learn how to upholster.
18:53You've done a good job there.
18:54Don't look too closely.
18:56What about you?
18:57What's this?
18:58Yeah, so this is...
18:59It was a tyre.
19:00Okay.
19:01Now it's an ottoman.
19:02So we've covered it in roof.
19:03Nice.
19:04And inside there's going to be storage.
19:05Lovely.
19:06Very nice.
19:07And it's a seat house as well.
19:08Good.
19:09Yeah, sturdy.
19:10Oh, yeah, there's no breaking that, is there?
19:12No.
19:13Nice.
19:15Come on.
19:16See you soon.
19:17I've got your spool in the back of the van.
19:19Yes.
19:20It's not just Bradley who's turning trash into treasure.
19:23We've got my cable drum.
19:25It's made its way up here in the van, but now we've got to get it up the stairs and actually
19:28into the room.
19:29So we're going in optimistically.
19:31I hear you wanted some muscle parts.
19:34Yeah.
19:35But they weren't available.
19:36Yes.
19:37I'll do.
19:38I've got three wooden cable drums and we're going to top them with some astro
19:43and then there's going to be a dog bed on there and like a big canopy going over it.
19:47So it's like a secluded bed moment for the dogs.
19:50Oh.
19:51And back a bit.
19:53Oh.
19:54Ready?
19:55Bit more.
19:56Yeah, bit more.
19:57Yeah.
19:58It's fitting the door.
19:59It's a good start, isn't it?
20:03Good.
20:04Yeah.
20:05Thank you very much.
20:06I mean, he is big in the room, but he was supposed to be.
20:09It was supposed to be a really big feature of the room.
20:12It's going to work.
20:14Riley!
20:15Hi, Alan.
20:16How you doing?
20:17All right, thanks.
20:18Can we talk about this colour?
20:20You love it, don't you?
20:24Is it a bit baby pooey?
20:26No, Alan.
20:27It's earthy.
20:29Oh, OK.
20:30So who are these dogs?
20:31Well, I've had six dogs over the years, so some of these are my dogs.
20:35Oh, OK.
20:36And look who we've got here.
20:37Is this your Bev?
20:38Yeah!
20:39A little Irish set of Bev.
20:41We've got Bev.
20:42We've got Michelle's dog on here.
20:44Oh, yeah, Henry.
20:45We've got Sue's dog.
20:46Yay!
20:47You are putting our dogs up there to melt our hearts.
20:51You want to be stand-up space again.
20:53These things have to be done.
20:54We're halfway through now.
20:55This is serious stuff.
20:56How is Bev?
20:57Still dead.
20:58So this is...
21:00But it's nice to have her, right?
21:02Yeah, it's nice to see her there, yeah.
21:04Yeah, because she's there multiple times.
21:05Yeah, I know, yeah, she's there.
21:07Yeah, me dead dog's there a few times.
21:09Listen, all my dogs are there.
21:11They're dead.
21:12This is quite a grim column, isn't it?
21:15It's a grim...
21:16It's not actually a column, it's a gravestone.
21:18Yeah.
21:19Yeah, all right.
21:20No, try and be positive, OK?
21:23We shall.
21:24Yeah, we're going to do this.
21:25Between my baby poo walls and the shrine.
21:27I'm going to just leave now.
21:29Thanks, Alan.
21:30You're doing great, just ignore me.
21:34Over at Craig's...
21:37Come in.
21:38Hello.
21:39The door's going into his pop art room.
21:41This is looking smashing.
21:42Just having this little break just changes the whole vibe, doesn't it?
21:46Yeah, definitely.
21:47Zones it off nicely.
21:48Yeah, it does.
21:49I'm very happy with that.
21:51My favourite little part of my room is my front door.
21:54So I'm hoping that maybe this could be a training tool,
21:56putting things through letter boxes
21:58and maybe teaching dogs not to shred their owner's bills.
22:01Although they might quite like that to happen.
22:04Hello, hello, hello.
22:05Oh, my goodness.
22:07Hey, John.
22:08Look at this.
22:09It is, yeah.
22:10This is insane.
22:11Like, it's like every colour.
22:13Yeah.
22:14Oh, my goodness.
22:15And a door as well.
22:16And a door as well.
22:17A front door.
22:18So this is really, like, completely pop art.
22:21Yeah.
22:22Like, we've gone for it.
22:23It's going to be a full-on cartoon room.
22:24It's such a joyful room.
22:25I love it.
22:27Do you want to come see my furniture?
22:28Yeah, I'd love to.
22:31So this is all my...
22:32This is cartoon furniture.
22:33That's brilliant.
22:34Oh, Craig.
22:36Now I'm worried.
22:37Now I'm...
22:38I knew it was going to be amazing.
22:39But this...
22:40Yeah.
22:41It's blown me away.
22:42Oh, thank you.
22:43It's a lot.
22:44I hope I haven't gone too far.
22:46Right, I'm going to go run.
22:47I will catch you later.
22:48All right, mate.
22:49Take care.
22:50There's a lot going on in there.
22:53But it'd be really easy, having seen that,
22:55to get in my own head about it and start thinking,
22:57oh, friky, it's so different to what I've done.
23:01Then at the end of the day, Michelle and Sue may love cartoon rule.
23:06They may love something more kind of realistic.
23:08Just wait and see.
23:09John's reaction was quite like,
23:11oh, my God, lots of colour.
23:12So there's a concern I've gone too far.
23:14But when it's all done, it's all going to come together.
23:17It's all going to be homogenous and work.
23:19And I just have an amazing cartoon dog training room.
23:22Who wouldn't want that?
23:25Day one at Battersea is drawing to a close.
23:27It looks like the drawing I had in my head.
23:29And it's almost time for the designers
23:31to put their paws up for the day.
23:33I'm pleased for how it looks.
23:34I feel good about today.
23:36I'm pushing myself way far out of my comfort zone,
23:39trying to do new things, bring new colours.
23:41Maybe this is ill-placed confidence or happiness.
23:44I don't know.
23:45I'm happy. I'm happy.
23:46I'm surrounded by dogs.
23:47So you can't not be.
23:49It's got quite some bits on there.
23:51The room is feeling fun and playful.
23:53It's a lot of visions.
23:54Tomorrow, the two builds need finishing.
23:57So we've got the dog crate cover.
23:59So that's a big build.
24:00And then the tree needs finishing out as well.
24:02So yeah, there's a lot to do.
24:03The designers have just 12 hours left on the clock.
24:21Good morning.
24:22Good morning.
24:23Good morning.
24:24Good morning.
24:25OK.
24:26Back at it.
24:27We still have a lot to do today.
24:28Let's crack on.
24:29Cheers.
24:30Thanks a lot.
24:31Ah, listen at them old hound dogs.
24:34And like them, these transition rooms have many jobs to do.
24:38Tough to beat for them.
24:40Like keeping the dogs stimulated to stop them getting bored and frustrated.
24:44So these are the doggy steps.
24:49I wanted something zesty and fun.
24:52And it's just a gentle way of getting them used to those stairs.
24:55But also, if you've got a really, really active and enthusiastic dog
24:59and you're bringing them into that dining area I've created,
25:01you might want to burn off a little bit of energy first
25:03and you can up and over the stairs a few times.
25:06I'm pretty pleased with that.
25:08While John hopes his agility steps will get the dogs exercising...
25:12Oh, look, my poor plants.
25:14Oh, it smells good, though.
25:16Brian is hoping to get tails wagging with some sensory stimulation.
25:21My plants are pretty crucial.
25:23I've, like, really deliberately chosen plants
25:25that are good for the dogs to, like, truffle around in.
25:28They're all dog-friendly, of course.
25:31I think it's just really important,
25:32if you're going to bring the outside inside in a big way like I'm doing,
25:35turning it into a garden.
25:37I wanted it to be real.
25:38I wanted it to be that sensory experience for the dogs.
25:40We don't look cute.
25:42Don't you think, Piz?
25:43That's cute.
25:44That's cute.
25:45Yes, Piz!
25:50This is the scent wall where we're going to have herbs for the dogs to sniff.
25:55Some of the herbs should relax the dogs
25:58and let them sniff something different rather than just playing with toys in here.
26:03And it will be attached to the wall so they cannot knock it down, the dogs,
26:06and we'll give them more space to run around rather than having pots everywhere on the floor.
26:10But for Craig, he's hoping to stimulate the eyes with his pop art room.
26:15So I'm adding these black lines to really accentuate the whole cartoon feel for this room.
26:20This is my front garden, so I thought a brick wall for the outside of the house would be perfect.
26:25Craig?
26:27Hello.
26:28Craig?
26:29Hello.
26:30Hello.
26:31Are you interested in some double glazing?
26:33No, thank you.
26:34You need it.
26:37Look at this.
26:38It's so bold.
26:39It's so brash.
26:40I love it.
26:41Thank you very much.
26:42Why have you put a front door there?
26:44Well, I thought it would be a way they can train dogs not to bite the postman and stuff like that.
26:48Oh, so what will you do?
26:49Pop your package through there?
26:50Let me show you.
26:51You'd like to try my...
26:53It's a new knockout.
26:54Have a go.
26:55Who am I? The postman?
26:56Yes, very much so.
26:57Okay, coming up then.
26:58Got a delivery for Craig.
27:00Got a delivery.
27:02Ow!
27:05Did you bite me?
27:06What?
27:07Just a little bite.
27:08Just a nibble.
27:10So show us round your crib.
27:12Well, you find yourself in my well-appointed front yard.
27:15Lovely, and you get the sun as well.
27:17Very much.
27:18The lovely aspect.
27:19Come through to the front room.
27:20The lounge.
27:21Oh, okay.
27:23Oh, I'll take it.
27:26Listen, I love it, and I get it, and it's so vibrant and out there, but would you say you're taking a risk?
27:32Whether the whole colour scheme is going to appeal to Michelle, that's the danger, isn't it?
27:37Yeah, yeah.
27:38All right, well, listen, I'll be off.
27:39Lovely to see you.
27:40Bye-bye.
27:41I love your home.
27:43Bye-bye.
27:44See you soon.
27:45Have a good day.
27:46Thanks so much.
27:47Bye-bye.
27:48I'm still here.
27:49One key element of the transition rooms that Michelle has asked for is a space for relaxation.
27:59Well done.
28:00Well done.
28:01After all, training is exhausting for our furry friends, and they need a space to de-stress and let their new skills sink in.
28:13So we have the dining table going over the dog cage, so it gives the dog like a little secluded retreat moment if they should need it.
28:24Battersea has provided each designer with a crate which most have chosen to transform.
28:29Do you know what?
28:30It's almost kennel-like, isn't it?
28:31Yeah, it is.
28:32So I've been told the crate is great, and I should build something around it to make it like a hidden den.
28:39It's going to be like a planter on top, and the crate will slide in, and the dog will feel a bit like cosy and hidden in the planter.
28:48So it's bringing that garden scheme to life.
28:53I'm just trying to turn this into a cartoon kennel.
28:57I've got my biggest fan here.
28:59He's fanning, I'm drawing.
29:01So I think I'm going to dedicate this to my dog purdy.
29:06Oh, it looks amazing.
29:09Hi, Rita!
29:10Hi, Alan!
29:11Now this is a crate.
29:13And it's becoming a bunk bed.
29:15A bunk bed for the dogs!
29:17Yes!
29:18Aww!
29:19How are you going to make this crate more appetising for a dog?
29:21Cos my dog did not like a crate.
29:24I put her in the crate, and it was like, howl!
29:28And then it was game over.
29:30Yeah, so the top part is for the dogs that doesn't like to be in the cage.
29:33Yeah, yeah.
29:34So hopefully they like to sleep in here.
29:36Oh, it's like a hotel.
29:37Would you like the crate, sir, or would you like the bunk bed?
29:40Exactly.
29:41Now, is there a dog in your life?
29:43I've got Chico in my life.
29:45He's like adorable, sexy, clever.
29:48Sexy dog.
29:49Yeah, he is.
29:50There's not enough sexy dogs in the world.
29:51He is, yeah.
29:53If you were a dog, what kind of dog would you be?
29:56I think I'd be a chihuahua.
29:58You know what I mean?
30:00Get back!
30:01Yeah.
30:02Get back!
30:03Listen, good luck.
30:04Love it.
30:06See you soon.
30:07Bye!
30:08Rita always gives us extra, and this week she's pimped a dog crate.
30:11It's well made, of course, but these are transitional rooms for dogs about to move to a home.
30:17The crate has a slide, there's a bunk bed and a fence on the top.
30:21The dog must be thinking, where the hell are they taking me?
30:25This is my little dog canopy that's going to go over the dog bed.
30:30Briony is hoping to transport her doggies to a world of zen.
30:36They were like that, wouldn't they, Piers?
30:38It's like a doggy spa, you know?
30:41That's very soothing.
30:45Oh, my gosh.
30:47Piers!
30:48It's a playful scheme.
30:50It's a fun scheme.
30:51It's a calm scheme.
30:52Dogs pick up on human vibes.
30:54So if a human walks in and they feel a certain way, the dogs are going to pick up on that too.
31:00All the beds are in, but there's no time for snoozing.
31:03I am putting some of the slogans that Battersea uses onto these bones.
31:09Haven't done this before. Terrible time to learn.
31:15Thank goodness for that.
31:17And that will be suspended from the ceiling.
31:19At the photo wall.
31:20One done.
31:21Don't know how many to do.
31:24The blackboard is going up, which I'm really pleased with it.
31:28I wanted to give them the space of what you can have in the backyard and dining space.
31:33So I divided my room into two sections.
31:35I think that part, I'm really pleased with.
31:40With just an hour to go.
31:42Can they go in a wee bit?
31:43Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:44The designers need to make like a whippet and add the final details to make the dogs feel at home.
31:50The idea is to have an interesting backdrop behind the photo wall.
31:53Just add another layer of something.
31:55Probably the biggest design element of the room.
31:57So, yeah, let's definitely get this finished.
32:00No pop art room is complete without some speech bubble.
32:07My dog was obsessed with tennis balls.
32:09I'm drawing Chico on a chopping board that is going on the wall.
32:12He's going to be so excited when I show him this.
32:15It's been quite handy, actually, having a mum that does dog portraiture.
32:19I get to put up some of her artwork, which is quite a nice thing to do, isn't it?
32:22The portraits.
32:24I've had a piece and I thought, you know, the dog's a gardener in the gardens.
32:28This room is dedicated to my dog, Purdy, and now she's on the wall.
32:33We're really on the home straight now.
32:35You haven't got long, come on!
32:39You haven't got long, Craig! Craig!
32:43Alice is amazing!
32:45You must be so pleased.
32:46I am.
32:47Can I take a treat?
32:48I've been ever such a good boy.
33:00Here we go.
33:05Bradley!
33:06Yeah?
33:07You look so cute!
33:08Thanks!
33:09Bad news, your squirrel's dead.
33:32It's a wrap.
33:33Yes!
33:34Well done, guys.
33:35Absolutely brilliant.
33:36You happy?
33:37Yes.
33:38Got it finished?
33:39Thank you so much.
33:40Oh, Piers!
33:41Come on!
33:42There it is.
33:43That's it.
33:46Yeah, it's all right in here.
33:47Is it?
33:48It's a comfy...
33:49Yeah.
33:51Done.
33:59I'm glad you brought these guys along, because I think they're going to be a lot more useful than we are today.
34:02I'm an already, can I just say.
34:04Yeah, it's masterful control.
34:05Right.
34:07Fox, Dana, Michelle and TV presenter and dog lover Sue Perkins have arrived at Battersea.
34:14Sue is a champion for animal welfare and an ambassador of Battersea Dogs Home, so no better person to critique the designs.
34:23These rooms are transition spaces, that's why they're incredibly important.
34:27The dogs come in sometimes in a state of distress, not particularly well socialised, so they might find domestic spaces a little bit frightening.
34:33What I'd like to see from these rooms is a welcoming space, something where, at all times, the dog's emotional needs are being catered for.
34:41And I'm saying as a general note, Alsatians cannot stand mid-century design, so stay away from that, because, as I say, they will react in that environment.
34:49I wanted our designers to give me a space that was relaxing for our dogs, but also stimulating, durable and functional.
34:58So there's a lot they've got to balance.
35:00I wanted to bring the countryside to Battersea.
35:09It looks like a cottage and is relaxing for the dogs and is a good space to train the dogs.
35:16Let's check out Rita's room.
35:19Come on, baby, let's come on. In we go.
35:21Oh, I love the colourway.
35:23I'm liking big, chunky bits of furniture that can be chewed...
35:27No trip hazards.
35:28..and are not going to fall over too easily.
35:29Apart from the actual judges.
35:31I love a blackboard.
35:32My whole downstairs loo is a blackboard, because I used to forget everything, and only when I was having a weed, I think...
35:38OK, too much information.
35:40What am I doing on here, though? Am I teaching my dogs to weed?
35:43Yeah, there's an informal class there.
35:45But I like the fact that it means, A, it's zoned, but also it just feels more homely, actually.
35:50But I am wondering then what's going on on the other side.
35:54Is this going to be my sleep zone?
35:56And it is.
35:57Aha.
35:58Doggy bedroom with a little bit of a salt course, which I like.
36:01Everyone loves that before bed.
36:03This is like a double crate, isn't it?
36:05It's quite a steep incline as well, that thing.
36:07I think a dog's going to find it quite hard.
36:09For some of our smaller dogs as well, although she has put the fence around it,
36:12I wonder if that will be enough to stop them trying to do the kamikaze dive off there.
36:16I think what she's done with the walls is really cute.
36:18It is kind of beautiful.
36:20It's really, the colours are great, and it makes sense for the dog's colour range.
36:24I think we've got a little Sintergarden going on here.
36:26What have you got there? Is that a bit of...?
36:27That's a bit of rosemary.
36:29We've got basil. We've got some mint.
36:31Mint, yeah.
36:32I feel like this is a space I'd be very happy to be in as a drainer.
36:35Yeah.
36:36But it's absolutely perfectly functional for our doggos.
36:39It's a really, really good room, this.
36:42I mean, props to Rita.
36:43It's a really fantastic, restful, purposeful, inviting space for trainers and their dogs.
36:50Let's go outside, let's go outside in the sunshine.
36:57This was my biggest challenge yet.
36:59I didn't really know what a transition space was, but I feel like I've got the grasp of it.
37:03My design is a garden scheme, and I hope that translates that it is still a domestic environment.
37:08Come on, little mum. Come on, come on. Right.
37:12Check out this one, then. So, what do you think here?
37:15What do you think of this one?
37:16I find the colours very nice, but, of course, that's the human eye is registering
37:20that these are really lovely, sort of, simpatico colours,
37:23whereas for a dog, not much of this is going to register,
37:26because they see on the blue-yellow spectrum, I think.
37:29I like how graphically he's made the tree, using the big circles.
37:33Whether it's dog-friendly or not, I don't know, as is the mural here.
37:37I mean, I'm not sure dogs even see this, and if it's got no smell...
37:41I'm not sure that would register as anything other than maybe a shadow.
37:44What I'm enjoying is the sort of crushed squirrel detail.
37:47Yeah, we've got some roadkill.
37:48I don't know what happened to that before we came in the room.
37:52I can't help but thinking we asked for a home environment.
37:55Battersea has lovely outdoor real paddock areas
37:58for the dogs to run around and experience a garden.
38:01Did Bradley need to try and replicate one indoors?
38:04I think that's a good point. It doesn't feel like a domestic space.
38:06The majority of dogs are going to be experiencing the whole thing from down here,
38:10so I'm immediately looking at these little foldy chairs and thinking,
38:13oh, you don't want anyone jumping up on those.
38:15This is hazardous, you know?
38:16That falls, it makes a noise, and you've created a problem there.
38:19Dogs frightened of chairs.
38:20That would actually hurt if it fell over.
38:22I might sit down, actually.
38:24Ooh, that's good.
38:25I might play, look.
38:26This.
38:27Oh, that's amazing.
38:28And this is a tyre, so...
38:29Oh, that's good.
38:30That's brilliant.
38:31That's going to be chew-tastic worthy.
38:33I'd happily have that in my house.
38:34But I think my real issue with this room is over here.
38:37OK.
38:38This is the crate, and there's your nice seating area here,
38:41but then you've got the dog's sort of bedroom here,
38:44and you're just staring at it.
38:46And some dogs would view that as quite confrontational
38:48to be that close to where they're sleeping.
38:51So Bradley's not a dog person.
38:53He has a fish.
38:54It makes sense now because, of course,
38:56you can just stare at a fish while it's sleeping,
38:58and it doesn't have a problem when it wakes up.
39:04I've created a friendly, happy family dining space
39:07where you can welcome in your new part of your family.
39:10My worries are that Michelle and Sue may feel it's disjointed,
39:13that there are two halves that don't tie together.
39:16Yeah, I really don't want to be on the sofa.
39:19I hope that, you know, Michelle and Sue see the intent there.
39:22Oh, OK, what have you got in here, then?
39:25Nice.
39:26Oh, good.
39:27Straight there, the legs cocked.
39:28That's wonderful, wonderful work.
39:32There you go.
39:33That's fully drenched now in urine, which is great.
39:35Oh, look, so I love how they're running round and round
39:38John's agility course, but not up it.
39:41But it's quite a big structure to come into.
39:43And I think, again, thinking about the dog,
39:46you're coming into a room and you're not sure what's happening
39:48and suddenly, oh, hang on, it's agility time.
39:50So I'm not sure about that.
39:51I'm not desperately compelled by here.
39:53But if I sneak behind here, suddenly we've walked into a whole home.
39:59Massive dresser.
40:01Am I supposed to play on this too?
40:03So I don't quite understand what this is doing.
40:05If it's storage, I suppose,
40:07and it's just a big lumpy bit of furniture,
40:09but doggies just jump on that, aren't they?
40:12There doesn't seem to be a lot of purpose for the dog here.
40:16Because these are not dog toys.
40:18The colourways are lovely, I'm going to say that.
40:20If you're going to go for blues and yellows,
40:22which the dog can see, these are really very nice varieties.
40:26I think...
40:27Pretty pictures.
40:28My dog loves a picture wall, to be honest, Michelle.
40:30And also, I'm struggling with this dining area.
40:32That takes up so much space.
40:34You've got a reasonable sized dog, medium to large dog.
40:36You're shimmying around the side here to kind of decide...
40:39They're bumping into that.
40:40No, no, Rufus, get down, down, down, I say.
40:42No.
40:43Is this the first time you've roleplayed a Mastiff?
40:45You don't have a lot of room here
40:47to actually rough and tumble play with them and do all that.
40:50No.
40:51He's replicated home because we asked for a home environment,
40:54but he's not replicated workable, usable,
40:57functional home environment to train a dog.
40:59Yeah.
41:00I'm not sure it's hit that brief, if I'm honest.
41:03I've just tried to make this a lovely little sanctuary for the dogs.
41:12Obviously, my cable drum area is large.
41:15To me, it makes sense,
41:16but I suppose I don't know how she's going to see that.
41:18It's usable, functional,
41:20but it doesn't feel too much when you walk in.
41:22So, hopefully, I've got that right.
41:25Right, let's let the experts in first.
41:28There you go.
41:29Done.
41:30That's it.
41:31Well done, darlings.
41:32Yeah.
41:33This is honeymoon suite meets obstacle course.
41:36There's a lot going on in here, though, is it?
41:38There is.
41:39It's slightly overwhelming.
41:40In fact, now I've just seen cartoon of a snaffy,
41:42so I'm slightly entranced by that and need to just telescope back.
41:45Look!
41:46There's a basset for you.
41:47Doggies in there.
41:48There's so many beautiful dogs here.
41:50What is that?
41:51What on earth is that breed?
41:53It's quite cute, though, isn't it?
41:54It's incredible.
41:55I really like it.
41:56I think it's nice.
41:57It's jolly.
41:58I'm interested this because it's very complicated.
42:01The dog has to work to get to its place of rest,
42:03which would work for some dogs and not for others, I think.
42:06Come on, darling.
42:07Do you want to go on the ramp?
42:08See if she'll go on.
42:09Hey, baby.
42:10Hey, baby.
42:11Do you want to come up here?
42:12Not interested.
42:13We're assuming that a dog would very neatly go up the ramp,
42:16jump from one toadstool to the next, sit on here beautifully.
42:19Yeah.
42:20But most dogs are just going to leap off and somehow...
42:22Onto a floor that's laminate.
42:24But I like that we've got real plants in here,
42:26so the doggies have got something really good to sniff.
42:29Yes.
42:30So these plants are all safe for dogs, and that's great.
42:31What I do like about this, actually,
42:33is that there's something nice about the dog feeling protected at the back
42:36so they're not too exposed.
42:37I do like that.
42:38There's a good little photo op there, isn't it?
42:40I mean, that's where a little dog is going to do itself here.
42:43You know, there's some lovely things being used here.
42:46It's just whether we could possibly have dived into a little bit more
42:50of what would be really supremely dog-friendly.
42:53I'm struggling a little bit to know if that balance is right
42:56between what the dogs need and what the humans need.
42:59For me, it's like the workable area for a dog is the crate over there,
43:03and we've just seen our judges not want to engage with any of the platforms
43:08that are specifically for them.
43:10They've actually just eaten some grass and done a wee.
43:19I'd like to think that Battersea sees it as being on brand,
43:22and I really hope it translates that I've really designed for the dog
43:26in this scenario rather than the human eye.
43:29It's all about practicality, it's all about the dogs,
43:32and it's all about finding them their forever homes.
43:34Come on, guys.
43:36You, you.
43:37Judging commence.
43:38Come on.
43:39There we go.
43:40Hello.
43:41I know I'm excited too.
43:42I'm going to give full marks for, again,
43:44the thought about the colour palette for the dogs,
43:46so the blues and the yellows.
43:47There's a purity of the blue and the white, the Battersea colours.
43:50Here are some of the taglines for some of the campaigns that we've done
43:54to bring the general public into the Battersea vibe, so that's great.
43:58It's on brand, it's, dare I say it, a little bit corporate,
44:02but it arguably absolutely works,
44:05because we just saw our little canine judges absolutely romp around this place.
44:10Yeah.
44:11They seem to be really enjoying it.
44:12They've jumped onto the sofas, because those are all a little bit lower as well.
44:15Yeah.
44:16So we know it's a nice, soft, squidgy, easily accessible space for the dogs.
44:19So we've got what I asked for, which is practical, durable,
44:24relaxing.
44:25Hosed-downable.
44:26Hosed-downable.
44:27It's got all of that.
44:34I'm pleased with the whole vibe of that room.
44:36It feels almost otherworldly.
44:38You feel like you're walking into a cartoon.
44:40It's really fun.
44:41I've gone 100% cray.
44:43It felt great for me, and I really, really enjoyed it.
44:46I just hope that joy translates, and that they see that.
44:50Come on.
44:51In we come.
44:52Yeah.
44:53Oh, you're good.
44:54Oh, this is spectacular.
44:56I walked into a cartoon.
44:58I love it.
44:59It's really good fun.
45:00I love a bit of pop art, and this is just lovely.
45:03But also, we've got real things that the doggies can play with.
45:07Yes.
45:08Is this Craig's dog here?
45:09Craig adopted a dog, actually, from Battersea.
45:11Sadly, it's passed now, but the room is an ode to Purdy.
45:15Oh, I do think that is super clever, having a door, though,
45:19because that's something you need to practise with, isn't it?
45:21What happens when the bell goes, when you open it, not jumping up.
45:24Letters through the letterbox.
45:26Love that.
45:27Let's have a look.
45:28Let's go through the magic door.
45:29Oh, very nice.
45:31Actually, Joan, this is so fun.
45:32We're outdoors now.
45:34This is brilliant.
45:35It's taken one of the ugliest things to have in the house,
45:38and he's put a picture roof on it, and it's transformed that.
45:41It's fantastic.
45:42Craig has had a lot of fun with this design.
45:45I mean, every surface has been thought about.
45:48And it's zoned again.
45:49You've got how to behave in the lounge,
45:51you've got how to behave when the door goes,
45:53and then you've got how to behave at the dinner table,
45:55so table manners.
45:56Yeah.
45:57It's beautifully done.
45:58It makes me happy.
45:59It makes me giggly.
46:00And I want to have that energy,
46:01because if I have that energy in this room,
46:03the dog's picking up on it.
46:05Exactly.
46:06And that's brilliant.
46:07Well done, Craig.
46:09While Michelle and Sue head off to make their decision,
46:12it's time for the clients and the designers
46:15to have a sniff around the finished rooms.
46:18Who let the dogs out?
46:20Who?
46:21Who?
46:22Who?
46:23Who?
46:24Who?
46:25Who?
46:26Who?
46:27Who?
46:28Who let the dogs out?
46:29Oh!
46:30Oh!
46:31Look at it!
46:32No way!
46:33Wow, there's lots going on in here.
46:36That's a big beast, isn't it?
46:38Yeah.
46:39Is that effective?
46:40She's got a doggy bunk bed.
46:42Do you want a top of a bunk?
46:43Not really a fan of a cage, so I think I'll go for top bunk.
46:46I love how he's done the doghouse, like an actual doghouse in the garden,
46:51with the roof.
46:52It's so clever.
46:53Yeah.
46:54Oh, my word.
47:11This looks good.
47:13I do think Don's feels a lot more like a home than mine.
47:17It definitely does feel homely here, doesn't it?
47:19This is the photo moment for the dogs.
47:23Isn't that so good?
47:24And it's about to see blue.
47:26Oh.
47:27Oh, it's a feast for the eyes, isn't it?
47:29Is that a squirrel?
47:30Oh, hello, bro.
47:32Hello.
47:33Who let your dogs out?
47:36Who let your dogs out?
47:40The designers are back in Brighton to find out who will make it through to next week
47:49and who will end up on the sofa.
47:52Oh, here they are.
47:54Come on in.
47:55Oh, yeah.
47:56Oh.
47:57So, did you enjoy Battersea Dogs Home?
47:59We did.
48:00Yes.
48:01Be honest, who came home with a puppy?
48:05Couldn't you just take them all home?
48:07They were all lovely.
48:08Bradley, did that roadkill squirrel ever get up the tree?
48:12Let's hope so.
48:13And Bryony, did you get any other Dead Celebrities Dogs to put on your Pet Cemetery wallpaper?
48:20It was a nice touch, Alan.
48:22Yeah.
48:23No, it was a lovely touch.
48:26It was a lovely touch.
48:27Brought back so many memories.
48:29Listen, these rooms are going to make a big difference for those dogs, so well done.
48:34But who stood out from the pack and who was barking up the wrong tree?
48:40Let's call in Michelle and Sue.
48:43Hi.
48:44Hi, guys.
48:45Hello.
48:46That was a tough one, wasn't it?
48:48Yes.
48:49Not only did you have to get in the mind of the dog and create a superbly pet-friendly space,
48:54but also a person-friendly space for the handlers.
48:57I'm really here as a proxy for the real judges.
49:00Dana and Fox, the Pomeranians.
49:03Dana was very clear about what she wanted.
49:06She wanted a very interactive space that was safe.
49:10And Fox wanted to urinate on everything.
49:13And she did.
49:14So she is delighted.
49:17So, which of the designers deserves best in show?
49:21My standout space this week.
49:27Second week in a row.
49:29Cray, congratulations.
49:31It was so brilliant.
49:33You absolutely nailed fun for the user, but also for the doggies.
49:38But it's so unexpected.
49:40Pop art and pooches are not things that I would ordinarily put together, but it worked.
49:44I know.
49:45I mean, normally you'd associate something like fauvism with dogs.
49:51Thank you very much.
49:52I was scared I went a bit too bonkers, but it paid off.
49:56So, who else is going through?
49:58Well, also for balancing that tricky thing between people-friendly and pooch-perfect, Rita.
50:05Congratulations.
50:08I love this and I love the way it was zoned.
50:10You know, you all had the challenge of that big pillar in the middle of the room.
50:14And I thought you dealt with that brilliantly.
50:16I'd also like to take through to next week, Victoria.
50:22We did feel your space felt a little bit corporate, but you did nail the brief.
50:26So, well done.
50:28But that does mean that John, Bryony and Bradley, I would like to see you on my sofa.
50:33OK.
50:34Congratulations to everyone else and we'll see you next week.
50:38Well done, guys.
50:39Well done.
50:43The way you say I'll see you on my sofa is an incredible high-wire balance between the stern and the erotic.
50:49Well, thank you.
50:50You're welcome.
50:51You're welcome.
50:52Well done.
50:53Well done.
50:54Well done.
50:55Well done.
50:56What an experience.
50:57It's an amazing confidence boost to hear those fabulous words.
51:00You've won standout space two weeks in a row.
51:03I was really worried that I had just gone a little bit too far.
51:06It was so vastly different from all of the other rooms.
51:09But you've got to push it a little bit.
51:12Good luck on the sofa.
51:14We'll see you on the other side.
51:15Yes.
51:16Good luck.
51:17Bye, guys.
51:18Let's have a link. Come on.
51:19I'll lead you.
51:21I'm not surprised to find myself there.
51:24I'm 100% ready to fight for my plays.
51:27And hopefully, they see the potential to suit me through to the next challenge.
51:30I am feeling disappointed about being on the sofa.
51:33I did love what I've done.
51:34But it will be great to get Michelle's feedback.
51:37Yeah, I've done my best.
51:38And that's all I can do.
51:40I would love to take on the next challenge.
51:42I'm not ready to go home just yet.
51:44I just want to be designing.
51:49Hi, guys.
51:50Hello, hello.
51:54Don, if we start with you.
51:55Yes.
51:56We felt that you really went down the, I'm creating a home environment.
51:59Yeah.
52:00So we had a whopping big dresser, dining table, chairs.
52:03Yep.
52:04We couldn't actually get around the chairs.
52:05OK.
52:06I thought if you're bringing this new family member home with you,
52:09it's really important that the dogs learn how to kind of act around a dining table.
52:13You don't want them kind of leaping up and taking food off the table.
52:16And I thought that would be a nice opportunity to kind of train the dogs in that way.
52:20Did we need such a big dining table to do that training?
52:23Probably not to do that, I think.
52:25Or maybe not four chairs, actually, in hindsight.
52:29I'd try to create, initially when you came in, an area where if we had a very, very energetic dog in quite a small space,
52:36we'd be able to burn off some energy on the steps.
52:38But coming into that space and immediately being greeted by, you know, a small flight of steps,
52:43possibly quite intimidating for a dog going into that space.
52:45OK.
52:46Because from their height, it would look like a wall or a semi-permanent structure
52:50that they'd have to sort of jump over or get round.
52:53And some of those dogs are skittish.
52:56I mean, I had designed it in such a way that every item in there could be moved and reconfigured within that space.
53:02So the dresser's on wheels, which lock down and allow you to move it to another location.
53:06The stairs are on wheels.
53:07OK.
53:08So you could swap those round if you wanted.
53:09I think it's a very good idea to have portable furniture in a space like that.
53:12Bryony, tell me a little bit more about yours, because I really read that space as one of your spaces.
53:18It had all your hallmarks.
53:19We had the wicker.
53:20We had your natural materials.
53:22But how appropriate, really, do you think it was for a dog?
53:25Because our little test judge dogs, they weren't going on any of those ramps.
53:29What sort of dog did you have in mind?
53:31Well, I've had two Great Danes in my life, so I feel like I probably lent that way of thinking larger.
53:37I've also had a Chihuahua in my life, so she was quite bold though, so she probably would have used the ramps.
53:42So potentially, I've just made it too personal, thinking of just my dogs and knowing them so well and knowing what they would do,
53:49rather than thinking of these dogs that perhaps would be more intimidated to do things like that.
53:54But I really loved the green space you brought in. I love the natural foliage.
53:59It was really nice to have all those fresh herbs.
54:02And it made Michelle calm, which is very important in that space,
54:05because she can get easily riled when she's confined.
54:08I'm so pleased.
54:11Bryony and Bradley, you both took a more garden theme.
54:14Yeah.
54:15Clearly Battersea has garden spaces outside.
54:18And so, Bradley, I'm interested to know why you chose a garden space.
54:23Essentially, I wanted to communicate it as potential dog owners could see that dog in their own garden environment.
54:31So that's where I was thinking it's the best of both worlds.
54:34We did walk in and think, oh, OK, how lovely, but then it's like, OK, but the dog doesn't understand that.
54:40Sometimes I felt that more boisterous dogs could have careered into some of the sharper ends of some of the things that you put in there.
54:46Yeah, but the furniture was in place to, like, communicate, like, this is, like, an outside dining area.
54:52But I do see where you're coming from.
54:54From fostering sometimes some rescue dogs who are not huge fans of direct eye contact,
55:01it's you've got your sofa directly facing where the dog sleeps.
55:03Oh, OK.
55:04So it could be slightly sort of like, are you awake now?
55:07Slight serial killer vibes.
55:09OK.
55:10I didn't envy you this one, guys.
55:12And even though you're on the sofa, I think, you know,
55:14I would take elements from every single one of your designs and make something fabulous.
55:19You know, I think you all had flashes of real inspiration and real genius, I would say that.
55:24I feel like I'm really starting to get to know you, which makes it really hard.
55:30The person that I will send home this week...
55:39..is Bradley.
55:41So, yeah.
55:44..that there was something that just got a little bit more missed by you...
55:47OK. ..than the others.
55:48..I've learned so much.
55:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
55:50I really have.
55:51And I really appreciate having the opportunity to be on, like, this competition.
55:56So, yeah.
55:57Bless you.
55:58Go and grip. Come on.
55:59Come on.
56:00Oh, come on.
56:01You've been so much fun.
56:02You've been so much fun.
56:03You've been so much fun.
56:04Well, thank you.
56:05You've been great.
56:06Send my love to Cilla the goldfish.
56:08Oh, love to.
56:09Have some middle-aged lady on you.
56:10I don't know.
56:11I don't know.
56:12I'm coming in, too.
56:15Well done, darling.
56:19I am feeling gutters.
56:22I would have loved to stay on in the competition, but the dog's got me.
56:26This is not the end.
56:28This is just the start.
56:29It's going to be a fun ride.
56:30I think I'll stick to our Cilla in the fish tank.
56:33I'm really sad Bradley's going.
56:36I just love what he comes up with.
56:39I think he's totally unique and wonderful as a human and a designer.
56:42So, yeah, he's a real loves.
56:44I'm feeling kind of obviously relieved to be through, but Bradley's just such a lovely
56:49person and that's reflected in the space as he creates.
56:52I'm super sad to see him go.
56:54Every week Bradley has given me such visual joy and this week was no exception.
56:59Loads to look at, but I think I needed a little bit more on the sensory level just
57:04for our dogs.
57:06Next week, we're back to designing for humans, but very fit humans at that.
57:11The designers hit Twickenham.
57:14Will you get a touchdown with this design?
57:17I'll try.
57:18Creating premium hospitality boxes.
57:22Bit posh.
57:23That's a bit bougie, isn't it?
57:24For die-hard rugby fans.
57:26Sexy stripes.
57:29Can I touch your balls?
57:30Oh, she can.
57:31I hit my mind.
57:33It's mad.
57:34It's more fun.
57:34I mean.
57:36I hear a stylus.
57:37Ha ha ha ha.
57:38Yeah, fantastic.
57:39We nearers, we queduds.
