00:00It was a tense night in Romania as the first round of presidential elections took place.
00:06Giorgio Simeon, the ultra-nationalist candidate, won by a landslide, gathering over 40% of the votes.
00:14It was when the exit polls came in that the actual tide battle for the second place was being fought
00:22between the government's coalition candidate, Crin Antonescu, and the independent candidate,
00:28Niku Shordan, who is also the mayor of Bucharest.
00:32It was hours later when the votes were being counted and when the results finally came in
00:38that we found out Niku Shordan is going on in the second round of elections on the 18th of May.
00:46Over 53% of Romanians voted in this first round of elections, both in Romania and across the globe.
00:53There are concerns that a vote for Simeon might mean isolating Romania.
00:59It remains to be seen what will happen in the next two weeks, what will people choose to do when they go out to vote,
01:07what will they vote for, whether European continuity or isolationism.
01:12Israel has approved plans to capture the entire Gaza Strip and remain in the territory for an unspecified amount of time,
01:25according to two Israeli officials.
01:28If implemented, the move could vastly expand Israel's operations in the territory
01:33and likely bring fierce international opposition.
01:35Officials said the plan is meant to help Israel achieve its aims of defeating Hamas and freeing the remaining hostages.
01:44It would also push hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to southern Gaza,
01:48what would likely exacerbate an already dire humanitarian crisis.
01:53Israel has blocked the entry of all humanitarian aid into Gaza for two months
01:58and says it also seeks to prevent Hamas from distributing aid under the new plans.
02:03According to an internal memo sent to aid organizations,
02:07Israel wants to use private security companies to control aid distribution.
02:12The United Nations said in a statement it would not participate in the plan,
02:16saying it violates its core principles.
02:23U.S. President Donald Trump is now targeting films made abroad
02:27in the latest expansion of his ongoing tariff war.
02:30He has threatened 100 percent tariffs on international productions,
02:35accusing other countries of destroying Hollywood's film industry.
02:39Hollywood is being destroyed.
02:41Now, you have an incompetent, grossly incompetent governor that allows that to happen,
02:46so I'm not just blaming other nations,
02:48but other nations, a lot of them, have stolen our movie industry.
02:52And I'm saying if they're not willing to make a movie inside the United States,
02:58we should have a tariff on movies that come in.
03:01Trump also announced that he wants to reopen the notorious and long-shuttered Alcatraz prison,
03:07suggesting illegal immigrants could be detained there without trial.
03:11And I guess because the judges, so many of these radicalized judges,
03:17they want to have trials for every single thing of it.
03:20Every single person that's in our country illegally, that came in illegally,
03:24that would mean millions of trials, and it's just so ridiculous what's happening.
03:29And it's long been a symbol, Alcatraz, of whatever it is.
03:34I mean, it's a sad symbol, but it's a symbol of law and order.
03:40Bringing Alcatraz up to modern-day standards would likely be an expensive and challenging endeavor.
03:46It was shut more than 60 years ago due to crumbling infrastructure and high maintenance costs.
03:52Once a new pope is chosen, the election is announced by a cardinal from the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica,
04:02who tells the world,
04:04Abemus Papam, Latin for, we have a new pope.
04:07Now, before the new pope appears in public to greet the crowd,
04:12he will be dressed in white formal purple vestments.
04:15Now, we've come to a shop near the Vatican to meet the tailor,
04:18who's preparing the new pope's garments and to uncover the secrets behind them.
04:24Let's take a look.
04:48In misure diverse, significa un cardinale, oppure il papa un po' snello,
04:55un papa medio-grosso, un papa grande, come potrebbe essere Giovanni XXIII,
05:00ma poi quello che verrà fuori, Dio solo lo sa.
05:04Raniero Mancinelli has made robes for the last of three popes,
05:07with each one having his own style.
05:09Ognuno aveva le sue esigenze.
05:13Francesco, papa Francesco,
05:15lui desiderava un tessuto molto leggero,
05:19molto economico, semplice, normale,
05:23e io sto a fare le talari attualmente dello stesso materiale,
05:27leggero, normale, non costoso.
05:31Poi il papa che verrà, se mi richiede da me,
05:34poi vedremo che tessuto gli piacerà e che tessuto vorrà.
05:39The VE Day 18th Anniversary commemoration started in London on Monday,
05:47with thousands lining the streets.
05:52A military parade near Parliament and Buckingham Palace
05:55began four days of pageantry.
05:59Around 1,300 British troops marched,
06:01joined by soldiers from NATO allies and Ukraine.
06:09King Charles III took the salute as the procession passed Buckingham Palace.
06:17At noon, Big Ben told,
06:19and actor Timothy Spall recited Churchill's 1945 victory speech.
06:24The anniversary is on May 8th,
06:27but the commemorations were brought forward due to the UK public holiday.
06:32The Cenotaph War Memorial was uniquely draft in Union flags,
06:37reportedly for the first time since 1920.
06:44Spectators stressed the importance of honoring those who died for freedom.
06:47At least 82 journalists lost their lives in the course of their work last year,
06:59the United Nations said,
07:01as the world marked Press Freedom Day.
07:04The figures showed a 10% increase compared to 2023,
07:08and a sharp difference with the 1.24 reported deaths
07:12released earlier this year
07:14by the Committee to Protect Journalist CPJ.
07:18According to the CPJ,
07:19nearly two-thirds of the murdered journalist and media workers
07:23were Palestinians covering the Gaza conflict.
07:26The Palestinian people are doing from the street,
07:30they are doing in the streets,
07:31they are doing in any place to get the picture,
07:34and it is a disaster,
07:34and it is a waste,
07:35to prevent the events and actions,
07:38and the actions of the crime.
07:39Today, we came here,
07:41in the street,
07:42we are doing in this place,
07:44just to send our message to the world,
07:46and send our message to the world,
07:48and send our message to the world,
07:51to the world,
07:51that this country is a bad thing.
07:52Local sources reported that repeated Israeli air strikes
07:56have destroyed the vast majority of press offices in Gaza,
08:00forcing media workers to operate from the streets
08:02or any location
08:04where commercial internet access is available.
08:07According to the CPJ,
08:09the number of conflicts globally has doubled
08:11in the past five years,
08:13which is reflected on the high number of deaths
08:15of journalists in many nations,
08:17including Sudan, Pakistan, and Myanmar.
08:20Austria will not implement its controversial ban
08:28on family reunification for migrants
08:30until it has been cleared by the courts.
08:32That is what Chancellor Christian Stocker told Euronews.
08:37With this step,
08:39Vienna wants to protect the system from overloading,
08:42but critics have objected that the plan
08:44was not compatible with the European law.
09:06Stocker referred to what he said were painful migration experiences
09:11of 2015 and 2022.
09:15He claimed Europe needs to learn lessons from these periods
09:18and believes illegal migration has to be reduced significantly
09:22and deportations carried out consistently.
09:25What we want is,
09:27that if someone has no title of us
09:30and doesn't have legal in Europe
09:33or in Europe or in Europe
09:34or in Europe,
09:34that he will also lose again.
09:37If only 20%,
09:39as we have heard today,
09:41from those who have no rights to the European Union
09:45and the same countries,
09:47it is just too low.
09:49That should actually be 100%.
09:52100% would be not easy to reach,
09:54but the goal must be 100%.
09:56In recent years,
09:59Austria has been confronted
10:00with high numbers of people seeking protection,
10:03particularly from Syria and Afghanistan.
10:06The government in Vienna says
10:08the country's systems are currently working at capacity,
10:11especially in the education,
10:13health and social sectors.
10:15The hard-right nationalist candidate George Simeon
10:24secured a decisive win on Sunday
10:26in the first round of Romania's presidential election.
10:31Far behind in second place
10:33is Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan,
10:36who will face Simeon in the runoff.
10:40Dan is an independent candidate
10:42who unexpectedly surpassed the coalition candidate
10:44Crin Antunescu.
10:46The vote took place for a second time
11:10after Romania's top court
11:12annulled the previous election
11:14following allegations of electoral violations
11:16and Russian interference.
11:19Far-right outsider Colleen Georgescu,
11:21who topped that round,
11:22is under investigation
11:23and was barred from the rerun.
11:26Romania now faces a tough battle
11:28in the second round in two weeks,
11:30where it will have to choose
11:31between an inward nationalist candidate
11:33and a pro-EU and pro-NATO one.
