00:04From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, by God's will,
00:10and from our brother Timothy,
00:12to the church of God in Corinth,
00:15and to all God's people throughout Achaia,
00:18May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ
00:21give you grace and peace.
00:23Paul gives thanks to God.
00:25Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
00:31the merciful Father,
00:33the God from whom all help comes.
00:36He helps us in all our troubles,
00:39so that we are able to help others who have all kinds of troubles,
00:44using the same help that we ourselves have received from God.
00:49Just as we have a share in Christ's many sufferings,
00:53so also, through Christ, we share in God's great help.
00:58If we suffer, it is for your help and salvation.
01:02If we are helped, then you too are helped,
01:05and given the strength to endure with patience
01:08the same sufferings that we also endure.
01:12So our hope in you is never shaken.
01:16We know that just as you share in our sufferings,
01:19you also share in the help we receive.
01:23We want to remind you, friends,
01:25of the trouble we had in the province of Asia.
01:29The burdens laid upon us were so great and so heavy
01:33that we gave up all hope of staying alive.
01:37We felt that the death sentence had been passed on us.
01:41But this happened so that we should rely not on ourselves,
01:47but only on God, who raises the dead.
01:51From such terrible dangers of death He saved us,
01:54and will save us.
01:56And we have placed our hope in Him,
01:59that He will save us again,
02:01as you help us by means of your prayers for us.
02:05So it will be that the many prayers for us will be answered,
02:10and God will bless us,
02:12and many will raise their voices to Him in thanksgiving for us.
02:18The Change in Paul's Plans
02:20We are proud that our conscience assures us
02:24that our lives in this world,
02:26and especially our relations with you,
02:29have been ruled by God-given frankness and sincerity,
02:33by the power of God's grace,
02:35and not by human wisdom.
02:38We write to you only what you can read and understand.
02:42But even though you now understand us only in part,
02:46I hope that you will come to understand us completely,
02:50so that in the day of our Lord Jesus,
02:53you can be as proud of us as we shall be of you.
02:57I was so sure of all this
02:59that I made plans at first to visit you,
03:03in order that you might be blessed twice.
03:06For I plan to visit you on my way to Macedonia,
03:09and again on my way back,
03:12in order to get help from you for my trip to Judea.
03:16In planning this, did I appear fickle?
03:19When I make my plans,
03:20do I make them from selfish motives,
03:23ready to say yes, yes, and no, no at the same time?
03:27As surely as God speaks the truth,
03:31my promise to you was not a yes and a no.
03:35For Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
03:38who was preached among you by Silas,
03:40Timothy, and myself,
03:42is not one who is yes and no.
03:45On the contrary,
03:47He is God's yes,
03:49for it is He who is the yes
03:51to all of God's promises.
03:53This is why through Jesus Christ our Amen
03:56is said to the glory of God.
04:00It is God Himself who makes us,
04:02together with you,
04:04sure of our life in union with Christ.
04:07It is God Himself who has set us apart,
04:10who has placed His mark of ownership upon us,
04:14and who has given us the Holy Spirit in our hearts
04:17as the guarantee of all that He has in store for us.
04:22I call God as my witness.
04:25He knows my heart.
04:27It was in order to spare you
04:29that I decided not to go to Corinth.
04:32We are not trying to dictate to you
04:34what you must believe.
04:36We know that you stand firm in the faith.
04:39Instead, we are working with you
04:41for your own happiness.
04:47So I made up my mind
04:51not to come to you again to make you sad.
04:54For if I were to make you sad,
04:56who would be left to cheer me up?
04:59Only the very persons I had made sad.
05:02That is why I wrote that letter to you.
05:05I did not want to come to you
05:07and be made sad by the very people
05:09who should make me glad.
05:12For I am convinced
05:13that when I am happy,
05:15then all of you are happy too.
05:17I wrote you with a greatly troubled
05:20and distressed heart
05:21and with many tears.
05:24My purpose was not to make you sad,
05:26but to make you realize
05:28how much I love you all.
05:30Forgiveness for the offender.
05:33Now, if anyone has made somebody sad,
05:37he has not done it to me,
05:38but to all of you,
05:40in part at least.
05:41I say this because
05:43I do not want to be too hard on him.
05:45It is enough that this person
05:47has been punished in this way
05:49by most of you.
05:51Now, however,
05:52you should forgive him
05:53and encourage him
05:55in order to keep him
05:57from becoming so sad
05:58as to give up completely.
06:01And so I beg you
06:02to let him know
06:03that you really do love him.
06:05I wrote you that letter
06:07because I wanted to find out
06:09how well you had stood the test
06:11and whether you are always ready
06:13to obey my instructions.
06:16When you forgive people
06:17for what they have done,
06:18I forgive them too.
06:20For when I forgive,
06:22if indeed I need to forgive anything,
06:24I do it in Christ's presence
06:26because of you
06:27in order to keep Satan
06:29from getting the upper hand over us.
06:31For we know what his plans are.
06:35Paul's Anxiety in Troas
06:37When I arrived in Troas
06:40to preach the good news
06:41about Christ,
06:43I found that the Lord
06:44had opened the way
06:45for the work there.
06:46But I was deeply worried
06:48because I could not find
06:50our brother Titus.
06:52So I said goodbye
06:53to the people there
06:54and went on to Macedonia.
06:57Victory through Christ
06:59But thanks be to God,
07:02for in union with Christ
07:04we are always led by God
07:05as prisoners
07:06in Christ's victory procession.
07:09God uses us
07:10to make the knowledge about Christ
07:12spread everywhere
07:14like a sweet fragrance.
07:16For we are like
07:17a sweet-smelling incense
07:19offered by Christ to God,
07:21which spreads among those
07:23who are being saved
07:24and those who are being lost.
07:27For those who are being lost
07:29it is a deadly stench
07:31that kills.
07:32But for those who are being saved
07:34it is a fragrance
07:36that brings life.
07:38Who then is capable
07:39for such a task?
07:42We are not like so many others
07:44who handle God's message
07:45as if it were cheap merchandise.
07:48But because God has sent us
07:50we speak with sincerity
07:52in his presence
07:53as servants of Christ.
07:55Chapter 3
08:01Servants of the New Covenant
08:03Does this sound as if
08:06we were again boasting
08:07about ourselves?
08:09Could it be that
08:10like some other people
08:12we need letters of recommendation
08:14to you or from you?
08:17You yourselves
08:18are the letter we have
08:19written on our hearts
08:21for everyone to know
08:22and read.
08:23It is clear
08:25that Christ himself
08:26wrote this letter
08:27and sent it by us.
08:30It is written
08:30not with ink
08:31but with the spirit
08:33of the living God
08:34and not on stone tablets
08:36but on human hearts.
08:39We say this
08:40because we have confidence
08:41in God through Christ.
08:44There is nothing in us
08:45that allows us to claim
08:46that we are capable
08:48of doing this work.
08:50The capacity we have
08:51comes from God.
08:53It is he who made us
08:55capable of serving
08:56the new covenant
08:57which consists not
08:59of a written law
09:00but of the spirit.
09:02The written law
09:03brings death
09:04but the spirit
09:05gives life.
09:07The law was carved
09:08in letters
09:09on stone tablets
09:10and God's glory
09:12appeared when it was given.
09:14Even though the brightness
09:15on Moses' face
09:17was fading
09:17it was so strong
09:19that the people
09:20of Israel
09:21could not keep
09:22their eyes
09:22fixed on him.
09:24If the law
09:25which brings death
09:26when it is in force
09:27came with such glory
09:29how much greater
09:31is the glory
09:31that belongs
09:32to the activity
09:33of the spirit.
09:35The system
09:36which brings
09:36condemnation
09:37was glorious.
09:39How much more glorious
09:40is the activity
09:41which brings salvation.
09:43We may say that
09:45because of the far
09:46brighter glory
09:47now the glory
09:48that was so bright
09:49in the past
09:50is gone.
09:52For if there was glory
09:53in that which lasted
09:54for a while
09:55how much more glory
09:57is there
09:58in that which lasts
09:59forever.
10:00Because we have
10:02this hope
10:02we are very bold.
10:04We are not like Moses
10:06who had to put a veil
10:07over his face
10:08so that the people
10:10of Israel
10:10would not see
10:12the brightness
10:12fade and disappear.
10:14Their minds
10:15indeed were closed
10:17and to this very day
10:19their minds
10:20are covered
10:20with the same veil
10:22as they read
10:23the books
10:23of the Old Covenant.
10:25The veil is removed
10:27only when a person
10:28is joined to Christ.
10:30Even today
10:31whenever they read
10:32the law of Moses
10:33the veil still
10:35covers their minds.
10:37But it can be removed.
10:39As the scripture
10:40says about Moses
10:41his veil was removed
10:43when he turned
10:44to the Lord.
10:45Now the Lord
10:46in this passage
10:48is the Spirit
10:48and where the Spirit
10:50of the Lord
10:51is present
10:52there is freedom.
10:54All of us then
10:55reflect the glory
10:56of the Lord
10:57with uncovered faces
10:59and that same glory
11:00coming from the Lord
11:02who is the Spirit
11:03transforms us
11:05into his likeness
11:06in an ever greater
11:07degree of glory.
11:13Chapter 4
11:14Spiritual Treasure
11:16in Clay Pots
11:17God in his mercy
11:20has given us
11:21this work to do
11:22and so we do not
11:24become discouraged.
11:26We put aside
11:27all secret
11:28and shameful deeds.
11:30We do not act
11:31with deceit
11:32nor do we falsify
11:33the word of God.
11:35In the full light
11:36of truth
11:37we live in God's sight
11:39and try to commend
11:40ourselves
11:41to everyone's
11:42good conscience.
11:44For if the gospel
11:45we preach
11:45is hidden
11:46it is hidden
11:47only from those
11:48who are being lost.
11:50They do not believe
11:51because their minds
11:53have been kept
11:54in the dark
11:54by the evil God
11:56of this world.
11:58He keeps them
11:58from seeing
11:59the light
12:00shining on them

12:02from the good news
12:03about the glory
12:05of Christ
12:05who is the exact
12:07likeness of God.
12:09For it is not
12:10ourselves
12:11that we preach.
12:12We preach
12:13Jesus Christ

12:16as your servants
12:17for Jesus' sake.
12:19The God
12:19who said
12:20out of darkness
12:21the light
12:22shall shine
12:23is the same God
12:24who made his light
12:25shine in our hearts
12:27to bring us
12:28the knowledge
12:29of God's glory
12:30shining in the face
12:32of Christ.
12:33Yet we who have
12:34this spiritual treasure
12:36are like common
12:37clay pots
12:38in order to show
12:40that the supreme
12:41power belongs
12:42to God
12:43not to us.
12:45We are often
12:46troubled
12:46but not crushed
12:47sometimes in doubt
12:49but never in despair.
12:52There are many enemies
12:53but we are never
12:54without a friend
12:55and though badly
12:57hurt at times
12:58we are not destroyed.
13:00At all times
13:01we carry in our
13:02mortal bodies
13:03the death
13:04of Jesus
13:05so that his life
13:07also may be seen
13:08in our bodies.
13:10Throughout our lives
13:11we are always
13:12in danger of death
13:14for Jesus' sake
13:15in order that
13:16his life
13:17may be seen
13:18in this mortal body
13:19of ours.
13:21This means that
13:22death is at work
13:23in us
13:23but life
13:24is at work
13:25in you.
13:26The scripture says
13:28I spoke
13:29because I believed.
13:31In the same
13:31spirit of faith
13:33we also speak
13:34because we believe.
13:36We know that God
13:37who raised the Lord
13:38Jesus to life
13:39will also raise us
13:41up with Jesus
13:42and take us
13:43together with you
13:45into his presence.
13:47All this
13:48is for your sake
13:49and as God's grace
13:51reaches more
13:52and more people
13:52they will offer
13:54to the glory of God
13:55more prayers
13:56of thanksgiving.
13:58Living by faith.
14:00For this reason
14:02we never become
14:03discouraged
14:04even though
14:05our physical being
14:07is gradually
14:07decaying
14:08yet our spiritual
14:10being is renewed
14:11day after day
14:12and this small
14:14and temporary
14:15trouble we suffer
14:16will bring us
14:17a tremendous
14:18and eternal glory
14:19much greater
14:21than the trouble
14:22for we fix
14:23our attention
14:24not on things
14:25that are seen
14:26but on things
14:27that are unseen.
14:28what can be seen
14:30lasts only
14:31for a time
14:32but what cannot
14:33be seen
14:34lasts forever.
14:39Chapter 5
14:40For we know
14:42that when this
14:42tent we live in
14:44our body
14:45here on earth
14:46is torn down
14:47God will have
14:48a house in heaven
14:49for us to live in
14:50a home
14:51he himself
14:52has made
14:53which will last
14:54forever
14:54and now we sigh
14:56so great
14:58is our desire
14:59that our home
15:00which comes
15:01from heaven
15:01should be put
15:02on over us
15:03by being clothed
15:05with it
15:05we shall not
15:06be without a body
15:07while we live
15:09in this earthly
15:10tent
15:10we groan
15:11with a feeling
15:12of oppression
15:13it is not
15:15that we want
15:15to get rid
15:16of our earthly
15:17body
15:17but that we want
15:19to have the
15:19heavenly one
15:20put on over us
15:22so that what
15:23is mortal
15:24will be transformed
15:25by life
15:26God is the one
15:28who has prepared
15:29us for this change
15:31and he gave us
15:32his spirit
15:33as the guarantee
15:34of all that he
15:35has in store
15:36for us
15:37so we are always
15:38full of courage
15:40we know that as long
15:42as we are at home
15:43in the body
15:44we are away
15:45from the Lord's home
15:46for our life
15:47is a matter of faith
15:49not of sight
15:50we are full of courage
15:52and would much prefer
15:54to leave our home
15:55in the body
15:55and be at home
15:57with the Lord
15:57more than anything
15:59else however
16:00we want to please
16:01him
16:02whether in our home
16:03here or there
16:04for all of us
16:06must appear
16:07before Christ
16:07to be judged
16:08by him
16:09we will each receive
16:11what we deserve
16:12according to
16:13everything we have
16:14done
16:14good or bad
16:15in our bodily life
16:17friendship with God
16:19through Christ
16:20we know what it
16:22means to fear
16:23the Lord
16:24and so we try
16:25to persuade others
16:26God knows us
16:28completely
16:29and I hope
16:30that in your hearts
16:31you know me
16:32as well
16:32we are not trying
16:34again to recommend
16:35ourselves to you
16:37rather
16:37we are trying
16:38to give you
16:39a good reason
16:40to be proud
16:41of us
16:41so that you
16:42will be able
16:43to answer those
16:44who boast
16:45about people's
16:46appearance
16:47and not about
16:48their character
16:49are we really
16:50insane
16:51it is for God's
16:53sake
16:53or are we
16:54sane
16:55then it is
16:56for your sake
16:57we are ruled
16:59by the love
16:59of Christ
17:00now that we
17:01recognize that
17:02one man died
17:03for everyone
17:04which means
17:05that they all
17:06share in his
17:07death
17:07he died for

17:09so that those
17:11who live
17:11should no longer
17:12live for themselves

20:05we are not killed

20:13many people rich

23:58such readiness
