00:00More is more.
00:00More is more.
00:01That's how we met.
00:03Ooh, I like that.
00:04That's how we met.
00:14My favorite lady in the whole wide world is Ruth and Carter.
00:18Oh, she's right here.
00:19I didn't even know.
00:20You see how I talk about you behind your back?
00:21You better.
00:22You see how I talk about you behind your back?
00:24Oh, my god.
00:25Oh, my darling.
00:26Oh, hey.
00:28Hey.
00:29Oh, we've been on this journey.
00:30Oh, my god.
00:31We've been on this journey.
00:32See, I did the rap, right?
00:33I know.
00:34You understand who is my collaborator?
00:36Y'all have to understand what's really happening here.
00:39But you guys are really excited.
00:42You know what's crazy, because I don't mean to be this person.
00:44I know she's probably going to get shy, but I get to say,
00:47you know, they was like, oh, you know, who you going with?
00:50Yeah, who you going with?
00:52Who you going with?
00:53I'm like, oh, you know, my girl, Ruthie Carter, you know,
00:56ah, it's the wearer.
00:57You feel me, like.
00:58I'm not.
00:59Twice.
01:00Let's be clear.
01:02When they released the theme, I knew exactly who I needed to reach out to,
01:05because I'm already not a big dress girl.
01:08So I'm in suits, even without it being a suit theme.
01:12I relate to Harlem in so many ways.
01:15I started with Spike Lee, and when I was in high school, we'd come here and get our school
01:19clothes.
01:20It was the best school clothes.
01:21We're in New York.
01:23So having this rose out of the concrete has meaning for me, too.
01:28I'm, like, honored that Tiana called me so long ago.
01:32Like, it was October.
01:33Right.
01:34I didn't even have the job yet.
01:35I didn't have an invite yet.
01:36Yeah.
01:37I was just like...
01:38V.R. Warwick.
01:39Yeah.
01:40And that dress.
01:41And then you were like, yeah, I think I might host Met Gala.
01:44I was like, let's do a zoot suit.
01:46Mm-hmm.
01:47You're really getting down to the history of Dandyism and Dapper Dan and, you know,
01:53people like that.
01:54It's almost like a moment that we were waiting on.
01:57Think about it.
01:58As we embarked on this, you know, journey in this country, we were stripped of everything,
02:03stripped of our culture.
02:04So, you know, a lot of times the only thing you had is to, like, show it on your body.
02:09My favorite detail is how we kind of teetered with not going too far with the roses, but
02:16having just enough for the identity part of the diasporic identity and not changing
02:22the theme to be too whimsical.
02:25It was like a real fine balance.
02:28We had about six fittings.
02:29We had some ones I like to forget.
02:31Right?
02:32The one where we were working out the cape.
02:34We pleated this cape four times.
02:36And even, like, little small details like the holster.
02:38Yeah.
02:39Like, it's crazy, because we were trying to figure out how to make this stick.
02:42Yes.
02:43I was like, ooh, I think we should do a little holster.
02:45And the holster wanted to be in, like, the fire and being touched, and that was the last
02:50thing we did.
02:51Not everybody have the skill of detail.
02:53Sleepless nights.
02:54Exactly.
02:55Yeah, so it was just like, I was resting my little head at night knowing that I was
02:58going to be okay, you know, and trusting the process.
03:01I think that's all it's about.
03:06Today, y'all going to see us finesse, because we got to try and figure out this do that situation.
03:09Yeah.
03:09So I did have an idea.
03:11Okay.
03:11So we don't lose this moment.
03:13Right.
03:13I think the easier thing it's going to do is to already have it set and then stripped
03:18from there.
03:19So what I was thinking is having the do-rag on, but tuck it.
03:21Tuck it in.
03:22Or even I can pin it.
03:24You won't even see the do-rag until.
03:25Yeah, I could put it in like this, so it'll look like the lining.
03:28Exactly.
03:29But you might not even have to pin it, because I think once you tie it, it'll hug my body.
03:33Okay, we'll try that.
03:34But what I'm also thinking is that way, so when I have my little Puss in Boots hat.
03:38Yeah, yeah.
03:39Then she's still on, but then it's just like a bam, bam.
03:42Yeah.
03:42I did the spats too.
03:44So before you put the shoes on, you had to put this up your leg like a sock and then
03:49put the shoe on and then we'll do that.
03:52This is the vest and we made it so that we're zipping it closed on the side.
03:59There's a vintage Uremen in here too, right?
04:01Yeah, it's on the cape.
04:02Oh, she gave me one ring that I took off so fast.
04:04She told me that price.
04:05I said, yeah, I'm gonna take that over.
04:07This is the Uremen chains.
04:08This is another Uremen chain, nice, long, heavy one.
04:12I keep decking you in the chin.
04:15This is like a do-rag on steroids.
04:18Always been a cape on my do-rag kind of girl.
04:21For me, I think it's just iconic, you know?
04:24I feel like why not put that little-
04:26Little touch in there.
04:31It's cute with the chevrons though.
04:33It's cute.
04:35You don't want to narrow down there, do you?
04:37I feel like-
04:38It gets a little too fluffy.
04:39Right, yeah, it's too fluffy.
04:41Okay, so I'll narrow it.
04:42I just think if you take-
04:43You see that line right there?
04:44Yep.
04:45You can really just tap that.
04:46Half of that.
04:47That middle panel?
04:48Yep.
04:49Take these two off.
04:50Okay, got you.
04:51Just one.
04:52This now is giving like-
04:53Given to that.
04:55Almost there.
04:57I love it.
04:58Love it.
04:59Love it.
05:00Love it.
05:01Love it.
05:04Yes.
05:07All right, I'll pull the cape up as we go around.
05:10There we go.
05:11I'm sorry, I'm too indulged in my outfit.
05:21What'd you say?
05:22Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun.
05:24So this is the part where I tell everybody,
05:26Hey, what y'all think?
05:27The do-rag or no?
05:28I think the do-rag is giving.
05:37Ooh, ma, you missed the do-rag, but it's cold.
05:40I'm on my way.
05:41Girl, we stuck in traffic.
05:42That means your time management sucks.
05:45Traffic or not.
05:47Never.
05:48Never.
05:49Never.
05:50Never.
05:51You showed me a new Saudi today.
05:52Let me see.
05:53Let me see that back.
05:55Ooh.
05:56All right.
05:57Let me get my shoulders through.
05:58Your phone is not.
05:59Your phone's not.
06:00Right.
06:01You got to like shimmy them shoulders through.
06:04Well, we're going to go darker with the shoe.
06:05Marc Jacobs.
06:06Uh-huh.
06:07Oh, knock up so Marc is doing them good.
06:10Spirit fingers.
06:13But should the ankle be a little tighter, you think?
06:15You mean,
06:16because then we're going to get into a genie pant.
06:18That's the real Zuzu shape.
06:20It's wide at the knee.
06:21You probably was getting mixed up with the red.
06:22Once the red is out.
06:23Yeah.
06:24Whiskey stick was definitely our idea.
06:26You don't want to be drunk on a job, you know?
06:28But however, if I wasn't,
06:30this would have definitely had some liquor in it.
06:33I ain't going front, Davon.
06:34You make sure you bring a boom box.
06:36You okay?
06:37Uh-huh.
06:38So then I'm walking on that carpet.
06:40Do-do-do.
06:41Do-do-do.
06:42Do-do-do.
06:43Wow.
06:44Do-do-do-do.
06:45Mm-hmm.
06:46Give me some Curtis Blow.
06:48I definitely think the do-rag was the finish.
06:53The do-rag and the,
06:55and the holster,
06:56the leather holster,
06:57Yeah.
06:58Insane.
06:59That's what really brought a true like rose in Harlem.
07:01Yeah.
07:02I could be on a Met Gala still with my do-rag on.
07:04Yes.
07:05She might not need it.
07:06Might not need it.
07:07But we covered it.
07:08Mm-hmm.
07:09We bought us a little bamboo handle.
07:11Tiana said she wanted a mirror inside,
07:14so we put the mirror in there.
07:19It was good to see it all come together in the final fitting.
07:22Two detailed people coming together is a literal movie.
07:26It's iconic as she is that even icons get in their heads and-
07:30Mm-hmm.
07:31And are overthinking as well.
07:32But overthinking is over caring, you know,
07:34which is a great thing.
07:35And so I think seeing that process and seeing her still care about it so much,
07:38when you get to really walk around with like several Oscars and still like,
07:42I don't think that worked out.
07:44And I'm like, roof, girl.
07:45It was fine.
07:46It's fine.
07:47I don't even know what you're talking about, you know?
07:48So it's really dope because it's like, of course,
07:51I'm working my way up to be an icon one day.
07:53But it's just like, where I am,
07:55I'm still very passionate about what I do.
07:58So to see others still passionate about what they do just shows that you're
08:02always leaning toward being a better version of yourself.
08:05It's a big night in like, for culture.
08:10It's black this year.
08:14You hear me from head to toe.
08:16Yes.
08:17I love it.
08:18I mean, I get to have my little, my little pimp walk.
08:22You know, like, it's just, I get to sit in this moment.
08:26Yes.
08:27What?
08:28Absorb it.
08:29Exactly.
08:30I'm so excited to see Dapper Dan.
08:32Like, you don't even understand how much he deserve his flowers.
08:34You know, it's important for so many reasons, especially for New Yorkers.
08:41Especially, especially.
08:42Oh, I'm not just saying that because I'm from Longo.
08:45It's been real.
08:52We did it, Ru.
08:54We did it.
08:55We did it all.
08:56We did it, Ru.
08:57We did it.
08:58It's a journey.
08:59All I need to do right now is be in the park calling you on the phone.
09:01We did it, Ru.
09:03And I love it.
09:05We did it.
09:07Yeah, I'm going to shed a tear.
09:08I know I'm going to shed a tear.
09:09Yes.
09:10Yeah.
09:11Because you so deserve it.
09:14Mm-hmm.
09:15Uh-huh.
09:16Yep.
09:17Yep.
09:18See?
09:19See you at the Met.
09:20We'll see y'all at the Met.
09:22We'll see you later.
09:35Bye-bye.
09:38Bye-bye.
09:40Bye-bye.
09:42Bye-bye.
09:46Bye.
09:47Bye.
09:48Bye-bye.
09:50Bye-bye.
09:51Bye.
