00:00All the distinguished guests tonight, let me say I am profoundly humbled by this recognition
00:06and deeply honored by your presence here tonight.
00:13You know, one of the earliest memories I have as a boy in a small town in southern Indiana
00:17was sitting on the floor of our living room,
00:20on the carpet, watching our black and white television.
00:25As the caisson and the clip-clop of the horses sounded,
00:34carried the body of our fallen president to Arlington National Cemetery.
00:40I remember it to this day.
00:44Above that television hung a picture of the Pope and of John F. Kennedy.
00:50It was President Kennedy's eloquence and example that first inspired me to believe
00:58that public service was a noble calling.
01:02So to be here tonight, bearing witness to a journey
01:07that President Kennedy helped inspire in my small life,
01:12is more meaningful than I can possibly express.
01:15It was a great honor to serve as your Vice President
01:27through all the history that we made.
01:31But the truth is, I feel profoundly unworthy
01:33to be associated with this award
01:36or the Americans enshrined in President Kennedy's storied book.
01:39When I think of that fateful day four years ago,
01:46the only heroes I saw were wearing uniforms.
01:58And while I cannot see myself among those noteworthy Americans
02:02in the President's book,
02:03I will say that the words of John Quincy Adams
02:07spoke to my heart.
02:10On page 30.
02:14Where he wrote in his diary that he had prayed,
02:17in his words,
02:19that the spirit from whom every good and perfect gift
02:22might enable him to essential,
02:25to render an essential service to the country
02:27and to never be governed in his public conduct.
02:31by any consideration other than duty.
02:39I will always believe,
02:42by God's grace,
02:44I did my duty that day
02:46to support the peaceful transfer of power
02:50under the Constitution of the United States of America.
02:54The Bible says he keeps his oath
03:23even when it hurts.
03:26I know something about that.
03:29So in accepting this award,
03:31I hope you permit me to give honor and glory
03:34to the one who gave me grace and strength
03:36to see that day through.
03:39My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
03:41he wants to thank you.
03:45Thank you,
