Sitting next to President Donald Trump, Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney got the clip he wanted Canadians to see: him telling Trump that Canada is “not for sale.” But over the course of the 33-minute exchange in front of reporters in the freshly gilded Oval Office, Carney had to wait patiently as Trump repeatedly made lengthy pitches for why Canada should be the US’s 51st state.

00:00You have said that Canada should become the 51st state.
00:03No, no. Well, I still believe that, but, you know, it takes two to tango, right?
00:09But, no, I do. I mean, I believe it would be a massive tax cut for the Canadian citizens.
00:16You get free military, you get tremendous medical cares and other things.
00:21There would be a lot of advantages, but it would be a massive tax cut.
00:26And it's also a beautiful, you know, as a real estate developer, you know, I'm a real estate developer at heart.
00:33When you get rid of that artificially drawn line, somebody drew that line many years ago with like a ruler,
00:37just a straight line right across the top of the country.
00:40When you look at that beautiful formation when it's together, I'm a very artistic person.
00:47But when I looked at that beauty, I said that's the way it was meant to be.
00:50But, you know, I guess I do feel it's much better for Canada.
00:55But we're not going to be discussing that unless somebody wants to discuss it.
01:00I think that there are tremendous benefits to the Canadian citizens, tremendously lower taxes, free military,
01:07which honestly we give you essentially anyway because we're protecting Canada if you have had a problem.
01:12But I think, you know, it would really be a wonderful marriage because it's two places they get along very well.
01:20They like each other a lot.
01:22Well, if I may, as you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale.
01:29That's true.
01:30We're sitting in one right now, you know, Buckingham Palace that you visited as well.
01:34That's true.
01:34And having met with the owners of Canada over the course of the campaign last several months, it's not for sale, won't be for sale ever.
01:44But the opportunity is in the partnership and what we can build together.
01:49We have done that in the past.
01:50And part of that, as the President just said, is with respect to our own security.
01:57They have, I must say, Canada is stepping up the military participation because Mark knew, you know, they were low and now they're stepping it up.
02:07And that's a very important thing.
02:09But never say never.
02:10Never say never.
02:11When you consider what Mr. Carney just said, that Canada is not for sale, does this make the discussion a little more difficult to start on?
02:22No, not at all.
02:23No, not at all.
02:24No, time.
02:25Time will tell.
02:26It's only time.
02:27But I say, never say never.
02:30I've had many, many things that were not doable and they ended up being doable.
02:34And only doable in a very friendly way.
02:36But if it's to everybody's benefit, you know, Canada loves us and we love Canada.
02:42That's, I think, the number one thing that's important.
02:45But we'll see.
02:46I mean, over time, we'll see what happens.
