This news report details a significant escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan following a militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir. Here's a breakdown of the key points:
* **India's Action:** India claims to have launched "Operation Sindoor," targeting nine sites described as "terrorist infrastructure" in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. They emphasize the targets were related to planning attacks against India and that no Pakistani military facilities were hit. India states this was a response to the recent deadly attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir.
* **Pakistan's Response:** Pakistan confirms missile strikes in three areas: Muzaffarabad and Kotli in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and Bahawalpur in Pakistan. They condemn the attack as "shameful and cowardly," state it was carried out from within India's airspace, and vow to respond at a time and place of their choosing. They also report their air force jets are airborne.
* **Context:** The report highlights the sharp deterioration in India-Pakistan relations since the militant attack on Hindu tourists last month.
* **Impact:** Explosions and power cuts (specifically in Muzaffarabad) have been reported in the targeted areas.
* **Reporting:** The report is presented by Fiona Bruce for BBC News at Ten, with reporting from Jeremy Bowen and Samira Hussain.
Overall, the report paints a picture of a dangerous moment in the relationship between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, with India taking military action and Pakistan threatening retaliation. The situation is clearly volatile and could potentially escalate further.

00:00We start tonight with a breaking story that India has launched an attack on Pakistan and Pakistan
00:04administered Kashmir and Jammu. Relations between India and Pakistan, two nuclear powers, have long
00:11been tense but deteriorated sharply following a deadly militant attack on tourists in Kashmir
00:17last month. Pakistan is vowing to retaliate at a time and place of its choosing. It looks like that
00:22may be underway. Our international editor Jeremy Bowen is here. And Jeremy, this news has just
00:26come in. So what more can you tell us? Well, there are a few things to think about here
00:31tonight. First of all, the question is whether India will decide that their honour has been
00:37satisfied after that attack. Now, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. This at the moment
00:43is a response to an attack which India is blaming on Pakistan, on militant groups that are based
00:51there. And they have hit nine places with various kinds of missiles that they've got. And they
01:01have been hinting that something like this will happen. It's been on the card. So let's hope that
01:08internationally people are ready to try and calm the situation down to make sure it doesn't go any
01:14further than it needs to get. Because India and Pakistan have a long history of tension between
01:22them. And over the disputed area of Kashmir, which has been disputed since the partition of India just
01:31after the Second World War. Well, as you say, Jeremy, this has been on the cards for some time. Relations
01:36have been extremely tense between the two countries for a number of years. Yeah, they have been tense. And so that's why
01:42this is something that we've got to be concerned about. But also, I think, the first of all, both
01:47sides will know what the stakes are here. So, as I say, really important for everybody looking at
01:54this, people who might be worried about it, people who might have family out there, people who are
01:59concerned about what may happen, and journalists must not get ahead of themselves at the moment about
02:05this. Now, obviously, it's breaking news in the world. But it's something that now there has to be
02:11a major diplomatic push to stop it escalating, to calm things down for both sides to say, right,
02:20honour has been satisfied. Now, we can draw a line. Jeremy, thank you very much. Well, we can now go
02:26live to Samir Hussain reporting from India for us. Samir, what can you tell us? Well, look, so far,
02:33the only details that we're getting here in India are actually from the Indian government and not the
02:40army. And what they're saying is that they have hit nine targets in Pakistan. They're saying that
02:46these targets were, in fact, militant targets. They are saying that they did not target the Pakistan
02:53military. And they're saying that right now, actually, you're seeing some, we're getting some reports of
02:59artillery shelling happening between the two countries at some points along the line of control.
03:06And now, really, what's going to happen is everyone's looking towards Pakistan in terms of
03:11what kind of retaliation we may see. Now, remember, it's been 12 days since that attack that happened
03:18targeting all these tourists. And many people have been wondering about what was going to happen
03:25between India and Pakistan. Remember, along this line of control, there has been quite a few,
03:31quite a long ceasefire. That has clearly been breached. And so now there's a real concern
03:38in terms of what Pakistan's response may be to what's just happened.
