Scientific learning at home is a great way to use experimentation to fuel the mind and ignite curiosity, creative problem-solving and enthusiasm for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) among young students. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda is partnering with Odyssey of the Mind, a creative problem-solving competition for kids for the 6th consecutive year, continuing their support of the program's goals aimed at encouraging students to see the world around them in new ways and to make the ordinary into something extraordinary. The partnership also extends to Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Rocket Day 2025 later this year. Emily Calandrelli (Emily the Space Gal), the 100th woman to go to space joins us at LifeMinute with the latest on both and how to get involved. Check out armandhammer.com/baking-soda and odysseyofthemind.com for more info.

00:00Hi, I'm Emily Calandrelli, known as the Space Gal Online. I'm an MIT aerospace engineer turned
00:11science educator with educational TV shows and books. And with everything that I do,
00:17my mission is to make science feel more accessible to more people, to help inspire the next
00:23generation of scientists and engineers, which is why I'm so proud to partner with Arm & Hammer
00:28Baking Soda again, because this is the sixth consecutive year that they've partnered with
00:33Odyssey of the Mind. Now, Odyssey of the Mind is this incredible organization that promotes the
00:39STEAM, science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics-based competitions to students
00:46worldwide. It's so creative. It's like a mix of theater with problem-solving, art with science.
00:54It's these kids that are learning presenting skills, problem-solving skills, teamwork skills,
00:59and they are learning confidence in themselves when it comes to science and engineering. It's just
01:05such an incredible organization. And the world finals is coming up at Michigan State University
01:11this year. And because baking soda is in some of my favorite science experiments, it makes sense
01:15that they are partnering with Odyssey of the Mind again this year. Now, one of my favorite
01:20recommendations to families if they want to inspire science confidence in their own kids is with at-home
01:27science experiments. I have two books, my Stay Curious and Keep Exploring book series that have
01:32a hundred ideas for different science activities. My favorite ones in the book include baking soda,
01:39because it is just such an accessible material. And you can make baking soda rockets. You can make
01:44paint can rockets. And if you have really little kids, you could simply combine baking soda with food
01:50coloring and vinegar and make rainbow bubbles. It's such a tactile way to inspire science confidence
01:58in their own kids to help them start thinking of themselves as a scientist. And coming up on October
02:049th, we are having our second annual baking soda rocket day. We did this last year. It was so much fun.
02:11It was quite literally a blast. And we're going to do it again this year, launching thousands of baking
02:16soda rockets at schools across the nation. And if you want to learn more about all of this,
02:22you can go to armandhammer.com slash baking dash soda and odysseyofthemind.com.
