00:00Cases of anti-Semitism have risen dramatically in Germany as Europe marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
00:08The Anti-Defamation League published a report highlighting a surge of violent anti-Semitic incidents
00:14across the seven countries of the largest Jewish communities outside of Israel.
00:19ADL's Marina Rosenberg says Jews are hiding their identities and symbols.
00:23Post-October 7th, the numbers of anti-Semitic incidents have skyrocketed in all our countries.
00:30And this started on the day of October 7th.
00:34So it wasn't just something that happened when the war in Gaza began, when Israel took measures against Hamas.
00:43And it started with demonstrations, it continued with harassment and vandalism.
00:49And we're seeing today also really violent attacks against Jews around the world.
00:57In Germany, anti-Semitic incidents increased 75% from 2021 to 2023, 185% in France and 82% in the UK.
01:08The report states that across the seven countries, known as the J7,
01:12attacks on Jewish schools, synagogues and businesses alongside individuals have increased significantly
01:17and in some cases have more than doubled.
01:21The threat of anti-Semitism is not just against Jews, it's against all of society.
01:27And it really goes against any democratic value that our liberal societies believe in.
01:33We've always said that the anti-Semitism is the canary in the coal mine.
01:38And what starts with the Jews never ends with the Jews.
01:41And we know this here in Germany, and we know it in Europe, and we know it around the world.
01:46For some of the countries, the anti-Semitic attacks have been more intense
01:50over the past 18 months than the past 18 years.
01:53The J7 countries urged anti-Semitism to be tackled through education
01:57as they warned that other minority groups could be targeted next.
02:01We've been seeing a normalization of anti-Semitism in our societies across the political spectrum.
02:08So it's not only an issue of far right or far left or from Islamists or jihadists,
02:14it's all over our societies.
02:16And therefore what is required, not just here in Germany, but around the world,
02:20is a whole-of-society approach.
