00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Wednesday afternoon.
00:34All eyes on another 15 rounds of letters and numbers
00:38on British television's longest-running TV game show.
00:42Hello, Rachel Riley.
00:43Hello, Colin Murray.
00:44I did a Google search this morning
00:47that I immediately deleted from my search history,
00:51which was, what colour of eyes does Rachel Riley have?
00:55OK.
00:56Don't get creeped out.
00:57Today is different coloured eyes day.
01:00So, according to somebody who writes down celebrities' eye colours,
01:04which is strange to start with, but dull green.
01:09Dull green?
01:09Dull green is your official eye colour.
01:12They're not green at all.
01:14That's what people out there think it is.
01:16Oh, well, I mean, I like it when they put your date of birth
01:18and then they have an estimate of your age.
01:20Yeah.
01:20It's like, come on, guys, come on, you can work it out.
01:23All right, let's cast our gaze over the Dixonry corner.
01:26Always a sight for sore eyes.
01:29Susie Dent with us as always.
01:31And some would say, more of an eyesore, but that would be cruel.
01:34I wouldn't say that.
01:35No, I am a sight for sore eyes,
01:37but that was when Sean Connery said it.
01:38OK, get the gag.
01:42It's brilliant.
01:42Let's move on.
01:43Roy Bremner.
01:47Let's welcome back David Edwards, our champion.
01:51Now, you're in the middle of a big ambition.
01:55You're trying to visit all 50 states in the United States.
01:58Why the Americana fascination?
02:01I just think that each corner of the states
02:04has its own separate identity, I suppose.
02:08You've got the Deep South, you've got California,
02:11and they all have their own sort of different outlooks, I suppose.
02:16What is your favourite place so far, your favourite state?
02:20I have to say Las Vegas, Nevada.
02:23Nevada.
02:23Yeah, it's something else.
02:25It's the sort of place that everybody has to visit just the once.
02:28Well, the only place you're allowed to be now
02:30is right here in Salford.
02:31With four more wins, you'll be an octochamp.
02:33Amy Jones hopes that you can go wherever you want after this show.
02:37Amy Jones from County Durham.
02:39Huge countdown fan from when you were a babby.
02:41Nice to have you here.
02:42Thank you very much.
02:43Used to be in a girl band.
02:45Yes.
02:45Tell us all about, what were they called?
02:46The names will all, are always, band names are all terrible.
02:49Girls Aloud, Spice Girls, what was it?
02:51Absolutely terrible.
02:52It was, wow.
02:54How many exclamation marks?
02:56Three, obviously.
02:58You knew it wasn't going to be one.
03:00Oh, I can't believe you made me say that.
03:01You love a bit of karaoke, me too.
03:03Yes.
03:03Like a bit of karaoke.
03:04Can't get us off on a Friday night.
03:06What's your tune?
03:07Simply the best, Tina Turner.
03:09Nice.
03:10It can't be, it has to be a cheese fest when you go out of the karaoke, doesn't it?
03:14Good luck to both of you, Amy and David.

04:42I'd expect nothing else.
04:43Well done.
04:44Dictionary corner, a couple of pasties.
04:46A very common word on Countdown, but it's always worth looking for a pastie when the letters come out.
04:51Anything else?
04:52Er, yeah, we've got a couple of eights.
04:54Er, just jiggling around as escapist was there.
04:58Ah, brilliant.
04:59Yep.
04:59And spaciest.
05:01Spaciest.
05:01Yeah, I like that one.
05:03Right, let's get your first choice of letters, nine, from Amy Jones.

06:19Amy? Eight. David? The seven. The seven is? Loiters. Loiters, what's the eight? It's lordiest. Can you be more lordy than somebody else? It's a brilliant effort. It's lordliest. You need that second L. I'm so sorry. But yeah, got a fantastic try, both of you. Anything else in Dictionary Corner? Yeah, so we got an eight with tendrils. Beautiful. Yes, that was nice.
06:48Retinol for seven, otherwise. OK, numbers. First time today. David? Too large, please. Too large for little. Back to one of your forties, the numbers. And the first one of the day is six, ten, eight, five. And the large two, 50 and 75. And the target, very small, 103.

08:07Rachel?
08:08Well, there were a few ways.
08:10One of them.
08:1110 minus 6 is 4.
08:1375 minus 50 is 25.
08:16Times them together for 100.
08:19And then 8 less 5 gives you 3.
08:21It didn't just fall out, so...
08:23Slight chance.
08:24APPLAUSE
08:26Difficult enough, Rach, difficult enough.
08:29Now, I love this tea-time teaser clue.
08:31It's not profit, not profit.

11:46The deliberate pasando,
11:47it's time to look for people's policies.
11:48Quite rald, but I can all imperfect.
11:49Really?

12:02This is a long walk.
12:03MUSIC
12:07That's time, David. Six.
12:10And Amy? Six. The sixes? Market.
12:13Jammer. Jammer.
12:15Jammer and market to Dictionary Corner.
12:18Yeah, well, another six. Marmot.
12:21Funny animal, you either like it or you hate it.
12:24LAUGHTER
12:26Thank you very much. Thank you.
12:29I'm sorry. It's late in the week.
12:32That was the best we could do, actually.
12:35Marmot, very good indeed. Points shared in that round.
12:38And, Amy, you're in control of the numbers.
12:40Three large, please. Lovely.
12:42Three from the top and three not.
12:44Hopefully some points hidden in this round.
12:47The numbers. Eight, ten, seven, fifty, seventy-five and one hundred.
12:53And the target for you? 408.
12:56408. Numbers up.

13:23408, the target for Amy and David. Amy?
13:31407. One away, David?
13:34407. 407 as well. Amy, off you go.
13:378 times 50 is 400, add 7.
13:41Yep, one away, 407.
13:43Yeah, and David? Same.
13:44Same way. See, what way Rachel went for this? Did you use all the numbers?
13:49No, I didn't, but the trick would be to leave the eight till the last
13:53and add it on. So we're looking for 400 and you could say 50 times 10
13:57is 500 and then take away the 100.
14:01Wow. Very good.
14:04We need a break from the game to recover from that,
14:07so let's head over to Dictionary Corner.
14:09We've had a fond tribute to a good friend,
14:11we've talked about your burgeoning acting career,
14:14we've talked about animals. Where are we going today?
14:16Right, well, you always wonder what it would be like
14:18to be recruited as a spy.
14:20Well, I had the next best thing.
14:21I was recruited to do a spying podcast,
14:23which we started during lockdown.
14:25It's called The Spying Game, and the idea,
14:26we've got real-life spies, and we've put them together,
14:29or retired spies, because obviously, if they said,
14:31yes, I'm a spy, that's the cover blown.
14:33But former spies, but put them together
14:35with people who write about spying,
14:36so either authors or screenwriters like Jed Mercurio, for example,
14:39we've got him, he wrote The Bodyguard,
14:41so we've put them together with the real bodyguard,
14:43and that was fascinating.
14:44She'd lived through 9-11,
14:46she'd looked after presidents and heads of state.
14:49My favourite, though, was Johnna Mendez.
14:51Now, Johnna Mendez, she was head of disguise at the CIA.
14:54Wasn't that a great job title?
14:56Married to Tony Mendez,
14:58who was the inspiration for Argo,
15:01do you remember that film,
15:01the man getting the hostages out of Iran?
15:03But he was also a master of disguise.
15:05They worked with Hollywood prosthetic people
15:07from Planet of the Apes.
15:09Tony's greatest challenge,
15:10he had to transform himself in 45 seconds,
15:12walking down a dimly corridor.
15:14He was carrying a briefcase
15:15with a bowler hat and a men's coat.
15:18In 45 paces, he turned the coat round
15:20to make a pink coat
15:21with hair already down the back of it,
15:23took his hat off, shook his hair down,
15:26rolled up his trousers and legs,
15:27he was wearing stockings underneath,
15:28took the tops off his shoes,
15:30that became the bosom,
15:31and he pressed a button on his briefcase,
15:34it became a shopping trolley
15:35with an inflatable baguette.
15:37So there's wonderful stories like that.
15:39We've done about 15,
15:40and I hope we'll be doing more.
15:41It's called The Spying Game
15:42and it's on a podcast server near you.
15:45Sensational, thank you.
15:49Right, 42 players, 20.

17:13Bowed.
17:15It's not there, I'm afraid.
17:16I did check that because we have bow as well, but, yeah, not in the dictionary.
17:20Sorry.
17:21And six was a decent shot, actually, by the way.
17:23It really was good to get a six out of that because we were pretty much stuck on fives otherwise.
17:28I was stuck on three.
17:29Amy, let's get more letters.

24:52Right.
24:53Susie, Origins of Words.
24:55Take us on another journey today.
24:57Yeah, well, I'm going to sort of slip into spy mode, really,
25:01or stay in spy mode,
25:03because we had a question come in from Sue Doughty from Twyford in Berkshire.
25:08And she's talking about disguise and guise and those words.
25:13Why do they have such different meanings?
25:15Or do they, she says.
25:17So you might think that guise and disguise would be opposites of each other.
25:22But in fact, we use them both really, don't we, to mean an external appearance that is usually designed to conceal something else.
25:29Certainly that's the case with disguise.
25:31And it's the same with the guise as well, that you're sort of affecting something that isn't authentic, is the idea.
25:39And the dis here is not a negative.
25:43The disguise actually means that when you put on your guise, you disguise it by changing it.
25:50So it's all about changing, if you imagine changing your clothes, not about saying, here I am, this is me.
25:56So the dis is not working in that way, as we might expect it.
26:00But one of the things I love about guise, and that you might not guess, is that a guiser, G-U-I-S-E-R, was an actor,
26:08but particularly an actor that was a mummer in a traditional folk play.
26:12Now, a mummer is somebody who originally, thanks to the noise, mummer were actually miming.
26:19So they were actually sort of being largely silent and kept their mouths shut.
26:23So there were mummers in the folk play.
26:26And just like Guy slipped from being Guy Fawkes and an effigy of Guy Fawkes into a generic sense,
26:32a generic term for a man, so a guiser changed its spelling into G-E-E-Z-E-R
26:39and became a generic term for any bloke that you might find on the street,
26:43and definitely not one that's in disguise.
26:45Great.
26:45APPLAUSE
26:46Nine points in it.
26:51Four rounds to go.
26:53Two letters, one number's in a conundrum.
26:55Amy, let's go.
26:57Constance, please.
26:58Thank you, Amy.

28:13Seven.
28:13And the seven.
28:14What's the words?
28:15Gropia.
28:16Gropia.
28:17Parola.
28:19Gropia and parola.
28:21OK, so, gropia is not in, unfortunately.
28:25A wine can be grapia, but you can't be gropia, thankfully, I suppose.
28:30And there's no parola either.
28:32Wow.
28:33It'll be a parolee, but the person who gives parole is not a parola.
28:38Sorry about that.
28:39No points.
28:40Nile poire.
28:40What do we have there, Rory?
28:42Er, we...
28:43Pergola was what we had, but, um...
28:46Pergola's lovely, yeah.
28:47That's F7.
28:48That's the lovely structure in your garden with...
28:50Yeah.
28:51Sort of all metal flowers and things.
28:52Yeah.
28:53No worries.
28:53Right, nine points in it.
28:56David, let's do it.
28:58Phew.
28:58Um, have a consonant, please.
29:00Thank you, David.
29:01V.
29:03And another.
29:05T.

29:33And lastly, G.
29:35Last letters.
29:35R.
29:44Well,
29:45I'm saying,
29:46I.
29:49I.
29:49I.
29:50I.
29:50I.
29:50I.
29:51I.
29:52I.
29:53I.
29:54I.
29:55I.
29:56I.
29:57I.
29:58I.
29:58I.
29:58Time's up, David.
30:08Seven.
30:09And Amy? Seven.
30:11What have you got? Stage year.
30:13Stage year. And Amy?
30:15Gravest. Gravest and stage year?
30:18Yep, that's absolutely fine.
30:19What's stage year mean?
30:21If you're stagey, you're very theatrical.
30:23Yeah. A bit exaggerated.
30:25Two rounds to go. This is really interesting
30:27because we're in crucial countdown conundrum territory,
30:30but Amy's in charge of the last numbers round.
30:32So is she going to take a risk or is she going to play it safe?
30:35Let's find out.
30:35I think it's all a bit of a risk at the moment, Colin.
30:38I think I'll go for three large again.
30:41Three large.
30:42Three from the top row.
30:43Three not, and we're all hoping for a crucial conundrum.
30:46Except David.
30:47Right, the final numbers.
30:49Four, ten, five, one hundred, fifty and twenty-five.
30:56And the last target, 813.
31:00813. Numbers up.
31:01One, two, five, three, four, five.
31:06Really difficult target.
31:33813, Amy.
31:35820.
31:367 away.
31:38Big chance for David.
31:39812.
31:401 away.
31:41This will be it.
31:42Take your fifth win.
31:43Right.
31:44100 minus 10.
31:46100 minus 10, 90.
31:49Then 5 plus 4.
31:51Is 9.
31:52Multiply together.
31:53810.
31:54And then 50 divided by 25.
31:56And you've only gone and done it.
31:58Yes.
31:591 away.
32:00812.
32:01What a scrap.
32:02Well done, Dee Dee.
32:03This win.
32:04Had to work for that.
32:05Were there 10 points going to beg in there?
32:07There were not.
32:08No.
32:091 away was the best you could have done.
32:10Brilliant under pressure.
32:11Very good indeed.
32:12What a battle.
32:13But let's fight right until the end.
32:16Amy Jones from County Durham.
32:19Finger on that buzzer.
32:20David, 10 more points to seal your fifth win.
32:25Let's reveal today's not quite crucial countdown conundrum.
32:28Back down conundrum.
32:29.
32:30.
32:31.
32:35.
32:36.
32:37.
32:38.
32:39.
32:40.
32:41.
32:42.
32:43.
32:44.
32:45.
32:46.
32:47.
32:48.
32:49.
32:50.
32:51.
32:52.
32:53.
32:54Time is up.
32:55No points for David or Amy.
32:56If that had been a crucial, David still would have won despite the numbers.
33:05Given that it's Rachel's pie, I must ask you, Riley, what it is?
33:09It's spherical.
33:10Let's reveal it.
33:11.
33:12.
33:13.
33:14.
33:15.
33:16.
33:17.
33:18.
33:19.
33:20.
33:21I think you've enjoyed it, I mean we could've had Amy for 8 shows.
33:23You made us laugh all day on and off camera.
33:25So, I hope you've enjoyed your day.
33:26.
33:28It's been fab.
33:29I've.
33:30I was never here for a long time, only for a good time.
33:31Yes!
33:32Good, good philosophy, good philosophy.
33:33David is here for both.
33:355 wins, mate 3 more.
33:36.
33:37.
33:39.
33:40That was a real struggle today but you triumph.
33:42.
33:43.
33:44, well done to you, met.
33:45Well done to you.
33:46Arguably your best win at so far.
33:47Forget the totals.
33:48You really had the battle for that.
33:49.
33:50Yes, indeed. Can we hang on?
33:52Yeah, we shall. He's staggering, isn't he? He's staggering.
33:55Right, Susie, see you tomorrow?
33:56Yeah, I'll be here.
33:57Rachel, eye colours. Little quiz for you to finish.
34:00Most popular eye colour in the world.
34:02It's obviously between two.
34:04It's got to be brown, surely.
34:05It is brown. 45%. Second.
34:08Blue.
34:09Yes, 27%. Here's the difficult one.
34:12Third. Most popular eye colour in the world.
34:15And actually, you know, just a few percent behind blue.
34:18Green.
34:19Green's 9%.
34:20OK, well, where's dull green?
34:22There you go.
34:22Dull green is just you.
34:24You're the only person in the world that says it in the official thing.
34:27We'll be looking each other up.
34:28Same time, same place tomorrow.
