00:00There's Keith Mullings, who headlines the main event coming up next.
00:04Mullings defending his 154-pound title, seized from Terry Norris,
00:08against Italian fighter Davide Cirlante.
00:11And you can see that Keith is going to work, warming up for that bout.
00:16Meanwhile, joining us live now at our announced platform
00:20is the man who was originally scheduled to headline this card tonight,
00:23Oscar Della Oya, presently sidelined, and as you can see here,
00:27no cast. Oh, there it is. All right.
00:30Yeah, there's the cast, looking at the wrong hand for the moment.
00:33And you tell me that that hand has actually been hurting you for four years?
00:38I had this injury about four years ago, and the pain was there in every single fight,
00:44but as us fighters don't want to kind of agree and kind of tell people that we're hurting,
00:51even though we are in pain, we just don't want to let nobody know.
00:54I was in pain for about four years, but now I'm doing therapy on it.
00:59I finally put it in a cast, and I think it's going to be a plus for me after I remove it.
01:06Oscar, you've been devastating people with your jab and your left hook for low these four years,
01:11and now you're telling me that it was compromised by injury the whole time.
01:15Somebody's in trouble if you get any better with the left hand.
01:17I've been sometimes hesitating on throwing my jab or my left hook,
01:21and now that I know that I will not have any pain whatsoever in my left hand,
01:26it's going to be even better for me.
01:29It's going to make it hopefully even easier for me to fight these tough guys out there.
01:33After five title fights last year,
01:35a lot of people suspected that maybe you would want a little bit lighter schedule in 1998.
01:40Do you see this injured hand and the layoff it's created as possibly a blessing in disguise?
01:46I think so, because five fights last year I think was a little too much for me,
01:52for my body physically.
01:53Even though I was only training about 60, 70 rounds for a fight, I was tired.
01:59Being in the gym for about 10 months up in the mountains every single day,
02:04it was a wear and tear for the body.
02:06So I think it was a blessing in disguise.
02:08There are a lot of fighters waiting to see how long you're going to stay at 147 pounds
02:13and when you're going to move your business up to 154.
02:16It affects virtually everybody in both of those weight classes.
02:19Do you have a clear picture in your head,
02:21assuming that you can successfully defend the title against Chapantier in June at 147?
02:26How much longer you'll be staying in the welterweight class?
02:28I feel that whoever wants to fight me at this point will have to fight me at 147.
02:35I would have maybe about four or five fights left at this weight.
02:39Then I'll go up to 154 and challenge the champion there.
02:42All right.
02:43So four or five more fights at 147, which leaves plenty of time to make matches with the names that constantly come up.
02:50Trinidad, Cuarte, Jose Luis Lopez, etc.
02:53I really feel that the big, exciting fights are going to happen at 154.
02:59I do feel very comfortable at 147.
03:01I feel strong.
03:02I feel fast.
03:03But every time I go into the gym to train for a fight,
03:06every time I start my training camp, I'm at 155, 156.
03:10I feel very, very strong with good speed.
03:13So I feel that maybe the beginning of next year you will be seeing those big, exciting fights that people want to watch.
03:20Title defense now scheduled for June 13.
03:22When are you back in the gym?
03:24I will be back in three weeks.
03:26I'm going to take about maybe two months for this fight just to start all over again,
03:29get the rhythm back, and just get ready for this guy because this French guy is definitely a tough guy.
03:35All right.
03:36Well, thanks very much for your time.
03:37We'll look forward to maybe having you around or so for the next fight.
03:40Oscar De La Hoya, we'll look forward to seeing him down the road.
03:43And in the meantime, we get ready now for Keith Mullins,
03:45depending his 154-pound title against Italian Davide Cialante.
03:51Let's quickly take a look at a graphic establishing the championship landscape at 154 pounds.
03:56You can see Mullins is a title holder despite that relatively modest 15-4-1 record.
04:02You saw what he did against Norris.
04:03The record doesn't mean all that much.
04:05Yori Boycapas on the same night took a 154-pound title away from Raul Marquez.
04:10So his imposing 69-2 record fits into the picture.
04:14And there's Frenchman Laurent Boudouani, who is the third of the three super welterweight champions.
04:1936 wins, two losses, and one draw.
04:24And, Larry, as we get ready to watch Mullins defending his title against Davide Cialante,
04:30the question arises, who is the Italian from Palestrina outside of Rome,
04:34and what do we know about him?
04:36I love the way you say Davide Cialante.
04:38Davide Cialante.
04:40I may not get to say it much after tonight, so I'm enjoying every minute of it.
04:43Well, what we know about him, he's one of those good-looking Italian guys.
04:47He's also one of those unbeaten fighters from Europe.
04:50And he's here.
04:51I've watched him on tape.
04:54He looks like he knows how to fight.
04:56But the quality of the opposition is somewhere between suspect and unknown.
05:03However, an Italian journalist I've known for decades
05:06has told me that he's the best Italian middleweight since Nino Benvenuti,
05:11who famously beat and was beaten by the great Emil Griffith.
05:15Although there's another pretty good middleweight in Italy right now
05:19by the name of Marvin Hagler, who lives up in northern Italy,
05:26where he is spending his life.
05:29And maybe after tonight, he'll decide that he ought to be the best Italian middleweight.
05:34Who knows? He may be.
05:36But we'll find out more about Cialante as we watch him.
05:38In the meantime, another one of those great human stories.
05:41Keith Mullings, George Foreman, is a terrific family man,
05:45and waited a long time to get the kind of opportunity he's got now.
05:48And you just love seeing his enthusiasm
05:50about continuing to pursue his craft and get better at age 30.
05:54Yeah, I don't think the age has anything to do with it.
05:56He's going to have to just stick with what he's doing.
05:59He's gotten here pretty much on an opportunity.
06:02The opportunity was presented. He took advantage of it.
06:05And now you've got to think like that every time you get into the ring.
06:07You start thinking that you are all of what people say you are.
06:11Then you can look for the downfall.
06:12But I think he's on the right road thus far.
06:14Yeah, it doesn't seem very likely that a big head will overtake Keith Mullings.
06:18This is one of the nicest and most humble human beings
06:21we'd have the privilege of meeting in boxing in the past several years.
06:24We gave you the brief version of the story earlier.
06:27Here's the longer version of the Keith Mullings saga.
06:29In a sport where all too often, the headlines are grabbed by the sorry misadventures of troubled competitors.
06:42Here's a story of a guy you're just thrilled to root for.
06:45Keith Mullings was one of eight children in a close-knit, working-class family in Brooklyn.
06:49The Mullings didn't have much, but together they learned some of life's most important values.
06:54A lot of things come with your family, you know.
06:57A lot of things are instilled with you.
07:01Not giving up on yourself, you know.
07:04Not being bullied around, sticking up for your rights if you're in the right.
07:08And that's the difference between right from wrong.
07:11Keith used his family's guidance to help him avoid drugs and alcohol.
07:14In high school, he was a football star and was voted by his classmates most likely to succeed.
07:21He went on to Brooklyn College, but he couldn't afford the tuition.
07:24So after a year in school, he joined the Army.
07:27And after another year at Fort Bragg, Private Mullings still felt his desire to compete.
07:32So he learned how to box at age 22.
07:35One year later, Keith was an artilleryman in Operation Desert Storm.
07:39It was a setback to his budding ring career, but it didn't completely stop him.
07:43I bought my training gloves.
07:46I bought headgears for the, you know, a couple sets of headgears, a couple sets of gloves, a couple sets of cups.
07:51And sometimes I would just hang up a duffel bag, fill it with sand, put it on the pole, and work out that way.
07:58When the Gulf War began, Keith Mullings experienced realities far scarier than those of his childhood days on the streets of Flatbush.
08:06There was some times when we were just in a position, you have incoming, and boom, boom.
08:12And then, like, all the bomb may have fell, landed a mile away from you, but its impact blew out all the windows in the jeeps, and your tent was in, flossing, it's like, oh, that was a close one.
08:27But you pray, have faith that you're going to make it out.
08:34Keith Mullings survived the war and turned pro boxer in 1993 after his honorable discharge.
08:39For the next four years, he educated himself as a sparring partner for Roy Jones, often spending two months away from his family.
08:47Well, it's a sacrifice, but anything good in life to, you know, to be achieved, you have to sacrifice.
08:53But after winning his first 13 fights, Keith lost three of the next five, and was tight cast as a journeyman when he got his first title shot last September.
09:03Undefeated Raul Marquez with his 154-pound title on the line against unknown challenger Keith Mullings, who's having the night of his life.
09:12Virtually everyone at ringside thought Mullings had won, but Marquez was given a controversial split decision win.
09:19Still, the promoter acknowledged Mullings had given a credible performance and gave him a second title shot, this time against Terry Norris.
09:26It was a blessing because, you know, beating Norris would have been a lot better than, you know, for my name and reputation and everything like that, than beating Marquez.
09:39Tonight, Keith Mullings will earn $350,000, more than he was paid for his first 20 fights combined.
09:59A few months ago, he couldn't afford insurance or Christmas gifts for his children.
10:03Now, he just bought a home.
10:05When I get all the pieces in place, like I say, you know, where, you know, about my retirement for the wife and myself, the kids' education, and, you know, the home we want, and, you know, just these little things.
10:20Then I could probably sit back and exhale a little bit, you know.
10:24Right now, I'm still got no breath holding it.
10:28Can't take it away from me.
10:29I'm still holding tight, you know.
10:30For Keith Mullings, the future is bright.
10:33Though boxing offers him no guarantees, he's not worried.
10:37He's a survivor, a man who, win or lose, has fought battles and faced adversities far more difficult than his assignment tonight.
10:44I used the standard American vernacular in saying that Keith and his wife have bought a house.
10:54Yesterday in our meeting, he corrected me and said, we've moved into a house.
10:58Until the bank doesn't own it, I don't claim that I do.
11:01That's the kind of caution he brings to all of his enterprises.
11:05Tail of the tape for Keith Mullings against Davide Cialante.
11:12And you can see that Mullings gives up two years in age and an inch in height to Cialante.
11:17Cialante weighed in at 153 and three quarters and has put on six and a quarter pounds since then.
11:22Mullings has put on 11 pounds since weighing in at 154.
11:26A three-inch reach advantage for Mullings, even though he is slightly the shorter of the two.
11:31Punch that numbers, Larry.
11:32There you see, I don't know what really to make of these things because the caliber of the opposition is so diverse.
11:43Mullings' numbers against Terry Norris.
11:48This may be more interesting.
11:50You can see that Cialante does use his jab.
11:54Mullings is more of a power fighter.
11:58Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
12:01Once again, the Keith Mullings, Davide Cialante fight is scheduled for 12 rounds.
12:06There is no standing eight count.
12:08No three knockdown rule.
12:10Only the referee can stop the fight.
12:11And you cannot be saved by the bell at any round, including the 12th and final round.
12:16Jim.
12:17Thank you, Harold.
12:22Cialante will enter.
12:23Cialante has another job and a hobby that's very interesting, which tells you something about this handsome Italian.
12:36He is a land surveyor in his father's construction company, and in his spare time, he fixes ruined antique furniture and has furnished the home with it.
12:51So apparently the Italian is partial to American music.
13:10music takes the time coming into the
13:18ring seems very poised very focused
13:27and since boxing since he's five years
13:31old taught by his grandfather behind
13:36the back of his parents yeah yesterday
13:39Larry you asked him whether his parents
13:41at what point his parents got on board
13:44and supported his boxing career and he
13:46said I'm not sure they have yet and the
13:50record for Davide Chalante 23 wins no
13:54losses only 13 KOs so he's had to go the
13:57distance to win 10 times European
14:01titlist at this weight level and his
14:04opponent he was a sparring partner to
14:08Roy Jones for three and a half years
14:10interesting that both Phillips and Mullings
14:13the twin headliners on the card have
14:15connections to Jones Mullings used to spend a lot of time in Pensacola
14:20helping Roy prepare for his fights
14:22his fights I should say and he says that from that he learned how to keep a tight
14:29defense and how to make his offense work off of his defense
14:32what yeah I'm gonna get the
14:36what yeah I know
14:38I'm gonna get up
14:39oh
14:39recently awarded a certificate of recognition by the borough of Brooklyn where he went to high
15:06college graduated from James Madison High School in Flatbush voted most likely to succeed although
15:23by his own admission he was no star student claims he had just a 70 average when he graduated
15:31most likely to succeed and the record for Keith Mullins these numbers went out the window when
15:41he knocked out Terry Norris and of the four losses a couple of more split decisions Larry as you
15:47pointed out earlier and he and he took some fights on short notice so maybe the record doesn't really
15:51tell the story of Keith Mullins and now let's go up to Michael Buffer for the official introduction

18:40to the center
18:42Keith David
18:46I've spoken to you both in the dressing rooms remember two things you defend yourselves at all times
18:52a strong very determined champion
19:01against the quick well-schooled challenger
19:09you ready
19:10Cirlante has looked so calm and measured ever since he stepped into the ring
19:15I'm waiting for the wonder if his excitement level rises beyond this at some point
19:23okay
19:24this guy looks as though he's getting ready for a routine sparring session george
19:28he's in good shape also
19:32first fight ever in the united states first fight ever outside of italy
19:36he's either masking a giant case of nerves
19:39or he's totally unaffected by all of the unusual circumstances in which he finds himself
19:45we spoke earlier and he said his stool is his hometown
19:50wherever you put that stool down he takes the seat he's at home
19:53says he's always wanted to be a fighter ever since he was a little boy
19:56his family might have looked for something different they think he has artistic talents
20:00and he uses those as larry's pointed out he has to use his hands in a different way tonight
20:05mullings try to establish the jab to start off round number one charlante poking his jab as well
20:12chalante has a great opportunity here a guy like mullins who's come out some
20:17tough fights recently he's you don't challenge him too much and you won't get much of a fight
20:22out of him but you can stand back jab you long right hand just to reach your heads don't get
20:28involved much in the exchanges you can win this fight
20:32mullins believed that charlante would be vulnerable to uppercuts and he's already hit
20:36him with one solid uppercut mullins is landing some very good jabs which is not normally his game
20:45and a couple of good body shots also
20:47the past fights mullins has done better when he's retaliating trying to get on top of someone who
20:59think he's not much interesting to see how he does when he's aggressive here well and when he's being
21:07treated with the kind of respect which which charlante will treat him because that you're exactly right
21:12guys like marques and norris went in against mullins thinking this is an opponent i'll put him out of
21:16here yeah they took him lightly and he of course capitalized on it mullins missing with the right
21:22hand counter there charlante has been a little tentative with his jab since early in the bout
21:28does seem to have been backed up a little bit by mullins his early stuff
21:32mullins mentioned earlier on about him not being able to get off in the last fight with norris and
21:42he never did say why you got to go back to the drawing board and turn out why you're not getting
21:46off could happen again tonight he felt like the first five rounds against norris he was exhausted
21:52couldn't throw punches in combination just surviving out there then once he got what he felt was his second
21:58wind along about the sixth round he dominated the fight but he said he had never felt anything like
22:05what he felt in the first few rounds against norris and he gave norris a lot of credit saying when terry
22:10came out at that pace i thought to myself i've moved into a different league here
22:15a guy like mullins who goes around and lose uh four boxing matches it could be because of the
22:26point system and you don't know how to win fights
22:30charlante excites the italians in the crowd with one left hook as the round comes to a close and when
22:35we go to the blue corner to davide charlante's corner our interpreter is the multilingual joel brody
22:42who speaks seven different languages italian is the one he'll use for us okay
22:52hit him with the right do something with the left
23:00that's when you have to do that's when you have to really strike him when he when he leaves it open
23:13the main thing in this fight you stay loose and work the shot that you used to work
23:17you know how to work the four five to the body five two three everything's good just loosen up a
23:22little bit more loosen up and have fun baby loosen up and have fun
23:39round two begins davide charlante bought a little bit under wraps in the first round
23:45as he threw 55 punches but 47 of them were jabs only attempted eight power shots
23:51maybe he's not willing to open up and throw many power shots because mullings is countering effectively
23:56early on
24:03george do you see in charlante that stand-up style that we uh frequently associate with western
24:08european fighters that's great and that's it's often important to have it because mullins have
24:12been fighting in the united states a lot and you can really get them off balance by standing up using
24:17jab not much power wonder and the boxes from italy have always been good stand-up fighters
24:24nino benvenuti yep and they'll surprise you with this power out of nowhere if you're not careful
24:29but so far here in the first two rounds the power has belonged to keith mullings no doubt about it
24:37you don't know he's riding his confidence level now he's a hiding
24:48mullings is hands up as charlante throws the right hand lead
24:53mullings trying to sneak his right hand to the body
24:56charlante looking for opportunities to land his dad
25:00charlante with the right cross and mullings counters with the left
25:08now charlante corner should tell him hey whenever this guy hits you with one punch
25:12make sure you get back on him with five when the thing on point points don't look for a knockout
25:18so far these guys could be fighting in a 10 square foot ring without an official they're just standing right
25:24there testing each other's skills and strength double jab my mother and when you watch keith mullings
25:33you see something that george foreman frequently talks about which is land the punch don't try to
25:39make every punch a knockout punch keith mullings is very content much of the time to simply land a blow
25:45at about half power rather than trying to rock his opponent with every shot cut on
25:51right hand by charlante's left eye good right hand by charlante left hook partially blocked
25:59charlante's right hand which is best part of the fight
26:01i think there's a little cut under date davida charlante's left line
26:08hard right hand by mullings follows with the left hook
26:27balling's very aggressive as round two comes to a close
26:40relax everything is coming real good key you're fighting the fight where you what we wanted to
26:45fight as long as he stay with what he's doing no problem he's in the fight but he can't lay
26:51he's in the fight
27:02okay
27:04okay
27:06no no no
27:08two times he already did that don't let him do it
27:19the charlante corner apparently relatively quiet
27:32you saw him being treated for the cut under the eye
27:36keep mullings landing 20 of 55 jabs or check it 19 of 45 jabs in round number two
27:49it's very active stuff for mullings
27:52good left hook by charlante that time and mullings got him back with a little counter left
28:06chelante's landing enough to get a chance to show if he has some power
28:15mullings has him backing up most of the time
28:19right hand lead by charlante partially blocked by mullings
28:27chelante gradually becoming more aggressive in the fight
28:38mullings got a little close to that time on this combination close enough to land didn't miss with the one two three right hand to the body by mullings he landed another uppercut as well
29:06this is real old-fashioned close quarters boxing
29:19boxing and punching
29:21mullings with another right hand to the body and a quick left hand in close
29:26chelante able to land but not able to back mullings up
29:31mullings keeps his defense really high
29:39chelante has not been able to find chelante has not been able to find that right opening
29:44to get that extra good punch and call into it
29:48so that you gotta play also he doesn't seem to commit to his punches as much as keith does either george
29:54if he could do some fainting here just to get him to reach in and drop in his hands a little bit
29:58to land it would be a little more successful
30:02he hasn't done one thing yet
30:05with our right hand yeah
30:07charlante saw the opening for the right hand there and landed it but mullings walking through it
30:12sometimes when a guy keeps his defense up high you almost have to wait until he throws a punch
30:20before you can do anything and that's what chelante is doing waiting
30:25delante was a very handsome guy when he entered the ring three rounds ago
30:31he is
30:33considerably less handsome right now
30:35although that
30:37that was his best round however jim in 1950 the city college of new york basketball team conquered the world and captured the hearts of new yorkers
30:45but the story sadly didn't end there
30:48through rarely seen home movies and revealing interviews
30:51now you can follow a tale of triumph and tragedy
30:53as hbo sports presents city dump
30:56the story of the 1951 ccny basketball scandal
31:01it premieres tuesday march 24th at 10 o'clock pm eastern and pacific time
31:06city dump another hbo sports documentary
31:12no problem don't worry about it
31:14nothing is wrong
31:17let's see if you can do it now come on measure it measure it
31:23you can do it now
31:25come on
31:26come on
31:29out
31:33my box
31:35stop boxing stop boxing go to neutral corner
31:39get all this off of him look
31:45off of him all his eyes
31:46referee larry o'connell wants uh mullings to be decreased above the eyes
31:51just on the top just on the top okay
31:54and a little bit of a degreasing for charlante in his corner as well
31:57and now larry o'connell says okay they're greaseless enough
32:04remarkably similar similar punch stat numbers through the first three rounds
32:08mullings through 220 punches charlante through 223
32:13but mullings has landed 34 more than his opponent
32:17so numerically at least he has the edge in the bow
32:23so they are standing in the middle of the ring
32:25he steps jab and step to his left
32:28which is classical which you should do when you're in with a punch
32:31he does not think he thinks that grunted italian every time he comes through
32:40the price
32:42I don't think he's the grunted Italian every time he
32:53throws a punch doesn't seem able to hurt Mullins that's what he should give up
33:01trying to hurt him and just get out there win the boxing man Lance yeah land
33:06punches you got judges to score a point on the point system
33:12blood trickling now from the nose of the Vita Terlante
33:17not sure whether that blood comes from the cut under the left eye or whether
33:20that's a new trickle from one of the nostrils
33:28neither fighter has ever been knocked down or out
33:36when you travel this far away from home that's Atlanta has you got to mix it up
33:41you got to take chances that's what he's doing
33:43stand a little closer that I'm sure he would if he was at home
33:50this is the type of fighter he is George he's a stand-up boxer puncher he comes at
33:55you that's what's got him this far and he's not going to change against Mullins
34:00he does a better job when he's boxing but once he throws his elbows in close and lean
34:05in he gets the worst of it but outside he seemed to be superior
34:07well Mullins did his best work against both Marquez and Norris in close
34:23hard right hand uppercut by Mullins
34:30hard right hand uppercut by Mullins
34:32right thing right now looks like he needs the Italian red cross
34:39because he is a mask of blood right now
34:47you're working good this is why you a champion because you work hard for what you got to get
34:54and the same thing now but remember we got to stay busy and I don't want no hard shot you know how you get inside you shoot him like that and you start throwing the body with the shot
35:01throw your body with the shot
35:03throw your body with the shot
35:08and break on the
35:13he's hitting low too right now he's hitting low
35:16you got to work your body with the hair
35:18no how to be short
35:20just short
35:22just short
35:24just short
35:27He didn't know yeah, you got to work your body within here. No, I'm sure I just sure what what I think
35:32That is that is you going from now on and my chip winning block don't let it hurt you
35:40Come on
35:44Breathe well breathe breathe well
35:49It's okay
35:51As you can see the ring position watching him closely and
35:59Now saying something to the referee Larry O'Connell although none of the cuts on and
36:06Cialat they seem to be dangerous at all. They don't affect his vision
36:10Although the one below the eye Jim is going to puff up the eye is definitely going to be hard to see out of it a few rounds
36:16They go take it out. Take it out. See how Harold let him he scored it through the first four rounds
36:22Yeah, I got a 39 37 three rounds to one chief Mullins
36:25You know Jim show me a European fighter and I'll show you got a come out of the totem poles
36:29He just stands too straight up to beat each other thing
36:32And you can't miss his head and that's what Mullins is doing landing constantly with that jab
36:36Going with the right hand to the body and coming back up hit to the head with a left hook and Davida is all busted up
36:42This is not going to go too much longer. You saw dr. Howard Taylor take a hard look at the V-day. I can't see him letting this go much longer
36:49Well, it's a championship fight Harold and none of them. He has no blood pouring into his eyes. His vision is clear. I
36:58Don't see any reason at this point
37:01To call a fight just got a bloody nose and a welt under his eye
37:05He's taken some punishment as Mullings his landing with greater and greater accuracy as the fight goes on in the last round
37:12Mullings landed 45 and 79 punches. That's a 57 percent connect rate
37:18He's landing the jab and the close-in power shots and the body shots
37:22Jarlante is still fighting aggressively and landing, but he's the one who's getting busted up
37:29Which can't do him any good on the judges score cards in a close round now
37:34It's hard to take rounds when your place. I mean your face looks like a plate of lasagna
37:38I was having a lot to do with his breathing. He's having to keep his mouth open to land here
37:45Well Mullings just landed a very good right hand and Jarlante came right back tough kid
37:52Mullings is so solid hands up steps forward always in position to do something or the other
37:58Well, this is turning into a war now
38:07Yeah, at age 30 and after only 20 professional bouts keep Mullings shows you a lot of professionalism
38:16Fights out of a well-designed concept and doesn't vary from it
38:28Jarlante said that people would be staying up till four o'clock in the morning to watch this in his hometown of palestrina
38:43Actually, it'll be well beyond four in the morning now
38:45Like five
38:47Oh
39:05It's a paint job
39:07Come on. What's happening? No, man. No, no, actually they're done. It's not accidental
39:22He's looking pretty
39:24Yeah, he's gonna he's wrong
39:26He's wrong he's wrong
39:28He's wrong. I think your nose is still okay. It's it's a lie. Your nose is okay. Don't listen to the referee is stopping the fight
39:42Referee Larry O'Connell stops the fight a great boy. Tell him a great boy. He's got a broken nose actually broken
39:54Jarlante's cut man. Dr. Mario Sturla told our interpreter told Brody good point that Jarlante's never been caught before
40:03And the referee just shouted that he has a broken nose
40:09I guess I'm a little old-fashioned about this. I think he was still fighting effectively. I think that
40:17Blood was not coming into his eyes. He looked worse than he was
40:21I think he should have been given a chance to go on you, George
40:26Well, if he had only land some kind of power or something in the fight then I would have said the same thing
40:32But he wasn't doing a whole lot to protect himself
40:34Right. I think that's the problem is one more round of the same thing as he couldn't keep Mullings off of him and he I mean
40:39He was he was not able to go forward
40:41He was not able to back Mullings up and he was taking a lot of punishment as a result of that
40:44He's a young guy. He's overmatched. He'll come back again
40:48The referee stopped it on the advice of Dr. Howard Taylor and Dr. Taylor
40:52Has proven here in the past that he is a very safety-oriented doctor
40:57He's got a nice, young look, good look
40:59When I add this, our numbers people just told me
41:03That Cialante threw 103 punches in that last round. He wasn't winding down
41:14He's a nice, good-looking young fellow. He'll be back
41:18As a matter of fact, he'll probably be back with a lot more experience
41:21This was a learning experience
41:24And he's able to smile at Mullings. He's quite a gentleman
41:26You can't help it like the Vita Cialante
41:29All right, Michael Buffer is ready with you
41:31Ladies and gentlemen, referee Larry O'Connell
41:34Acting on the advice of ringside physician Dr. Howard Taylor
41:38Calls a halt to the bout
41:40At the end of round five
41:42Because of a very severe fracture to the nose suffered by Cialante
41:46The winner by TKO victory the official time at the end of fifth round round number five
41:51Still WBC super welterweight champion of the world
41:57The pride of Brooklyn
41:59Brooklyn, Keith Mullings
42:02So another victory for Keith Mullings who hails from Brooklyn
42:08But lives in Fayetteville, North Carolina
42:10Trains on Fort Bragg, one of the world's largest military installations
42:14Surrounded by all of his buddies who are airborne special forces types
42:17Judges' scorecards show, incidentally, that two judges had
42:23Well, check it. One judge had Mullings leading in the fight
42:28One judge had it even at 48 apiece
42:32And Judge Barbara Perez had Cialante leading in the fight
42:3649-46, in other words, she had given Cialante the second, third, fourth, and fifth rounds
42:41Interesting
42:45And now let's go to Larry Merchant in the ring with Keith Mullings
42:49Thank you
42:51Congratulations, Keith
42:53Hold it down a little bit, baby
42:56Let me take care of my business now
42:59All right
43:01You took care of business here just a moment ago
43:03Yes, I did indeed, you know, we brought the number one contender over here
43:06Came from Italy, he's a game fighter, but he came to take mine
43:10And I wasn't allowed it. I worked too hard to get here
43:12And I worked hard for this, real hard
43:14And I'm not going to relinquish it that easy
43:16Do you know that the judges
43:19Yes
43:20Had scored this fight even
43:22Up through the fifth round
43:24One for you, one for him, and one even
43:26What are your thoughts about that?
43:28What is new? What is new?
43:30I've been going through that my whole career
43:31That's why I wasn't allowed, I wasn't rushing in there
43:33Trying to, you know, get him out
43:35But I knew I had to take him out
43:36Because the way my career has been going
43:38I don't know if there's some evil karma around me
43:39Or something
43:40That's not allowing me to win
43:42Fights that I know I'm way ahead of
43:43But I had to take him out
43:44So I took my time and I broke him down
43:46I've seen the jab was working well
43:47So why try to go out there and do more than I have to?
43:50I knew the jab was going to take care of the business and it did
43:52You normally aren't a jabber
43:53Why was the jab open for you?
43:55I'm a fighter that makes ways
43:58And whatever was open, I use
43:59You know, today the jab was the easiest thing
44:02So I'm going to go with the easiest thing
44:03I'm going to make my job as easy as possible
44:06When you saw him busting up, what were your thoughts?
44:10It's just a matter of time
44:12Jab, Wonder Twins, keep working, activate
44:15What did you call this?
44:17Wonder Twins, activate
44:19Your Wonder Twins? Is that what you call your
44:21Wonder Twins?
44:23The old time cartoon
44:25The Wonder Twins
44:26And that's what they are, Wonder Twins
44:27And they activate it tonight
44:30What plans or fantasies do you have looking ahead?
44:34Just to fight the best, you know, I thought the IBF belonged to me
44:37You know, I thought I'd be one Marquez, the fight against Marquez
44:41So I like to fight nothing but the best out there
44:42I like to bring the excitement, exciting fights back to boxing
44:45Back in the days like when you had the Leonard and the Hearns
44:47And the Hearns and all these top fighters fighting one another
44:49I think it's time that boxing can get back to that
44:52Bring on the Delahoyas, bring on the, what's that called?
44:55The iCorte
44:56The iCorte
44:57All the kids that just won the IBFL
44:58Would you?
45:00Yuri Boy, yes
45:01Would you fight Bernard Hopkins for the middleweight championship?
45:03The middleweight championship
45:04If that's the exciting fight, they want me to go up there and fight them
45:06Yes, I will
45:07I'm not feeling that's a good fight
45:08Money
45:09But Moon not
45:10Yeah, my man just got it right
45:11He got it right, don't you?
45:12Money
45:13You know, that's what it takes
45:14I work hard to get here
45:15I think I deserve to get paid
45:16I'll fight anybody out there
45:17And I'll put on a good fight
45:18I'm a fighter
45:19You think all that?
45:20You sure are
45:21Yes, and like I said
45:22Top rank, thank you
45:23Bob Arrow
45:24Thank you, Keith
45:26Jim
45:27Another guy who wants to get paid
45:29And George Foreman
45:30A look at the celebration for Keith Mullings at the end
45:3430-year-old total professional
45:36Who understands himself and his place in the boxing world
45:39Very well at this moment
45:41Final punch stat numbers
45:42And you'll see that Cialante threw 36 more punches than Mullings
45:46By CompuBox stats
45:48But Mullings landed 83 more punches than Cialante
45:51Thus the doubling of the percentage of landed punches
45:5549% to 25%
45:57The jab
45:58We told you from the beginning that Cialante would use his jab
46:02But that Mullings might well step it up and be almost as active with his own
46:06And that was entirely the case
46:08Again, Mullings landing nearly twice as many jabs as did Davide Cialante
46:14So another victory for Mullings
46:16Who wants to get into all of these discussions involving De La Hoya
46:19Trinidad, Huerta, Jose Luis Lopez, Bernard Hopkins
46:23I'm not sure who wants him
46:25But somebody's going to give him a shot sooner or later it seems to me
46:28But tonight was a great night
46:29It had this international flavor to it
46:31Someone from abroad
46:32He fought good
46:33He was landing a lot of punches
46:34And Larry even thought the fight should have gone on
46:36Yeah
46:37And so I think it was a good fight
46:38It was good for Mullings to show that he's a tough character
46:41He's got, what is it, Ike and Mike or something like that
46:44Yeah
46:45He's got the stuff
46:46He's got the stuff, no question about it
46:47Well thanks George, another good night with you
46:48Thank you
46:49Look forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks on the 28th
46:51When Shannon Briggs will be fighting against Lennox Lewis
46:54Here in Atlantic City
46:55That's going to be a good one
46:56That's going to be a good one
46:57You think so, huh?
46:58I think it's going to be very exciting
46:59Everybody's going to be a lot of surprises
47:00Why?
47:01Everybody thinks that Lewis is going to blow him away
47:03Well, you know, do you remember the young Cassius Clay
47:05And Doug Jones and Madison Square Garden
47:07The Bulls and everything in Maine
47:09That guy, Muhammad Ali now, is the greatest of all time
47:12So this guy, Shannon Briggs, may have a little taste of greatness in his life
47:15I'm still trying to find somebody who thinks that he won his fight against you, George
47:19Yesterday is dead and gone
47:21Yes, well said
47:23We'll see again in a couple of weeks
47:24Larry Merchant, your final comments on the doubleheader that produced the expected results
47:29But in some ways, in an unexpected manner
47:32One note, one footnote
47:35The American judge was the one who gave four rounds to one for Cirlante
47:40Yep
47:41Whatever that means
47:42We are the fairest people on the planet
47:44Aren't we?
47:45A couple of notes
47:48One footnote and subplot to Vince Phillips
47:53It's very possible because he has just one fight under contract
47:58One option under contract to Bob Arum that he will move on to another promoter
48:03Because Arum can't get Costa Zou to fight him
48:06And Arum apparently doesn't want him to fight Oscar Delahoya
48:11Oscar Delahoya
48:12So what's the point?
48:13So he may be moving on
48:14A note about Keith Mullings
48:16Earlier tonight, someone asked for my autograph
48:19Some guy was hard up for autographs
48:22And he turned over a magazine and let me sign it on the back
48:25And he said the reason that you have to sign small on the back was
48:29I asked Keith Mullings
48:30And he scrawled his name across the entire front page
48:34Of this boxing magazine
48:36He deserves it
48:37So Keith Mullings thinks he belongs up there
48:39He thinks that he deserves to be on the covers of the boxing magazines
48:44And he's still a hungry veteran fighter
48:48It's nice to see
48:49Two good stories, a good night at the fights for two American fighters
48:54So what you're saying is that if Mullings hasn't yet had his chance at a Delahoya or a Trinidad or a Quarte
48:59He's at least relegated Larry Merchant to the back page
49:02Absolutely
49:03Gotta start somewhere I guess
49:05Well, thanks very much for being with us
49:07We'll have a final word on what happened in the boxing ring in a moment
49:09Let's look ahead to some upcoming programs on HBO
49:12Thanks for being with us
49:13We'll have a final word on what happened in the boxing ring in a moment
49:15Let's look ahead to some upcoming programs on HBO

50:43What could he do next?
50:45Join us April 18th for what could be another memorable and exciting night of boxing
50:50And here tonight in the Mark G. Edison Arena at the Trump Taj Mahal
50:54Vince Phillips scored a surprisingly easy two and a half minute round one knockout of Alfonso Sanchez of Mexico
51:01Sanchez, who just a few months ago looked like a sensational prospect
51:05Was pounded to the canvas by right hands by Phillips
51:09Followed up with that little left hook that put him away
51:11Two and a half minute knockout for cool Vince Phillips
51:14And then Keith Mullings, who like Phillips was a surprise success story in 1997
51:20Followed up his knockout of Terry Norris with a technical knockout victory over Italian Davide Cialante
51:26He broke Cialante's nose and the ring doctor felt there was no point in watching it continue
51:31So another victory for Mullings in his first title defense
51:35Coming up immediately following tonight's coverage of world championship boxing
51:38Stay tuned for Arliss 21, Truth and Responsibility
51:41Followed by Bad Moon on the East Coast
