00:00In meme culture, especially on TikTok, we've seen films, TV shows, and other pieces of IP
00:05get rediscovered and blow up with viral content. We call it Recycling IP, because it rhymes with
00:10Grug. And the latest movie to face it is the 2013 DreamWorks animated classic The Croods.
00:15The Croods is about a family of cave people who are forced out of their cave. It stars
00:19Nicolas Cage as the father, Grug, Emma Stone as the daughter, Eep, and Ryan Reynolds as some guy.
00:24The title scene of the film is particularly notable, as it features the family sprinting
00:29at triple speed to get their breakfast, set to this marching band music.
00:37This scene was iconic enough to make TikToker River Tide think of it during her workout routine,
00:42which she made a video about, set to the music from the scene, garnering over 7 million views
00:46in just under two weeks. In its wake, other creators would also start using the sound in
00:50their videos, joking about how motivational the music is, especially while pretending to
00:55be the Croods running for their breakfast. But this isn't the only scene from the movie
00:58that's getting memed. You may have seen users online insisting that certain things
01:02rhyme with Grug that don't actually rhyme with Grug. This is a direct reference to this
01:06scene in the movie, where the character Grug is discussing some of his new, uh, creative inventions.
01:11What is that on your head? It's called desperation.
01:16I call it a rug. Rhymes with Grug.
01:18TikTokers have been reimagining this scene, or particular line, to show Grug inventing other
01:24random things that we know about in the modern world, usually things with a negative connotation.
01:28Currently, the first known meme to use Rhymes with Grug as a punchline was a video shared by
01:33YouTuber Maddox the Psychic in February of 2020.

01:41But the meme really gained traction in early May 2025, seemingly after TikToker Brian200 shared a video
01:47of himself dancing to a Jersey Club remix of the Crude's main theme, with a text caption reading,
01:53How I feel after using my own method to solve the maths problem. It rhymes with Grug.
01:57The video inspired further uses of Rhymes with Grug as a snow clone, meaning a fill-in-the-blank
02:02or Madlibs type of phrasal template. Other users would post videos and slideshows to this effect
02:06over the following days, naming other disastrous and tragic inventions that definitely don't rhyme
02:12with Grug. With these two Crude's memes running rampant, the franchise is seeing a general
02:16peak in public attention, as more references to the film and fan art of the characters keeps
02:20appearing. Some other recent examples of IP that's been recycled back into meme culture
02:24include Zoolander, the sitcom The Middle entering Sutok territory,
02:29Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, I won! I won a contest!
02:33and Nickelodeon's Henry Danger, which sparked several meme templates last summer.
