00:00:00to save the brakes and to save his rubber and and just when to attack but for my
00:00:06money it's between these two okay well the cars are in position now and in just
00:00:12a moment everything should be in readiness for the 1982 Belgian Grand
00:00:17Prix from Zolder I would imagine one man who certainly won't be worrying about
00:00:23the accident will be Nicky Lauder he seems to have the temperament to handle
00:00:27those sort of things particularly having gone through such a a nasty accident
00:00:31himself yes I'll be the furthest thing from their mind that's for sure okay
00:00:35the cars are off let's join Murray Walker and James Hunt
00:00:42and one of the Alfa Romeo's Giacomelli it's Giacomelli in the Alfa Romeo and Salazar
00:00:48out at the beginning of the Belton Grand Prix and Nigel Mansell is stuck getting a
00:00:54push start yes that's most unfortunate for those those two cars it's so narrow
00:00:59the track there at Zolder at the start that really where one car stalls like
00:01:04that there goes Derek Warwick just getting away a bit of a late starter both
00:01:07drivers all right cars probably not damaged very much it was just a little
00:01:10bumper of things but it's so narrow when one car stops on the grid it's almost
00:01:14inevitable that contact will be made and we've had some a lot of start line
00:01:17accidents it's old and I really think that they should widen that track there for the
00:01:21start lap one then and soon we will see we hope well it's one of the Renaults that's for
00:01:27sure and behind him is Rosberg and I can't identify which of the Renaults is in the
00:01:33lead at the moment but certainly it is Renaults first and third with the very
00:01:37determined finish driver Kiki Rosberg it looks like René Arnoux and it is René Arnoux who has had such
00:01:45terrible luck this season and up behind Alain Prost is Nicky Lauda in the
00:01:50Barbara McCarran and tires as ever going to count in this race so Rosberg second
00:01:57then Prost goes through then Lauda there's Alvareto there are Patrese and Piquet and through they go and you will have noticed that Derek Warwick had a bad start at the beginning
00:02:08so one lap has now been completed there is the spread out as they go down to the
00:02:15canal turn with the enormous canal you will see in the background as they turn there it is and
00:02:23René Arnoux is as he has done so many times before leading from the start with
00:02:28Rosberg crossed, Lauda, Di Cesaris, Alvareto, Patrese, Piquet and there is Elio De Angelis in about ninth position
00:02:40now this is the second lap up to the chicane
00:02:42I see some yellow flags waving up at the chicane at the top of the picture just in the background there but we didn't get a chance to see what the incident was
00:02:50well René Arnoux will be praying I'm sure even this early in the race that he has car reliability this time
00:03:02you will recall at San Marino he had the most appalling luck there is the very talented Alvareto still ahead in the candy
00:03:11of the two turbo BMW Brabham cars of Patrese and Piquet as the leader goes through
00:03:19as Alvareto has certainly come on a lot and it looks now as if Ken Tyrrell has put together a much better car than he has had for the last couple of years
00:03:27Alvareto impressed a great deal at Imola in the last Grand Prix but it was difficult to make comparisons then because it wasn't a full field there
00:03:35and there weren't of course all the Foka teams but he impressed there and he's certainly confirming it here he's qualified very well indeed
00:03:42he was very quick in qualifying and he's at the moment doing a very competent job in the race
00:03:47well let's watch carefully Keki Rosberg I remind you that in second place he is in the new FW08 Williams car
00:03:55he is on Goodyear tyres and the leader René Arnoux is on Michelin tyres are going to be very very critical in this race
00:04:03and as the fuel loads light we expect to see them go a lot quicker and now you look down and you can see the gap
00:04:10when I took it on the stopwatch it was four-fifths of a second between the yellow and white turbo Renault
00:04:18in the lead of René Arnoux and the white and green Williams of Keki Rosberg
00:04:23and Rosberg closing right up at the very very tight right-hander
00:04:28and then it crossed and already Lauda and Watson are starting to chase him
00:04:34yes it looks as if Lauda's trying to find a way around Alan Frost
00:04:38I think it was interesting that helicopter shot that we had
00:04:42you see how the Williams closes up in the corners
00:04:43the car at the chassis obviously doing a lot better in the corners
00:04:46and now the turbo goes away on the straights
00:04:48the old story that we get every Grand Prix these days
00:04:51brawn against brains as far as chassis performance is concerned
00:04:56with the strong powerful turbo engines that they've got
00:04:59and they can't get quite as well around corners
00:05:01there he goes closing up again
00:05:03now they're on the power and he starts to fall back
00:05:05look at that Renault accelerate
00:05:06that a small difference in invisible acceleration means a really huge difference in power output of the engines
00:05:13now they come off to the main straight
00:05:16we'll see if we get a shot down there that the Renault really stretches his lead
00:05:19Lauda climbing all over the back of Frost
00:05:22but of course stuck when he gets to the straights
00:05:24and behind Nicky Lauda is Andrea de Cesaris
00:05:27and see now how Keki Rosberg seems to be getting the measure of the leader Arnoux
00:05:33but Arnoux pulls away on sheer power there
00:05:37as does Frost behind him in third place
00:05:40but it's a terrific race at the opening of this 70 lap Belgian Grand Prix
00:05:45I remind you
00:05:46René Arnoux leads
00:05:48Keki Rosberg second
00:05:49there they are
00:05:49and Lauda's going through and taking Frost
00:05:51up into third position
00:05:53goes the determined Austrian Nicky Lauda
00:05:55with Frost behind him
00:05:57and then de Cesaris
00:05:58yes excellent piece of driving by Lauda
00:06:00he was looking at the manoeuvre of the previous lap
00:06:03practising it possibly
00:06:04working out how he's going to do it
00:06:05here we see it again
00:06:06he's obviously come through the two previous corners
00:06:09he does very well to get that post to the Renault
00:06:11and he's been able to out break the heavier Renault
00:06:13into the corner
00:06:14and I think he'll now go away and chase Rosberg
00:06:18but of course I think Rosberg looks to me
00:06:20as if he's going to go a lot quicker
00:06:22than he is at the moment
00:06:23if he can get past Arnoux
00:06:24he's going to have the same problem
00:06:26that he'd be well advised
00:06:27to have been looking in his mirrors there
00:06:28although he probably couldn't have seen what Lauda did
00:06:30and picked that as probably the only real passing spot
00:06:33on the circuit for him
00:06:35and Keki Rosberg of course
00:06:37has got a score to pay off
00:06:40because he had his second place cancelled from Brazil
00:06:44De Cesaris is through as well
00:06:46right so Alain Prost
00:06:48as he did in the previous race at San Marino
00:06:51looks as though he has struck trouble
00:06:53and that is the world championship leader Alain Prost
00:06:56six points ahead of Nicky Lauda
00:06:58and now look at the gaff battle between Arnoux
00:07:02and Keki Rosberg is going
00:07:03and he's through
00:07:04into the lead goes Keki Rosberg
00:07:06and this is lap five in this 70 lap race
00:07:10incredible place to do it
00:07:12between the two right handers
00:07:13that's the most extraordinary piece of opportunist driving
00:07:16but he succeeded with the manoeuvre
00:07:18so full marks to Keki Rosberg
00:07:21of course having to take every opportunity with these runners
00:07:23if they present one you've got to pass
00:07:25that's Prost
00:07:26it looked to me as though Prost put his hand up
00:07:28and is out of the race
00:07:29let's check
00:07:30there goes Nicky Lauda
00:07:33well we'll have to take another check
00:07:36because Nicky Lauda goes through
00:07:37and could it have been Arnoux
00:07:39where is Arnoux in relation to Keki Rosberg
00:07:42it must have been René Arnoux
00:07:44I saw a Renault and I saw that it is
00:07:47Nicky Lauda is in second place
00:07:49and on lap six then
00:07:51we have the sensational situation
00:07:53that it would appear this early
00:07:55as though René Arnoux
00:07:57the race leader
00:07:58is once again with his bad luck jeep striking
00:08:01out of the race
00:08:03Alain Prost is down
00:08:05and there is the Renault pit
00:08:06and that must be
00:08:07we'll get a close look hopefully in a minute
00:08:09René Arnoux
00:08:11two world championship Grand Prix's
00:08:13to his credit in the past
00:08:14but today is not going to be another one
00:08:17and now it looks as though we're going to have
00:08:19the wonderful sight of the Williams
00:08:23there it is with Keki Rosberg
00:08:25and I remind you
00:08:26particularly our viewers in Australia
00:08:29but last year
00:08:30Alan Jones was in this commanding position
00:08:33having fought his way up into the lead
00:08:35ahead of his teammate Carlos Reutemann
00:08:37and Jones went off
00:08:39badly scored at his leg
00:08:41and now we have another Williams in the lead
00:08:44this year a new car Keki Rosberg
00:08:47with the ex world champion Nicky Lauda in second place
00:08:49there is Rosberg
00:08:51that is Lauda
00:08:52third is De Cesaris
00:08:54fourth is Arnoux
00:08:56and then Petrezia
00:08:58the thing that Keki has to do now of course
00:09:01is just settle back and get into a nice steady groove
00:09:04I don't think he has to worry about Lauda at this stage
00:09:07although Lauda is on Michelin tyres
00:09:09and Keki is on Goodyear
00:09:10so it'll be really a case of seeing which tyre holds up the best
00:09:13as the race progresses
00:09:15the marbles will build up on the outside
00:09:17and so therefore both drivers will have to take it extremely cautious
00:09:21but Lauda I think is in a very good position
00:09:24he can pace himself off Rosberg
00:09:26and Rosberg is the one who has to set the pace
00:09:28so it's going to develop into quite an interesting situation
00:09:30they are undoubtedly going to have a very gruelling race physically
00:09:55and it's important then therefore for anybody who can get in front to get away a bit
00:09:59in order to have a cushion
00:10:01against which to relax the driving a little bit later in the race
00:10:05well now watch Andrea De Cesaris in the Alfa Romeo
00:10:09because it looks to me with Rosberg going through
00:10:12and there is Lauda
00:10:14as though De Cesaris is closing up
00:10:16there is De Cesaris
00:10:17there is crossed fourth
00:10:19Patrese fifth
00:10:20Albaretto sixth
00:10:21and John Watson it looked like in seventh position
00:10:24Keki Rosberg
00:10:26and he is on lap eight in this 70 lap race
00:10:34lap eight then
00:10:36Keki Rosberg in the Saudia Williams
00:10:40leads that man that we are looking at now
00:10:43number eight
00:10:44Niki Lauda winner at Long Beach
00:10:46back after two years of absence from the sport
00:10:52and there disappearing down towards the chicane
00:10:54the red car of Andrea De Cesaris
00:10:56through the chicane goes Rosberg
00:10:59down towards the long left handed Sterewacht
00:11:02which is a third gear corner
00:11:04change up into four
00:11:06and where is Niki Lauda
00:11:10we should see the red and white Marlborough car
00:11:12there it goes there is De Cesaris
00:11:14so the first three are quite spread out
00:11:16and you are looking at number six Keki Rosberg
00:11:20fifth in South Africa
00:11:22disqualified from his second place
00:11:24and Brazil as Alain Prost number 15 in the Renault
00:11:28has got a turbo car behind him
00:11:30it is not however a turbo Renault
00:11:34it is the turbo of Riccardo Patrese
00:11:36who like his teammate Nelson Piquet
00:11:38had endless trouble in practice
00:11:40Rosberg completes a lap
00:11:42Lauda
00:11:44Well we rejoined Zolder
00:11:46and the positions haven't changed
00:11:48if anything Rosberg has increased his lead just fractionally
00:11:50Lauda seems to have settled in
00:11:52and so indeed does De Cesaris
00:11:55Patrese is doing very well
00:11:57and the BMW engine Braddon
00:11:58he is up into fourth place
00:11:59so it looks like just for the time being
00:12:01they are all playing a bit of a waiting game
00:12:03and sorting each other out
00:12:04and in the meantime
00:12:05we will switch back to Murray Walker
00:12:06and James Hunt at Zolder
00:12:11Very very unhappy
00:12:12because Nigel Mansell was a brilliant third
00:12:15and last year was the first Englishman
00:12:19to be up on the victory podium
00:12:21since James Hunt
00:12:23and away goes Keke Rosberg now
00:12:26now
00:12:28he will be attempting of course
00:12:30to build himself that cushion
00:12:31between himself and Nicky Lauda
00:12:33Nicky who is a very experienced
00:12:36and wily tactician
00:12:37may well be biding his time
00:12:39it is still early in the race
00:12:41this is lap 11
00:12:43and you can see the lead
00:12:45that Rosberg has got over Lauda
00:12:47and there is De Cesaris going through
00:12:49in the Alfa Romeo
00:12:51in third position
00:12:52followed by Patrese and Watson
00:12:54and it is very clear
00:12:56that the MP4 McLaren cars
00:12:59are very well suited to this circuit
00:13:02Lauda in second position
00:13:04Watson climbing up all the time
00:13:05and there is confirmation
00:13:06fastest lap
00:13:08fastest lap so far
00:13:09Nicky Lauda
00:13:101 minute 21.3
00:13:11slower than the lap record
00:13:13Yes the Marlborough McLarenty
00:13:15must really be applauded
00:13:16for bringing the car on
00:13:18I think Nicky's helped a lot
00:13:19with the development
00:13:20but since they built the car last year
00:13:22it has steadily improved
00:13:23they've done obviously
00:13:24an effective development program
00:13:26I think it made its biggest strides
00:13:28when Nicky joined the team
00:13:29whether that was coincidence
00:13:30or whether it was his help
00:13:31but undoubtedly Nicky's a very experienced test driver
00:13:34and the car is now
00:13:35I would say fully competitive
00:13:37amongst certainly amongst the Cosworth engine cars
00:13:43Cross dropping back
00:13:44and Michele Albaretto catching him
00:13:46Nelson Piquet goes through
00:13:48there is Derek Daly
00:13:49and De Cesaris
00:13:50and Jean-Pierre Jarrier
00:13:53in the Ocella
00:13:54is in about 10th position
00:13:55there is Jacques Lafitte
00:13:56well down in the Torbott
00:13:59which wasn't going at all well in practice
00:14:02and both Jacques Lafitte
00:14:04and Eddie Cheever
00:14:05despondently said
00:14:06that their cars were now too old
00:14:08they're desperately waiting
00:14:09for the new JS19
00:14:11which is definitely going to appear
00:14:14Guy Ligier says
00:14:15at Monaco
00:14:16which is the next Grand Prix
00:14:18coming up to the start of lap 13
00:14:36in this 70 lap race
00:14:39and the question is
00:14:41can Nicky Lauda do anything about the gap
00:14:43between himself and Nicky Rosberg
00:14:45Patrese goes through
00:14:47there's the turbo
00:14:49BMW powered car
00:14:50it is said
00:14:52that the Brabham team
00:14:53were not particularly anxious
00:14:55to run this car
00:14:56at Belgium
00:14:57and that they had an ultimatum
00:14:59from the BMW outfit
00:15:00to say that they would withdraw
00:15:02the engines
00:15:03and all the facilities
00:15:04that they had been given
00:15:05if Brabham did not run the turbos
00:15:08and they have done so
00:15:09John Watson's having a good race
00:15:11by the look of things
00:15:12that's him just following Patrese
00:15:14there in the Brabham
00:15:15and from what I can see
00:15:17they don't really appear
00:15:18to be losing much ground
00:15:19to the leaders
00:15:20and with the length of this race
00:15:22to go in a few dropouts
00:15:23it looks as if Watson
00:15:24could well be up there
00:15:26supporting Nicky Lauda
00:15:27or even possibly having a go to race him
00:15:30lap 13 out of 70
00:15:33and in the lead
00:15:35Keke Rosberg
00:15:36from second place
00:15:37Nicky Lauda
00:15:38third
00:15:39De Cesaris
00:15:40in fourth position
00:15:42behind De Cesaris
00:15:44and coming up well
00:15:46is Ricciardo Patrese
00:15:47then behind Patrese
00:15:49John Watson
00:15:50and we look down now
00:15:53on the Brabham BMW
00:15:55Patrese
00:15:56and Watson
00:15:57Patrese
00:15:58Patrese has extended the gap
00:16:00this is the man
00:16:02Ricciardo Patrese
00:16:03who spent four years
00:16:05with the Arrows team
00:16:06there he goes
00:16:09until this year
00:16:11so at the end of the 12th lap
00:16:14on lap 13
00:16:15with still a long long way to go
00:16:18Keke Rosberg
00:16:19is very much in command
00:16:21from Nicky Lauda
00:16:22with in third place
00:16:24Andrea De Cesaris
00:16:25then behind De Cesaris
00:16:27it is Patrese
00:16:29Patrese
00:16:30and Watson
00:16:31and Alain Prost
00:16:33flipping down the field
00:16:34all the time
00:16:48well they're still locked very much
00:16:50in the same position
00:16:51Rosberg still trying to get away
00:16:53Lauda
00:16:54as Murray said earlier
00:16:55with all his experience
00:16:56will be probably
00:16:58whilst trying to conserve
00:16:59both his own energy and strength
00:17:01and his tyres
00:17:02I feel sure
00:17:03we'll still be
00:17:04desperately trying to keep
00:17:05that gap
00:17:06from getting any larger
00:17:07and preferably
00:17:08trying to close it a bit
00:17:09no doubt that Rosberg
00:17:10will be charging
00:17:11full out at the moment
00:17:13it is easy to complain
00:17:17but whilst we're watching
00:17:18Rosberg
00:17:19and Lauda
00:17:20go through
00:17:21and with the knowledge
00:17:22that De Cesaris
00:17:23will be coming up
00:17:24in third position
00:17:25I hope the producer
00:17:26will take us down the field
00:17:27a bit
00:17:28because Alain Prost
00:17:29is now having a terrific scrap
00:17:31with Michele Alvareto
00:17:33and that is for sixth position
00:17:37and if Alvareto
00:17:38could get ahead of Prost
00:17:40it will push the Frenchman
00:17:42out of the World Championship
00:17:43points situation
00:17:44because sixth place
00:17:46is the lowest place
00:17:47you can finish in
00:17:49and score a single point
00:17:51and it will put
00:17:52the redoubtable Michele Alvareto
00:17:54who has made a terrific name
00:17:55for himself this season
00:17:56up into that desirable situation
00:17:59and we're looking now
00:18:01down from the helicopter
00:18:03at the race leader
00:18:04Keke Rosberg
00:18:06and if he keeps going
00:18:08as he has been going
00:18:10for the whole of this race
00:18:12it will be a wonderful victory
00:18:14first time out
00:18:16there it goes into the chicane
00:18:18now you see the gap
00:18:19as they accelerate away
00:18:20up the hill
00:18:21and then down towards the
00:18:23Te Alhman
00:18:26between Rosberg and Lauda
00:18:28well I know that there are
00:18:34a lot of viewers watching Channel 9
00:18:37out there in Australia
00:18:38I hope the weather is as good for you
00:18:40as it is here in Belgium
00:18:42bright, clear and dry
00:18:43after a very wet practice period
00:18:45you're watching Andrea de Cesaris
00:18:47on lap 15 in this 70 lap race
00:18:50this is the young star
00:18:53who was in pole position at Long Beach
00:18:56there goes Patrese through
00:18:58now leader goes through
00:18:59that's Rosberg
00:19:00second is Lauda
00:19:02third coming towards you is de Cesaris
00:19:04now look back
00:19:06and you see nothing
00:19:07because we go with him
00:19:08down the straight
00:19:10into the Sterebach
00:19:11that's the left-hander
00:19:13which leads down to the right-hand
00:19:15third gear canal turn
00:19:17yes it's a very important race for Andrea de Cesaris
00:19:21here because he's still got to prove himself
00:19:24after his basically good performance at Long Beach
00:19:28until he did do unfortunately
00:19:30what was predicted of him
00:19:31but admittedly a lot later
00:19:33and that was to put it into the wall
00:19:34when he got pole position there
00:19:35and led the race for the best part of half this
00:19:38up until about half distance
00:19:39before he assaulted the wall
00:19:42well he led some of that
00:19:44and Lauda passed him
00:19:45but he's crashed in almost
00:19:49at almost every meeting last year
00:19:51in one way or another
00:19:52and this of course will not
00:19:54further his career
00:19:55unless he can keep it on the island
00:19:56but at the moment
00:19:57he's having a good race
00:19:58he's up the field
00:19:59and so he's very much under the microscope
00:20:02to see if his performance is going to be worthwhile
00:20:04he's old enough now
00:20:06he's a young driver
00:20:07but he's old enough
00:20:08to stop crashing
00:20:09if he's going to do well in the future
00:20:13well John Watson in fifth position
00:20:15that's interesting
00:20:17now we can establish
00:20:19Les goes louder through in second place
00:20:21De Cesaris
00:20:22the next one up
00:20:23should be Riccardo Patrese
00:20:25but now on lap 17
00:20:29we are looking again at De Cesaris
00:20:32having seen Rosberg and Lauda through
00:20:35and this is the battle for fourth place
00:20:37Patrese in the Brabham BMW
00:20:39Watson in the McLaren
00:20:42and there is Alboreto
00:20:48who has got ahead of Alain Prost
00:20:51and Nick and Nelson Piquet
00:20:54there he is
00:20:56the second of those two cars
00:20:58the world champion
00:20:59who is having a thoroughly miserable year
00:21:01he has yet to score a world championship point in 1982
00:21:06and I can't think of a year in which the world champion
00:21:10is into the fifth race without a single point
00:21:13his turbo BMW car went off the course at Kyle Army in South Africa
00:21:19that was the first time it had been used
00:21:21after which
00:21:22the Brabham team switched to the Cosworth engine
00:21:25and this is only the second time it's been
00:21:27the BMW's been used
00:21:29now there is Alboreto
00:21:32there is Prost
00:21:34and Prost I think is going to be taken soon by Nelson Piquet
00:21:39seventh position Alain Prost
00:21:42eighth position therefore Piquet
00:21:44there's the Renault
00:21:46there is Piquet
00:21:48and a hard charger coming up behind Piquet
00:21:51it's Daley
00:21:53Derek Daley
00:21:54in the second of the two Williams cars
00:21:56the FW08
00:22:01and off
00:22:02I saw somebody
00:22:03I think he's headed for the pit
00:22:04oh no
00:22:05well look at the dust
00:22:06maybe he wasn't
00:22:07that was Prost
00:22:08yes the pit entrance is around there
00:22:10but it's hard to say whether that was a mistake
00:22:12Prost I was just going to say
00:22:14he's been developing a queue behind him
00:22:16yes it appears that he has gone into the pits
00:22:18yes there goes Prost
00:22:19into the pits
00:22:20he must have been in trouble
00:22:21because he was building up a big queue behind him
00:22:22which is a sure sign of course
00:22:23that the cars
00:22:24are slowing down
00:22:25going backwards through the field
00:22:26let's see what they're doing to it
00:22:27well they're giving him some fresh tyres
00:22:29that is routine of course
00:22:31in the pit stop
00:22:32to change the tyres
00:22:34we don't seem to have a very clear view of what's going on
00:22:37well the interesting thing is that once again
00:22:40we've had the situation
00:22:41and this is lap 18
00:22:43we have had the situation
00:22:45where the Renaults have been tremendously fast and impressive in practice
00:22:49whole and second fastest positions
00:22:52only to falter during the race
00:22:55now Prost had this situation in South Africa
00:22:58he came into the pits and took on tyres
00:23:01and it looked to me from the shortness of that pit stop
00:23:05that that was all he did here in Belgium
00:23:07and after he had taken on fresh tyres in Kaolami
00:23:11he drove an absolutely classic race
00:23:14on fresh rubber
00:23:15drove right through the field
00:23:17and finished in first place
00:23:20a quite incredible achievement
00:23:22yeah of course you have to remember in South Africa
00:23:24he had the great advantage of having much much more power than everybody else
00:23:29because of the altitude of the circuit
00:23:31with the turbocharged engine
00:23:32they could push through the normal
00:23:34inlet pressure that they want
00:23:37just by turning the wick up a bit
00:23:39whereas there's somebody making a mess
00:23:41I couldn't see whose back view that was
00:23:43but it appears without any damage or suffering
00:23:46so of course Prost in South Africa
00:23:48the turbo cars were just way faster than the others
00:23:50and it was a bit of a processional thing
00:23:53it was a bit of a ballgong conclusion
00:23:55it only made the race slightly interesting
00:23:57by going into the pits
00:23:59now Rosberg is closing up on a tail ender
00:24:03and Lauda looks closer to me than he did before
00:24:05and the tail ender is Raoul Vercel
00:24:07and Lauda is very definitely less than 3 seconds behind kicking Rosberg now
00:24:11and this will be his opportunity to close right up on the pin
00:24:16let us hope he is not balked by Raoul Vercel
00:24:19this is lap 19 in this 70 lap race
00:24:22so Rosberg is past Vercel
00:24:25and De Chetris is closing up on Lauda
00:24:27yes it's nice
00:24:28we've got our leading three
00:24:30are now concertina-ing together a little bit
00:24:32but unfortunately for our own excitement
00:24:35but very fortunate for Rosberg
00:24:37he's managed to get through past Vercel
00:24:39who I imagine must have moved over and let him through
00:24:41Lauda goes through successfully
00:24:47but Lauda had been inching closer
00:24:49for the last five laps or so
00:24:51let's see if now that he's
00:24:53in sort of striking distance
00:24:55whether he can get right up to his tail
00:24:58lap 20 out of 70
00:25:00and Keke Rosberg needs leads Nicky Lauda
00:25:03by the gap that you have seen
00:25:05in third position it is still
00:25:07Andrew De Cheseris in the Alfa Romeo
00:25:09and there are the first three
00:25:11and behind De Cheseris in fourth place
00:25:13it is Patrese
00:25:15then in fifth position it is Watson
00:25:17sixth is Alvaretto
00:25:19seventh is Daley
00:25:21and Elio De Angelis into the pits
00:25:23so that's both Lotuses
00:25:25both John Clare special cars into the pits
00:25:27Mansell out
00:25:29and this is very significant
00:25:31tyres are being changed
00:25:33yes it appears to be only tyres
00:25:35so that's one Goodyear user
00:25:37one Michelin user
00:25:39who have both been changed tyres
00:25:41whether that we are in a marginal tyre situation
00:25:45or not will remain to be seen
00:25:47but there go the leaders they look quite happy and healthy
00:25:49at the moment but of course
00:25:51as Murray says the significance of that is
00:25:53if some are having trouble with their tyres
00:25:55then it is quite possible that many others will
00:25:57and they are usually running
00:25:59most of the teams will be running a similar sort of compound
00:26:01the turbo cars of course are headier
00:26:03so they work their tyres a bit harder
00:26:05in Prost's case
00:26:07his car would be harder on tyres
00:26:09than the normally aspirated cars
00:26:11with their extra power and extra weight
00:26:13we join Zolder in pretty much the position that we left it
00:26:27the first three placings are
00:26:29Rosberg, Lauda, De Cesaris
00:26:31Watson very hard on the hills of Patrese
00:26:33I think it's only a matter of time before we see
00:26:35a change in position there
00:26:37I think the cars seem to be very equally balanced at the moment
00:26:41I think that Rosberg
00:26:43I noticed was sliding a little bit more than what he was
00:26:45at the beginning of the race
00:26:46now whether this is the tyres starting to go off or not
00:26:48time will tell
00:26:50but I reiterate what I said earlier on
00:26:52I think Lauda is in a perfect position
00:26:53he's pacing himself very well
00:26:55he's allowing the gap to be static
00:26:57keeping Rosberg on his toes
00:26:59and I think that we could see him make an attack
00:27:02very very shortly
00:27:03of course De Cesaris is in there as well
00:27:05so Lauda will have to be very careful
00:27:07that he doesn't hang back or relax too much
00:27:09otherwise you'll have young De Cesaris on his tail
00:27:11which is not a very good situation for any driver
00:27:13and now we rejoin back to Zolda to Murray Walker and James Hunt
00:27:16by thinking that he would go a lot quicker on new rubber
00:27:19seems to have been arrived
00:27:21Rosberg leads, there he goes
00:27:23there is Lauda
00:27:25this is De Cesaris
00:27:27there is Prost
00:27:29number 15
00:27:31Alain Prost
00:27:33rapidly seeing his chance of adding to his world championship points disappear
00:27:38and Nicky Lauda on the other hand
00:27:40now on lap 23
00:27:42has got the prospect of at least 6 points
00:27:46for this race
00:27:47if he can keep going
00:27:48and let's see where he is
00:27:50that was Rosberg through
00:27:51and Lauda scrambles past
00:27:54the arrows of Mark Surer
00:27:56and laps him in the process
00:27:58and if Lauda gets those 6 points
00:28:01it would make him equal
00:28:02with Alain Prost
00:28:03in the world championship at the head of it
00:28:05provided of course
00:28:06that Prost doesn't keep going
00:28:08and get a point or two himself
00:28:10so Surer there in the loop
00:28:14lap 24
00:28:15Keke Rosberg leads
00:28:17Nicky Lauda in 2nd position
00:28:19De Cesaris 3rd
00:28:20Patrese in 4th position
00:28:22Watson in 5th position
00:28:24and in the last world championship score point position
00:28:27Michele Alboreto
00:28:287th Daly
00:28:308th is Nelson Piquet
00:28:32and in 9th position
00:28:33Eddie Chiva
00:28:34Alain Prost in the pits again
00:28:37and Alain Prost out of the pits again
00:28:47it looks as though
00:28:48he's got absolutely fresh tyres on
00:28:50in which case
00:28:51he's going through them
00:28:52at an incredible rate
00:28:53yes
00:28:54maybe he's just doing a test session now
00:28:56I mean sometimes
00:28:57when one is out of the running for a race
00:29:00it would be not unknown
00:29:01for some teams
00:29:02to sort of start doing
00:29:03in and out of the pit stop
00:29:04just like in a testing session
00:29:05where you're changing things
00:29:06on the car
00:29:07and trying to get it right
00:29:08but I
00:29:09I got the impression
00:29:10that there was something more
00:29:11than just the tyres wrong
00:29:12with Prost's car
00:29:13I know he changed them
00:29:14when he went into the pits
00:29:15but that's
00:29:16fairly routine
00:29:17but he seemed to be
00:29:18generally slow
00:29:19and that's unlikely to be
00:29:20the tyres that would do that
00:29:21if you
00:29:22one would have expected
00:29:23if something was going wrong
00:29:24with the tyres
00:29:25he'd go quick
00:29:26quickly to start off with
00:29:27and then of course
00:29:28slow down
00:29:29in due course
00:29:30when the tyres started to wear
00:29:31or went off
00:29:32as they say
00:29:33but
00:29:34didn't seem to be that
00:29:350.8 seconds
00:29:36between Andrea de Cesaris
00:29:37in third place
00:29:38and Nicky Lauda
00:29:39who is second
00:29:40and about the same gap
00:29:42between Keke Rosberg
00:29:43the race leader
00:29:44and Lauda
00:29:45so
00:29:46there is
00:29:47in round figures
00:29:48five to six seconds
00:29:50covering the first three cars
00:29:52on lap 25
00:29:54in this 70 lap Belgian Grand Prix
00:29:56with
00:29:57I remind you
00:29:58Nigel Mansell
00:29:59Nigel Mansell
00:30:00out of the race
00:30:01René Arnoux
00:30:02who led at the beginning
00:30:04out of the race
00:30:05in the Renault
00:30:06Alain Prost
00:30:07out of the world championship
00:30:08points position
00:30:09Keke Rosberg
00:30:10leading
00:30:11in the first drive
00:30:12of the new Williams
00:30:14another Patrick headcar
00:30:16and there's a big big crowd in Belgium
00:30:26as we look at Andrea de Cesaris in third position
00:30:30this very young driver who is a very introverted man
00:30:35very very shy
00:30:36not at all anxious to speak to people or to be interviewed
00:30:39and he's out of the car and disappears
00:30:41as soon as it stops in practice
00:30:43there goes Lauda
00:30:44here comes de Cesaris
00:30:46they complete another lap
00:30:48and are therefore into their 26th lap
00:30:57they're lapping of course well outside the lap record now
00:31:02and that's Alboreto
00:31:03or Henton
00:31:04it's certainly one of the Tyrells
00:31:06it's Henton
00:31:07Brian Henton
00:31:08who got the second Tyrell drive
00:31:11after Slim Borgud
00:31:12has left the Tyrell team
00:31:14Henton drove for the Tyrell team at San Marino
00:31:18had trouble
00:31:19failed to complete even a single lap
00:31:21and he's done a lot better in this race
00:31:23in fact he was very well up in practice
00:31:26now look down
00:31:27there is the gap
00:31:28between the first and second place men
00:31:30and they are lapping in about
00:31:321 minute 22 seconds
00:31:35compared with the lap record
00:31:37of Jacques Lafitte
00:31:39which he put up in 1980
00:31:41that's just under 118 miles an hour
00:31:45so in today's terms
00:31:46it is a comparatively leisurely pace
00:31:49although let us not forget
00:31:51that with a long way in the race to go
00:31:54the fuel load is still pretty heavy
00:31:56and Keke Rosberg is extending his lead
00:31:59as Derek Warwick goes through in the Tolman
00:32:01there is Lauda second
00:32:03De Cesare is third
00:32:05and as an aside
00:32:07it's heartening that both the Tolman cars
00:32:11got through and into the race
00:32:15Derek Warwick and his team mate Teo Farby
00:32:18and here are Patrese and Watson
00:32:20now Patrese number two is in fourth position
00:32:23Watson is in fifth place therefore
00:32:25there is Elio De Angelis in the JPS
00:32:27and Michele Alboreto
00:32:29and behind that is Derek Daly
00:32:33so the order now
00:32:34lap 27
00:32:36it is still
00:32:37Rosberg leading
00:32:38Lauda second
00:32:39De Cesare is third
00:32:40Patrese fourth
00:32:41Watson fifth
00:32:42Alboreto sixth
00:32:43and Daly in seventh position
00:32:49Jack Lafitte
00:32:50and Eni Cheever
00:32:51both in Torban
00:32:52and Jack Lafitte goes through
00:32:54and takes his American team mate
00:32:58but his American team mate
00:33:00doesn't seem to like him very much
00:33:01yes he'd be battling away like Goodens don't they?
00:33:10this is the battle for ninth position actually
00:33:12with Jack Lafitte holding it at the present moment
00:33:15and a good old traffic jam going down to the chicane
00:33:19this left right left
00:33:21very very quick chicane
00:33:23which they go through in second gear
00:33:26change up into third
00:33:27Rosberg leads them
00:33:30after 27 laps that is
00:33:32and we are now on lap 28
00:33:35this is the best disorder
00:33:37of course the TV people in their infinite wisdom
00:33:38don't appear to put a camera down at the chicane
00:33:40the only shots we've had of it so far
00:33:42are from the helicopter
00:33:43and that's a place
00:33:45where there's traditionally plenty of action
00:33:47it's a good corner
00:33:48so one wonders what's come over them
00:33:50well we see them accelerating away to the chicane
00:33:57now what are we going to see next
00:33:59we see Brian Hinton
00:34:01and Piquet goes through
00:34:06there's the turbo
00:34:07Jack Lafitte is coming up
00:34:08then
00:34:09so we've got the prospect now
00:34:10of jolly Jack Lafitte
00:34:11number 25 in the Talbot
00:34:13with the wind in his sail
00:34:15catching the world champion
00:34:16in his only his second drive
00:34:18in the Brabham BMW Turbo
00:34:20and it looks as though Lafitte is shaping up
00:34:23to try and take the Brazilian
00:34:26as they come down towards the Boulderburg
00:34:28and that is where Alan Jones went off in 1981
00:34:33and convincingly lost the race
00:34:35fortunately they had a crane to get the car out of the way
00:34:38and a very one-legged Alan hopped over the Armco
00:34:41with a scalded leg
00:34:44there's the chicane
00:34:50that's the aerial shot
00:34:51over the brow of the hill
00:34:53onto the tail arm
00:34:57and that's Brian Hinton
00:34:59getting in the way of Nelson Piquet
00:35:02from Piquet's point of view
00:35:04with Lafitte and Cheever 9th and 10th
00:35:06so this is the 8th, 9th, 10th battle
00:35:08and Lafitte is through
00:35:09yes Hinton managed to get completely in everybody's way
00:35:13there as far as I can see
00:35:15and I don't think that Piquet will be a happy man about that
00:35:19because it cost him potentially the place
00:35:22there you are
00:35:23and he's got a bit boxed by Hinton
00:35:25who should have let them through earlier
00:35:27and really didn't drive in a very intelligent fashion at all
00:35:31not using his mirrors intelligently
00:35:32considering that he's been in the pits
00:35:34is therefore not part of that battle
00:35:36this is the order then
00:35:38as we watch the battle for 8th position
00:35:40between Piquet, Lafitte and Cheever
00:35:42and Piquet seems to have repassed
00:35:44Lafitte who's putting
00:35:46they're really battling away those three
00:35:48Lafitte putting a wheel on the grass
00:35:49I would think that Piquet probably got past on the straight
00:35:51with the power of his turbo
00:35:53going away from that hairpin
00:35:55lap 29 out of 70
00:35:59Keke Rosberg leads
00:36:01second Lauda
00:36:02third De Cesaris
00:36:04fourth Patrese
00:36:05fifth Watson
00:36:07sixth Albaretto
00:36:09seventh is Daly
00:36:11in eighth position is Nelson Piquet
00:36:13and let us now very quickly consider the world championship situation
00:36:17as that good old scrap goes down towards the chicane
00:36:20Alain Prost who leads the world championship is not in the points position at the moment
00:36:24Nikki Lauda who is second in the championship is second in the race
00:36:28Michele Albaretto
00:36:30third in the championship
00:36:31sixth in the race
00:36:32and Didier Pironi who is equal in the championship didn't start
00:36:37and Keke Rosberg who is fifth is in the lead
00:36:41there he goes
00:36:42fifth in the world championship in the lead in the race
00:36:45and he is on lap 30 out of 70
00:36:57Welcome back to the Belgium Grand Prix
00:36:59Rosberg still leading but a change in second place
00:37:02De Cesaris has passed Nikki Lauda and seems to be pulling away
00:37:05Lauda seems to be slowing slightly
00:37:07so whether it's tires or mechanical problems
00:37:09we yet don't know
00:37:10Patrese is still in there in fourth place
00:37:12with Watson
00:37:13still very close behind
00:37:15and I still maintain it will be a matter of time
00:37:17before Watson will get past Patrese
00:37:19the retirements up to date have been
00:37:21Giacomelli, Salazar, Arnu and Mansell
00:37:24so with that we return back to Zolder
00:37:26to Murray Walker and James Hunt
00:37:28and this could be a symptom of the tires getting a little bit worn
00:37:31or getting a little bit too hot
00:37:33or something like that
00:37:35John Watson has moved up into fourth place
00:37:37behind his team mate Lauda
00:37:40which means that Michele Alboreto has slipped down the field
00:37:46attrition is taking its toll now
00:37:50there is the second place man
00:37:52new second place man
00:37:54in the V12 Alfa Romeo
00:37:57having left last year's team
00:38:00Andrea De Cesaris
00:38:02was with the McLaren team last year
00:38:05now he's with Alfa
00:38:06there is Nikki Lauda
00:38:08sliding the car through the chicane
00:38:10and it looks rather less than 2.4 seconds
00:38:13indeed it is, it's just 2 seconds now
00:38:17but so Nikki Lauda has gained some of the gap
00:38:20incidentally on the right hand side of your picture
00:38:22you see Salazar's car
00:38:24and Giacomelli's car
00:38:26which you remember way down on the first lap
00:38:28as De Angelis goes through
00:38:30that was Chico Serra in the Fittipaldi car
00:38:33and now we're looking through the chicane
00:38:36at...
00:38:38Mark Shurer went through there
00:38:41and we are...
00:38:42the producer is obviously waiting for
00:38:44and that was Derek Warwick going off
00:38:46he wasn't waiting for that
00:38:48Derek Warwick in the Tolman or Farby
00:38:51going into the pits
00:38:53going...
00:38:54there's three chicanes on this circuit
00:38:56and that is the one at the end of the straight
00:38:58and into the pits
00:38:59and here is Nelson Piquet about to be lapped
00:39:03what ignominy
00:39:04by the Williams
00:39:06as they go through the chicane
00:39:08well the world championship
00:39:11the world champion
00:39:12is really having a very hard 1982
00:39:16he has now been lapped
00:39:18there goes
00:39:19Keke Rosberg through
00:39:21lapped is Nelson Piquet we are
00:39:23now on lap 33
00:39:25coming up to the half distance lap
00:39:27Keke Rosberg goes through
00:39:29now you can get a good look at the new Williams
00:39:31and compare it in your mind's eye
00:39:33those of you who
00:39:35know what the FW07 look like
00:39:38with the new car
00:39:40Keke Rosberg 33 years old
00:39:45very accomplished businessman
00:39:48as well as racing driver
00:39:50flies his own aeroplane
00:39:52has several homes in Europe and America
00:39:54but racing is very much his first love
00:40:01this is lap 34 that we are now on
00:40:07you are looking at Keke Rosberg the race leader
00:40:11if he stays in this position for the rest of this race
00:40:15we are going to have had a new world championship grand prix winner
00:40:19because that would be Rosberg's first win
00:40:22now he is coming up to Jean-Pierre Jarrier in the Ocella
00:40:26to lap him
00:40:28French driver
00:40:29Italian car
00:40:30which hasn't done at all well this season
00:40:33although marginally better than he did last season
00:40:38there goes Jarrier
00:40:39there is Rosberg
00:40:40into the straight
00:40:42another lap completed for Keke Rosberg
00:40:45and on lap 34
00:40:47the order
00:40:48is
00:40:49Rosberg first
00:40:50De Cesare second
00:40:52Lauda third
00:40:53Watson fourth
00:40:54in fifth position it is Patrese
00:40:57in sixth position it is Daley
00:40:59so
00:41:00both the Williams
00:41:01and both the McLaren cars
00:41:03are in the top six
00:41:05Keke Rosberg
00:41:07well
00:41:16Jarrier seems to be determined to keep Rosberg behind him
00:41:19Keke of course has actually got
00:41:22quite a lot of time to get past him
00:41:24although he won't want to waste too much of it
00:41:26because Rosberg has now got a good lead over Andrea de Cesare
00:41:31and he's passed Jarrier
00:41:33so now
00:41:35Jean-Pierre Jarrier
00:41:36is going to have to be passed by Andrea de Cesare
00:41:39and that could be quite exciting too
00:41:42it was about this time
00:41:44in the
00:41:45Long Beach race
00:41:46when Andrea de Cesare
00:41:48lost his concentration
00:41:50and he lost his concentration
00:41:52because he thought he saw the back of a car on fire
00:41:54which is not an unreasonable reason for losing concentration
00:41:57and he went into the wall
00:41:59let's hope nothing like that happens here
00:42:01Rosberg leads
00:42:03Jarrier has been lapped
00:42:05and Rosberg is coming up now to
00:42:09take the march of Raul Basel
00:42:12the Brazilian who has gone from Formula 4 to Formula 1 in two years
00:42:18lap 35
00:42:20just see Rosberg going past
00:42:26Basel again
00:42:28straightforward thing
00:42:29Basel was aware that he was there
00:42:30just let him through
00:42:31moved over quite correctly
00:42:32let him get on with his winning way
00:42:35this is the long long right hander up to the canal turn
00:42:41this gear absolutely flat in today's Grand Prix cars
00:42:45which are going faster and faster
00:42:49now that these skirts are back
00:42:51you will remember that there was an enormous contention last year
00:42:55over these skirts that enabled downforce to be maximised
00:42:59and the cars to get the most fantastic grip on the ground
00:43:03and in 1980 they were sliding skirts
00:43:071981 they were banned
00:43:09and that is Brian Hinton
00:43:11pulling off
00:43:12Brian Hinton in the candy tyrrel number 4
00:43:15the unfortunate Englishman who seems to be as unlucky in his way as Renny Arnoux is
00:43:21and it's a smoky old motor car
00:43:24and let's hope that that's not fire
00:43:26I wasn't vastly impressed with the Belgian marshals when I was watching in practice
00:43:31a lot of marshals, not many flags
00:43:34and a lot of interest in watching the race
00:43:37and not much interest in doing their job
00:43:39they seem to be getting down there now
00:43:41and one of them I see has got a fire extinguisher
00:43:44perhaps I'm aligning them
00:43:46we have missed Andrea Dichiseris on our chart
00:43:54where is it now?
00:43:56let's hope
00:43:57there's confirmation
00:43:59Nicky Lauda is back in second position
00:44:01Watson is up to third
00:44:02Patrasi to fourth
00:44:03Daley to fifth
00:44:04Chiva to sixth
00:44:05that means to say
00:44:06that the two McLaren cars are second and third
00:44:09the Williams cars are first and fifth
00:44:12there is one turbo in the first six
00:44:15and it is that of Riccardo Patrasi
00:44:18and Eddie Chiva for the first time in 1982
00:44:21is in the points in a Talbot
00:44:24unlike the Tyrrell which he drove last year
00:44:28well I wonder what could have happened to Andrea Dichiseris
00:44:31I was hypothesizing a moment ago
00:44:33that he may lose concentration at about this time of the race
00:44:38but that is a rather uncharitable thought
00:44:41and it's because we got so used to Dichiseris going off last year
00:44:44I'm a little mystified as to why we haven't seen him somewhere
00:44:50I imagine that if the producer had spotted him
00:44:53we would have had a shot
00:44:54but for whatever reason
00:44:56Andrea Dichiseris with his teammate Bruno Giacomelli
00:44:59out before the race has hardly even started
00:45:02is definitely out of the first six
00:45:05and the positions I say again
00:45:07on lap 38 out of 70
00:45:11is this man
00:45:13Keke Rosberg
00:45:14leading by a country mile
00:45:16metaphorically speaking now
00:45:17and he really has the problem now
00:45:20only of maintaining his concentration
00:45:24not losing it
00:45:25stroking the car home
00:45:27to win his first Grand Prix
00:45:29but there is almost as far to go as has gone already
00:45:39observe the very very wide track
00:45:42see how far the wheels of the car are set apart
00:45:45very squat and purposeful looking motor car
00:45:49with the very latest of the unbelievably successful
00:45:54Ford Cosworth V8 engines in it
00:45:56and if a car with that engine wins today
00:46:00it will be the 146th Grand Prix win
00:46:04and therefore by far the most successful engine
00:46:07in the history of Grand Prix racing
00:46:09Keke Rosberg completes his 30th lap
00:46:13look down the field to see who the second place man is
00:46:16and it should of course be the red and white McLaren of Nicky Lauda
00:46:20what an enormous lead Rosberg has
00:46:22an empty track
00:46:24that's a march
00:46:25there is Lauda
00:46:27and another march behind him
00:46:30Raoul Bussell is in front
00:46:32and Jochen Maas is behind
00:46:34and that is the second place man
00:46:36Nicky Lauda from Hope
00:46:38near Saltzberg
00:46:43world champion in 1975
00:46:45world champion in 1977
00:46:48both years in a Ferrari
00:46:49then he drove for Brabham
00:46:51became thoroughly disillusioned with racing in 1979
00:46:55calmly stepped out of the then brand new
00:46:59Brabham Ford Cosworth car in Montreal
00:47:02and said that's enough I've finished
00:47:04and was out of racing for two years
00:47:06what a comeback
00:47:08it's really a shame that we've got rather a processional race now
00:47:12the leaders have all spread out
00:47:13there's gaps between each of the first six cars
00:47:17and really nothing very much going on at all
00:47:21other than the four drivers out there
00:47:23all working very hard
00:47:24now of course they'll be starting to get tired
00:47:27it's still a mystery to us what's happened to De Cesaris
00:47:30which is rather a shame
00:47:31we'd like to know
00:47:32but there was no shot of him in the pits
00:47:34which makes me suspect that he's
00:47:36that he would have stopped on the circuit somewhere
00:47:39and we haven't seen him in the pits
00:47:41so I imagine either he's broken down
00:47:43or one hesitates to say it
00:47:45or there's also the strong possibility that he might have gone off the road somewhere
00:47:49as has traditionally been his wont
00:47:51but for his sake
00:47:53we certainly hope that that's not the case
00:47:55well John Watson is now within sight of Nicky Lauda
00:48:00and as he's coming up to take Raoul Bussell
00:48:03that's John Watson number seven
00:48:04last year's British Grand Prix winner
00:48:06that was the first time that the McLaren MP4 car had won
00:48:11and a very welcome return to the top of the roster
00:48:14and for John Watson
00:48:15well he's in third position
00:48:17there's a replay of him going through on the inside
00:48:20at the end of the straight
00:48:22and taking the Brazilian driver
00:48:24now he accelerates the way down to the chicane
00:48:26and there's Lauda disappearing
00:48:28Watson going towards the chicane
00:48:32and it will be very interesting to see
00:48:34what happens if
00:48:36in a few laps time
00:48:38John Watson who is in third position
00:48:40on lap 40 out of 70
00:48:42catches his teammate
00:48:44that man number eight Nicky Lauda
00:48:46Keke Rosberg still leads
00:48:48Lauda is second with De Cesaris missing
00:48:50Watson third
00:48:52Patrese in the turbo Brabham BMW
00:48:54fourth
00:48:55in fifth position number five
00:48:57Derek Daly
00:48:58and in sixth position
00:48:59still Eddie Cheever
00:49:00yes
00:49:01if Watson
00:49:02does catch
00:49:03Lauda
00:49:04which he certainly appears
00:49:05that he's going to do
00:49:06on his present rate of progress
00:49:08we could get an interesting situation
00:49:10I don't know
00:49:11what if any standing orders
00:49:13they have from the team
00:49:14about
00:49:15being in a Lyon-A-Stern situation
00:49:17but of course
00:49:18what the team will have to assess
00:49:20and Watson would have to assess
00:49:22if
00:49:23if for any reason
00:49:24they think
00:49:25he is capable of catching
00:49:26Rosberg
00:49:27then of course
00:49:28they've got to persuade Lauda
00:49:29to let him pass immediately
00:49:30so as not to halt his progress
00:49:31towards Rosberg
00:49:32so what we'll try and do
00:49:33is see if
00:49:34he is in fact
00:49:35closing on Rosberg as well
00:49:37the
00:49:44welcome back to the
00:49:45Belgium Grand Prix
00:49:46placings are
00:49:47Rosberg
00:49:48Lauda
00:49:49Watson
00:49:50Patrese and Daly
00:49:51interesting to note
00:49:52that PK's engine sounds to be running
00:49:54quite rough and I think it will only be
00:49:55a matter of time before he retires
00:49:57Daly's moved up into fifth position
00:50:00as I stated before
00:50:01which is a tremendous indictment
00:50:02for Patrick Head
00:50:03the engineer
00:50:04we have one FWA Williams
00:50:06leading the race
00:50:07and Daly in fifth position
00:50:08it's the first time out
00:50:09for both these new cars
00:50:10and I think they're doing
00:50:11a wonderful job
00:50:12we return you now
00:50:13back to Murray
00:50:14and James Hunt
00:50:15Rosberg's now looking very comfortable
00:50:30out in front
00:50:31he's got a clear track
00:50:34a clear back view
00:50:36with nobody immediately behind him
00:50:38and he must now be
00:50:39thinking of just keeping everything
00:50:40nice and steady
00:50:42his lead's the best
00:50:43getting on for 20 seconds now
00:50:44just to keep everything steady
00:50:46the usual thing
00:50:47shore up the position
00:50:49make no mistakes
00:50:50keep his concentration going
00:50:52and try and preserve
00:50:54both his
00:50:55the wear on himself
00:50:56physically
00:50:57and the wear on the tyres
00:50:58and everything else on the car
00:51:07go for the chicane
00:51:08it's getting a bit
00:51:09ah that is significant
00:51:10John Watson
00:51:11fastest
00:51:121 minute
00:51:1320.56
00:51:14which
00:51:15actually
00:51:16breaks the lap record
00:51:17so
00:51:18we have a new lap record
00:51:19albeit
00:51:20some 5 seconds slower
00:51:22than the fastest lap
00:51:23put up in practice
00:51:24by Alain Prost
00:51:26in the turbocharged Renault
00:51:28and there he is
00:51:29disappearing away from us
00:51:30so
00:51:31John Watson quickest
00:51:33and ah
00:51:34about 2 and a half seconds
00:51:35between
00:51:36Lauda and Watson
00:51:37Watson is the fastest man
00:51:39on the circuit
00:51:40at the present moment
00:51:41er
00:51:42it is possible
00:51:43and I'm
00:51:44I'm
00:51:45conjecturing again
00:51:46that
00:51:47Nicky Lauda
00:51:48is conserving
00:51:49his tyres
00:51:50in which case
00:51:52considering
00:51:53John Watson
00:51:54has the same make of tyre
00:51:55on his car
00:51:56there is
00:51:57er
00:51:58a rather surprising situation
00:51:59there
00:52:00because I can see no reason
00:52:01why Lauda's tyres
00:52:02should have gone off
00:52:03any more than Watson
00:52:04there is Lauda
00:52:05second
00:52:06and you saw Watson
00:52:07behind him
00:52:08er
00:52:09I think with his team mate
00:52:10right behind him
00:52:11he'd have to be very careful
00:52:12that
00:52:13wouldn't be preserving
00:52:14his tyres too hard
00:52:15I just think he'd be really
00:52:16giving it a go
00:52:17and obviously
00:52:18maybe that he didn't preserve
00:52:19them enough at the beginning
00:52:20of the race
00:52:21er
00:52:22and er
00:52:23they've won a little bit harder
00:52:24or faster than Watson's
00:52:25but Watson's looked good
00:52:26in this race throughout
00:52:27remember in the
00:52:28in the opening laps
00:52:29we spotted him
00:52:30er
00:52:31making good progress
00:52:32early on
00:52:33once a while
00:52:34to get through the field
00:52:35and he's always looks
00:52:36a bit sharper
00:52:37you join us on lap 45 of this brightly sunlit drive
00:52:40Belgian Grand Prix
00:52:41where the order is still kicking off
00:52:43you join us on lap 45 of this brightly sunlit drive Belgian Grand Prix where the order is still kicking off
00:52:48you join us on lap 45 of this brightly sunlit drive Belgian Grand Prix where the order is still Keki Rosberg in the lead
00:52:55Nicky Lauda is second John Watson is third Riccardo Patresi is fourth
00:53:02Riccardo Patresi is fourth Derek Daly is fifth and Eddie Cheever is in sixth position
00:53:06but there have been a lot of changes since then Nicky Lauda actually lost his second place to Andrea De Cesaris who was third when you left us on lap 13
00:53:13De Cesaris held that position for a long time but then mysteriously disappeared
00:53:26Riccardo and look at this now John Watson in third place is right up with Nicky Lauda who was third when you left us on lap 13
00:53:32De Cesaris held that position for a long time but then mysteriously disappeared Riccardo and look at this now John Watson in third place is right up with Nicky Lauda who is second
00:53:43yes John Watson is undoubtedly the man of the race at the moment he's come from quite a long way back
00:53:49he's just about towards his teammate Nicky Lauda but more important than that he is in fact closing albeit slowly on Keki Rosberg who is in the lead
00:53:59and this is the important thing because we're into a teammate situation and whatever their standing orders are
00:54:06he's now 19 seconds behind Rosberg but he's come he was 23 seconds behind only about 4 or 5 laps ago so he's catching Rosberg quite fast
00:54:15now Rosberg may not as yet know if his team have been giving him signals only to Lauda and therefore may be taking it easy in the lead
00:54:23so it will we will first of all we've got to make sure that Lauda is informed by his team to let Watson through
00:54:30because of the possibility of Watson winning the race so there could be no question of number 1 or number 2 here I wouldn't have thought
00:54:36and then of course it's a question of whether Rosberg can actually respond to this terrific charge being put on by John Watson
00:54:44and to bring you fully up to date as Watson visibly gains on Nicky Lauda
00:54:50let me quickly establish that Alain Prost who was 6th when you left us has slipped right down the field and is out of the world championship points situation
00:54:58and look at this Watson is now up and coming to try to take Nicky Lauda who is in second position
00:55:05this is the 46 lap race in this 70 lap race John Watson I remind you won the British Grand Prix in this same type of car last year
00:55:16down to the chicane and we could very soon be seen as Watson is now right up into Lauda's slipstream
00:55:21a new second place man
00:55:23I think Watson will have a go now but Lauda didn't help him through previously when he showed him his nose
00:55:27but there he goes does Nicky doesn't fight it and John Watson straight through into second place
00:55:33and now comes the interesting bit here's a bit of a replay
00:55:38which we missed we had a bit of a mess up there
00:55:40Belgian television are really not doing us very proud today with their service
00:55:44but er
00:55:46well Watson through and clearly pulling away from Nicky Lauda
00:55:51now we must watch very carefully to see whether the gap between Kiki Rosberg the race leader
00:55:57who has been in this situation since lap 1 diminishes
00:56:03so lap 47 and Kiki Rosberg in the Williams leads John Watson there he is in second place
00:56:10and Nicky Lauda in third and there's still a long way to go
00:56:14and off there that er
00:56:21never mind who that was because this is where the excitement of the race is
00:56:25and er
00:56:27Nicky Lauda has very clearly decided to give John Watson best
00:56:31so he's obviously in some sort of trouble
00:56:34and that caption of course is now wrong with Watson up into second place
00:56:39Patrese is still fourth, Daley fifth and Cheever sixth
00:56:43and as I have said before
00:56:45this means that both the McLaren cars and both the Williams cars are in the top six
00:56:50John Watson, number seven
00:56:52lives in London and er
00:56:55Bognor won two Grand Prix's in his long career
00:56:59he's one of the most experienced men in this race
00:57:02because this is believe it or not his 126th Grand Prix
00:57:07this Ulster man
00:57:09who's got one of the Arrows cars in front of him to lap
00:57:13down to the chicane
00:57:14now I hope they will let us see
00:57:16Rosberg and then Watson going through
00:57:19so that we can take the gap between them
00:57:21there's the Braven BMW
00:57:2319 seconds is the answer
00:57:27that is the gap that we've got to watch
00:57:29yes it does look as if Rosberg has steadied that gap
00:57:32whereas it was closing before
00:57:34I think he must have got the message from the pits
00:57:37that er
00:57:38Watson was coming through and closing on him
00:57:41and I think as I surmised earlier
00:57:44he's been able to step up the pace
00:57:46he was probably operating his speed
00:57:48to Lauda behind him
00:57:50who wasn't making any impression
00:57:52and er
00:57:53but we'll keep an eye
00:57:54a careful eye on that gap
00:57:55because er
00:57:56it may just be that
00:57:57that Watson can still keep closing
00:57:59Rosberg's looking a little bit twitchy
00:58:01going in
00:58:02into that right-hander there
00:58:03he was
00:58:04he didn't seem to get quite enough
00:58:05as much bite
00:58:06at the front
00:58:07and it may well be that er
00:58:08the tyres are
00:58:09getting a little bit worn now
00:58:11on everybody's cars
00:58:12and are beginning to struggle
00:58:13but er
00:58:14probably not for John Watson
00:58:15because he has recently
00:58:16in the last er
00:58:177 or 8 laps
00:58:18put up the fastest lap
00:58:19of the race so far
00:58:20what an incredible comeback
00:58:23John Watson has made
00:58:24in the last 2 years
00:58:25because there was a danger
00:58:27of him losing his job
00:58:28before last year
00:58:29with the McLaren team
00:58:31and he responded to that
00:58:33as we look at
00:58:34Keke Rosberg in the lead
00:58:35Watson responded
00:58:36by finishing 3rd in spades
00:58:382nd in France
00:58:39he won in Britain
00:58:402nd in Canada
00:58:416th in the World Championship
00:58:43and er
00:58:44this year
00:58:45he's been doing extremely well
00:58:47because in Brazil
00:58:49on the revised positions
00:58:50after the disqualifications
00:58:52John Watson finished in 2nd place
00:58:55and he's 5th equal
00:58:56in the Championship
00:58:57with Derek Daly
00:58:58at the present moment
00:58:59there is the race leader
00:59:00Rossberg
00:59:01now
00:59:02I er
00:59:04we're into
00:59:06lap 49
00:59:08lap 50 now
00:59:10that's er
00:59:115 7ths distance
00:59:12and I'm desperately watching
00:59:15in the hope
00:59:16that we will be able to see
00:59:17Rossberg
00:59:18and
00:59:19then
00:59:20the 2nd place man
00:59:21John Watson
00:59:22going through the same point
00:59:23so that I can give you
00:59:24the gap in time
00:59:25between them
00:59:26and see how it compares
00:59:28with that 19 seconds
00:59:29but
00:59:30on lap 50
00:59:31it is
00:59:32Rossberg leading
00:59:34Watson 2nd
00:59:35Lauda 3rd
00:59:36Patrese 4th
00:59:38Daly in 5th position
00:59:40Cheever in 6th place
00:59:41Jacques Lafitte in 7th place
00:59:43and the leader
00:59:45Keke Rosberg
00:59:46has lapped
00:59:47everybody up to
00:59:48Jacques Lafitte
00:59:49who is 7th
00:59:50followed by
00:59:51the lapped
00:59:52Elio De Angelis
00:59:53in 8th position
00:59:54and in 9th position
00:59:56is
00:59:57Jochen Maas
00:59:58in the march
01:00:01lap 50
01:00:02now
01:00:07there is Lafitte
01:00:08followed by
01:00:09Rossberg
01:00:13Lafitte in 7th place
01:00:14in the V12 Talbot
01:00:16the car which he says
01:00:17is too old
01:00:18too slow
01:00:19too heavy
01:00:21and
01:00:22Rossberg is through
01:00:23we didn't see it
01:00:24but Rossberg
01:00:25has passed him
01:00:26at the
01:00:27chicane entry
01:00:28to the
01:00:29finishing straight
01:00:30the jacket
01:00:31she came
01:00:32and Rossberg
01:00:33is now into
01:00:34his
01:00:3551st lap
01:00:36I look at
01:00:37the tyres
01:00:38they look good
01:00:39Rossberg is
01:00:40taking
01:00:41the same line
01:00:42all the way round
01:00:46this very determined
01:00:47finished driver
01:00:49yes he does seem
01:00:50to be well in command
01:00:51he seems
01:00:52so far
01:00:53from last
01:00:54following of the gap
01:00:55to have responded
01:00:56very much
01:00:57very much to
01:00:58Watson's
01:00:59little charge
01:01:00he came through
01:01:01he's lifted up
01:01:02his own speed a bit
01:01:03and the gap is still
01:01:04hovering around the
01:01:0519 second mark
01:01:06so
01:01:07Rossberg
01:01:08has
01:01:09met the challenge
01:01:10very easily
01:01:11and
01:01:12it looks
01:01:13it doesn't all go
01:01:14well for us to get
01:01:15an exciting
01:01:16grandstand finish
01:01:17I'm afraid
01:01:18Katie Rossberg
01:01:19number 6
01:01:20that we're looking at now
01:01:21is of course
01:01:22the man who took
01:01:23the seat in the wolf team
01:01:24that James Hunt vacated
01:01:25so maybe James you could
01:01:27have been leading the
01:01:28Belgian Grand Prix
01:01:29if you'd stayed on
01:01:30well that's
01:01:31that's
01:01:32that's a fairly abstruse
01:01:33bit of rationale
01:01:34Murray
01:01:35but I'm much happier
01:01:36sitting here
01:01:37sitting here watching it
01:01:38there Keke is a
01:01:39very good driver
01:01:40that was his first break
01:01:41in Formula 1
01:01:42he did an excellent job
01:01:43in an extremely bad car
01:01:44in the wolf team
01:01:45there he's just
01:01:46going past a tail end
01:01:47it was a very poor car
01:01:48indeed
01:01:49which is one reason
01:01:50that I got out halfway
01:01:51through the season
01:01:52he did a competent job
01:01:53very well indeed
01:01:54and thoroughly deserved
01:01:56the break that he got
01:01:57when Alan Jones
01:01:58retired at the end
01:01:59of the last year
01:02:00and he was brought
01:02:01into the Williams team
01:02:03and has surprised nobody
01:02:06that knew a lot
01:02:08about racing
01:02:09in that he's up front
01:02:10and winning
01:02:11he's in probably
01:02:12the best car
01:02:13in the business
01:02:14it was Patrick Head
01:02:15designed car
01:02:16and he's well competent
01:02:19to deliver the best performance
01:02:21from it
01:02:22this is
01:02:23looks like another
01:02:24tour de force
01:02:25for the quite incredible
01:02:26Williams team
01:02:27who produce
01:02:29the most reliable motor cars
01:02:31in Grand Prix racing
01:02:33and there is Frank Williams
01:02:35and Peter Collins
01:02:37with the clipboard
01:02:38the team manager
01:02:39as Riccardo Patrese goes through
01:02:42Reutemann last year
01:02:44actually
01:02:46over a couple of seasons
01:02:48did 15 consecutive races
01:02:51and finished in the world championship points
01:02:54a quite unparalleled achievement
01:02:56in his Williams
01:02:57Alan Jones of course
01:02:59was world champion in 1981
01:03:01won his last race
01:03:03at Caesars Palace
01:03:05at Las Vegas
01:03:06all thanks not only to the
01:03:08driving brilliance of Reutemann and Jones
01:03:10and we're looking by the way
01:03:12at Eddie Cheever
01:03:13who is in sixth position
01:03:14at all
01:03:15but also to the reliability
01:03:16of the Williams
01:03:17which seems to be showing up again
01:03:19with not only
01:03:21Keke Rosberg
01:03:22in the lead
01:03:23but with Derek Daley
01:03:25number five
01:03:26in fifth position
01:03:27Derek Daley
01:03:28in his first race
01:03:29in the Williams
01:03:30so there's
01:03:31three firsts as it were
01:03:32at the present moment
01:03:33two first appearances
01:03:35of the 08 Williams cars
01:03:37and the first appearance
01:03:39of Derek Daley
01:03:40in that car
01:03:41and the Irishman
01:03:42has at last
01:03:43got the break
01:03:44that he has
01:03:45so richly deserved
01:03:46for so long
01:03:47and there he is
01:03:48that is Derek Daley
01:03:49that was Derek Daley
01:03:51Jack Lafitte
01:03:53Eddie Cheever
01:03:54Eddie Cheever
01:04:03well there is Daley
01:04:04pulling away
01:04:05from Mark Surer
01:04:06and from Eddie Cheever
01:04:07well John Watson
01:04:08has now made a bit
01:04:09of an impression
01:04:10on the gap
01:04:11to Keke Rosberg
01:04:12and he's reduced it
01:04:13down to 16 seconds
01:04:15however I suspect
01:04:17that he's not reducing it
01:04:18quite fast enough
01:04:19we've got 17-18 laps to go
01:04:21so he's really got
01:04:22to be hauling
01:04:23Rosberg in
01:04:24at about a second
01:04:25a lap
01:04:26and that he isn't
01:04:27doing yet
01:04:31well it's a long way
01:04:32from being over
01:04:33as far as
01:04:34Keke Rosberg
01:04:35is concerned
01:04:36as Eddie Cheever
01:04:37comes up to take
01:04:38Mark Surer
01:04:40Mark Surer
01:04:41incidentally
01:04:42in the orange car
01:04:43there the Arrows
01:04:44driving his first
01:04:45Grand Prix
01:04:46since South Africa
01:04:47when he broke
01:04:48both his ankles
01:04:49as he did in last
01:04:50year's South African
01:04:51Grand Prix
01:04:52and I would imagine
01:04:53that Mark is dreading
01:04:54next year's Kyle Armie
01:04:55at the rate that he's
01:04:56destroying himself
01:04:57in South Africa
01:04:58but he's quite fit
01:04:59again now
01:05:00finds it easier
01:05:01to drive
01:05:02than to walk
01:05:03and we're looking down
01:05:05on a fairly empty circuit
01:05:07but it gives you a good idea
01:05:08of what Zolder is like
01:05:09and that is a Brabham BMW
01:05:11and it must therefore
01:05:12be Patrese's car
01:05:13I think I saw Patrese walking away
01:05:14yes
01:05:15the white helmet there
01:05:16that looks like it's in the fencing
01:05:18rather than the breakdown
01:05:19it's rather hard to see
01:05:20from this angle
01:05:21but it does look to be
01:05:23well this is lap 54
01:05:25and with Patrese
01:05:27number 2
01:05:28out of the running
01:05:29that means to say
01:05:30somebody else went off then
01:05:31somebody speaking
01:05:32and that was the other Brabham
01:05:33that's Piquet
01:05:34well the Brabham's are really
01:05:35hitting trouble on this lap
01:05:36Piquet not in the World Championship
01:05:37points running of course
01:05:39but with Patrese
01:05:40out of the running
01:05:41that means to say
01:05:42that Derek Daly
01:05:43in his first race
01:05:44in the Williams
01:05:45in the World Championship
01:05:46well thinking about that
01:05:47they can't have been too far
01:05:48from piling into each other
01:05:49Piquet didn't miss
01:05:50Patrese's parked car
01:05:51by very much at all
01:05:52and that would have been
01:05:53a somewhat spectacular way
01:05:55for the two team to finish
01:05:56and separate accidents
01:05:57parked against each other
01:05:58but anyway
01:05:59Piquet just as he was
01:06:00went down the grass
01:06:01made lots of fuss and bother
01:06:02but managed to keep
01:06:03get it going again
01:06:04lap 54
01:06:07Keke Rosberg
01:06:08is leading John Watson
01:06:10by 16 seconds
01:06:11Niki Lauda
01:06:12is in third position
01:06:13Derek Daly
01:06:15comes up to fourth place
01:06:16Eddie Cheever
01:06:17is in fifth position
01:06:28With 13 laps to go
01:06:29we have Rosberg leading
01:06:30Watson moved up into second
01:06:32Lauda third
01:06:33Daly fourth
01:06:34and Eddie Cheever
01:06:35in fifth position
01:06:36for the Talbot Ligier team
01:06:37The retirements up to date
01:06:39have been
01:06:40Giacomelli
01:06:41Salazar
01:06:42Anu
01:06:43Mansell
01:06:44Henton
01:06:45and De Cesaris
01:06:46Patrese has just spun out
01:06:47as you saw
01:06:48and nearly joined by his
01:06:49teammate Piquet
01:06:50who I think was having a good
01:06:51look at Patrese's crash
01:06:52and nearly went off himself
01:06:54I think the situation now
01:06:56is almost a fait accompli
01:06:58I think that barring any
01:06:59mechanical problems
01:07:00Rosberg is going to win
01:07:01his first Grand Prix
01:07:02and I sincerely hope so
01:07:05to be a fantastic debut
01:07:06for the new Williams
01:07:08We now return you back
01:07:09to Murray and James
01:07:10miserable about the motor car
01:07:12extremely unhappy
01:07:13because he has won several
01:07:15Grand Prix's
01:07:16in what was
01:07:17the Ligier
01:07:18and is now the Talbot
01:07:20as we look down
01:07:21the absolutely clear
01:07:22finishing straight
01:07:23with the knowledge
01:07:24that Keke Rosberg
01:07:25the race leader
01:07:26is on lap 57
01:07:28still followed by John Watson
01:07:30in second place
01:07:31with a 16 second gap
01:07:32between them
01:07:33Nicky Lauda
01:07:34is still third
01:07:35Daly is still fourth
01:07:36Cheever is still fifth
01:07:37and there was Cheever
01:07:38and there is Nelson Piquet
01:07:40who has regained the circuit
01:07:42this is Piquet
01:07:43the world champion
01:07:44and he once again
01:07:45is going to score
01:07:46no points
01:07:47in the fifth Grand Prix
01:07:48of 1982
01:07:58Daly
01:08:03and Cheever
01:08:05well this is interesting
01:08:07because
01:08:08now
01:08:09Eddie Cheever
01:08:10in the Talbot
01:08:11is right with
01:08:12Derek Daly
01:08:13and we could be seeing
01:08:14a change for fifth position
01:08:15there it is
01:08:16there's the battle
01:08:17between the Williams
01:08:18and
01:08:19the Talbot
01:08:20the Williams on the right
01:08:21in fifth place
01:08:22driven by Irishman
01:08:23Derek Daly
01:08:24then
01:08:25Italo-American driver
01:08:26in the red and white helmet
01:08:29Eddie Cheever
01:08:30in the Talbot
01:08:31this is the battle
01:08:32for fifth position
01:08:33it is the only battle
01:08:34of any significance
01:08:35on the circuit
01:08:36and they're coming up
01:08:37to lap
01:08:38Chico Serra
01:08:39who just got into the race
01:08:42well
01:08:43the gap
01:08:44between the first
01:08:45and second place
01:08:46is now down to
01:08:4712 seconds
01:08:48with 13 laps to go
01:08:49so Watson
01:08:50is just about
01:08:51on schedule
01:08:52at reducing
01:08:53the gap
01:08:54a second a lap
01:08:55so it very much depends
01:08:56whether this is
01:08:57a ploy
01:08:58as it were
01:08:59by
01:09:00Kiki Rosberg
01:09:01just to slow down
01:09:02and to win
01:09:03by a couple of seconds
01:09:04in the end
01:09:05or whether he's
01:09:06Watson's
01:09:07cars in better conditions
01:09:08towers are working better
01:09:09because he's certainly
01:09:10driven a
01:09:11marvellous race
01:09:12and is quite
01:09:13comfortably
01:09:14the leading
01:09:15protagonist on the circuit
01:09:16and lots of fun
01:09:17and games there
01:09:18as they go past
01:09:19the back marker
01:09:20with Cheever not being able
01:09:21to take advantage
01:09:22of the situation
01:09:23Daly's neck
01:09:24having a go
01:09:25and he's caught
01:09:26Daly up
01:09:27from another way behind
01:09:28and he's getting quicker
01:09:29so he's going to be
01:09:30trying hard to get round him
01:09:33yes
01:09:34V12
01:09:35Talbot
01:09:36versus V8
01:09:37Williams
01:09:38Williams
01:09:39Williams still leads
01:09:40Derrick Daly
01:09:42of course
01:09:43and very naturally
01:09:44determined
01:09:45to exploit
01:09:46this wonderful opportunity
01:09:48that he has been given
01:09:49by Frank Williams
01:09:51to complete the season
01:09:52in the Williams car
01:09:53and hopefully to go on
01:09:54and drive it next year
01:09:55because this has to be
01:09:57the plum drive
01:09:58that Derrick Daly
01:09:59has been trying for
01:10:00in fourth position
01:10:02chased by fifth place man
01:10:03Eddie Cheever
01:10:04in the blue Talbot
01:10:06and the new sixth place man
01:10:08Elio De Angelis
01:10:09has of course
01:10:10been lapped
01:10:11by the race leader
01:10:12Kiki Rosberg
01:10:13and we are on
01:10:14lap 59
01:10:15Daly
01:10:16Cheever
01:10:17and fifth
01:10:18completing the lap
01:10:22eight laps completed
01:10:23by those two
01:10:36Williams leads
01:10:37McLaren second
01:10:38McLaren third
01:10:40Williams in fourth place
01:10:41Talbot in fifth place
01:10:43those of course
01:10:44being the cars
01:10:45the drivers here
01:10:46fourth and fifth
01:10:47still Derrick Daly
01:10:48and Eddie Cheever
01:10:50and Eddie Cheever
01:10:51number 25
01:10:52is
01:10:5325 years old
01:10:55and
01:10:56has
01:10:57no less than
01:10:5850
01:10:59Formula 2 races
01:11:00behind him
01:11:01and I can tell you
01:11:02that there is
01:11:03the prospect
01:11:04of
01:11:05a battle developing
01:11:06for the lead
01:11:07before this race
01:11:08is over
01:11:09because the gap
01:11:10between
01:11:11Kiki Rosberg
01:11:12and John Watson
01:11:13fighting for
01:11:14first position
01:11:15is down to
01:11:16ten seconds
01:11:17and they are on
01:11:18lap 60
01:11:19and it's a 70 lap race
01:11:20so you can draw your own
01:11:21conclusions from that
01:11:22still we look at Derrick Daly
01:11:26followed by Eddie Cheever
01:11:28followed by Eddie Cheever
01:11:29followed by Eddie Cheever
01:11:30followed by Eddie Cheever
01:11:31followed by Eddie Cheever
01:11:33now watch them come through the chicane
01:11:34and then to
01:11:35into the straight
01:11:36to compete another lap
01:11:37and this will be the end of
01:11:39their 60th lap
01:11:40well we are wisely staying with this
01:11:43well we are wisely staying with this
01:11:47but all the time
01:11:48while I talk to you
01:11:49and while you watch this picture
01:11:51remember that John Watson
01:11:54is remorselessly chewing away
01:11:58at the lead that Kiki Rosberg has got
01:12:00theoretically it is at a rate
01:12:03which could enable him just to win the race
01:12:05but who knows how much
01:12:07Rosberg has got in reserve
01:12:09and how much he is sandbagging
01:12:11well certainly for sure
01:12:13neither of these two are
01:12:14no Cheever is a little bit closer this time
01:12:16he's pulled out to have a look
01:12:18as he goes out of sight there
01:12:19but he doesn't seem to be really getting
01:12:22into position
01:12:23and Watson has just gone by
01:12:26now only 8 seconds behind Rosberg
01:12:29so he is catching
01:12:30now as Rosberg is going to respond
01:12:32to this charge
01:12:33he better respond pretty soon
01:12:34otherwise we have got to assume
01:12:35that he is doing the best that he can
01:12:37and that Watson is genuinely catching him
01:12:39but it is going to look very marginal
01:12:41because of course
01:12:42the old problem comes up
01:12:43it is one thing catching him
01:12:44it is another thing to pass
01:12:45and he is only going to have
01:12:47a lap or two to do it in
01:12:48at the present rate of progress
01:12:50meanwhile Cheever has got his hands full
01:12:53trying to get past Daly
01:12:54who is a pretty hard
01:12:56competent driver
01:12:57and won't make it easy for Cheever to pass
01:12:59at the moment
01:13:00Cheever really looks a bit bereft of ideas
01:13:02to find the way round
01:13:04well they have completed their 60th lap
01:13:06which means of course
01:13:08that they and the leaders
01:13:09are on their 61st
01:13:10as we see Derek Warwick
01:13:12in the Tolman
01:13:13come down towards us
01:13:14and there is Nelson Piquet
01:13:16the world champion
01:13:17and that is the
01:13:18down there is Derek Daly
01:13:20so clearly
01:13:21Cheever has harried him off the course
01:13:23I am not suggesting for one moment
01:13:25that he pushed him off
01:13:27but Derek Daly was absolutely at 10 tenths
01:13:30no doubt about that
01:13:31and he has lost the car
01:13:33at a point I can't identify
01:13:35in that close picture
01:13:36as Watson goes through
01:13:37now Watson therefore
01:13:39is on his 62nd lap
01:13:41and we are waiting for the next car
01:13:42which should be Nicky Lauda
01:13:44so there is only one Williams left in the race
01:13:47and it's that one
01:13:48that is Keke Rosberg
01:13:49the race leader on lap 62
01:13:51out of 70
01:13:537 seconds only is the gap
01:13:55and very soon John Watson will be able
01:13:58on some parts of the course
01:14:00to see the man that he's got to catch
01:14:02and there is a bitterly disappointed Derek Daly
01:14:05helmet off
01:14:06walking home
01:14:07to explain to Frank Williams
01:14:09and Patrick Head
01:14:10what went wrong
01:14:12I don't think I would like to be part of that interview very much
01:14:16but there is a man for whom touch wood
01:14:19nothing has gone wrong in this race
01:14:21the race leader
01:14:23and that is Keke Rosberg
01:14:25and that means that
01:14:27up into sixth position now
01:14:29comes Jochen Maas
01:14:31well lapped of course
01:14:33but nevertheless
01:14:34in with a world championship point
01:14:36and he is behind
01:14:37the fifth place man
01:14:38Elio De Angelis
01:14:39the fourth place man
01:14:41Cheever
01:14:42the third place man
01:14:43Lauda
01:14:44the second place man
01:14:45Watson
01:14:46and that man the leader
01:14:47Keke Rosberg
01:14:48who is on his 62nd lap
01:14:50welcome back
01:15:00and there is an interesting situation developing
01:15:02with John Watson
01:15:03slowly catching Keke Rosberg
01:15:04who is still leading the Belgium Grand Prix
01:15:06Lauda is still in third place
01:15:07Chief has moved up to fourth
01:15:09with the demise of Derek Daly
01:15:11and De Angelis is now in fifth place
01:15:13I return you back
01:15:14there are now six laps to go
01:15:27and John Watson is within six seconds of Keke Rosberg
01:15:30who has just gone through
01:15:31now the next man into our shop should be
01:15:33and it is
01:15:34John Watson in second place
01:15:36ahead of his teammate Nicky Lauda
01:15:38and therefore at the rate Watson is catching Rosberg
01:15:42he could still win the Belgian Grand Prix
01:15:46now Rosberg has got to catch and take these tail enders
01:15:49with those six laps to go
01:15:51and the two tail enders include
01:15:54eight seconds is the gap at that point
01:15:58according to that timing
01:16:00but we make it much closer than that
01:16:02six seconds at the end of the lap
01:16:04that'll be a couple of laps
01:16:05although not very quickly
01:16:06flashing that information
01:16:07we just timed it at six
01:16:10and I think Rosberg's responded a little bit
01:16:13in that the gap isn't coming down quite as fast
01:16:16so he may yet fend Watson off
01:16:19it's going to be a very close run thing
01:16:20but Watson's certainly driving an absolutely magnificent race
01:16:23and it's really heartening to see him having such a good Grand Prix
01:16:27because it's been a pretty bad period with McLarens
01:16:30he stuck with them
01:16:31they stuck with him
01:16:32but things were quite miserable in the McLaren team for a couple of years
01:16:35and it's now everything's come back
01:16:38Nicky Lauda's arrival has rejuvenated it
01:16:41and the response has been magnificent in Watson
01:16:43there he goes
01:16:44less than four seconds
01:16:45I timed it there
01:16:46and John Watson is really gaining on Kiki Rosberg
01:16:49Rosberg was undoubtedly held up getting past Chico Serra
01:16:53now he's got to get past Nelson Piquet
01:16:56but by the same token
01:16:57John Watson has got to get past Chico Serra
01:17:00there is Serra
01:17:01there is Watson
01:17:02we are on lap 66 in this 70 lap race
01:17:08Rosberg's looking very tired
01:17:09I think I could see his head lolling about a little bit there
01:17:11which won't help
01:17:12he's got the turbo in front of him
01:17:13he's not letting him through
01:17:14with Piquet or wasn't there
01:17:16so it's all coming to a bit of a fraught finish for Rosberg
01:17:19because I would think he would be very
01:17:21I'd expect him to be very tired by now
01:17:23on this pretty demanding circuit
01:17:26four and a half laps to go
01:17:27there is Watson coming up to Serra
01:17:29is Serra going to let him through?
01:17:31the lucky thing for Watson
01:17:32is that he's got the straight in front of him
01:17:33as he caught Serra
01:17:34so he's gone straight past him anyway
01:17:36so that worked out very well for John
01:17:38John Watson
01:17:39his 126th Grand Prix
01:17:41he has two Grand Prix victories behind him
01:17:43Kiki Rosberg that we are looking at as none
01:17:47now we
01:17:49I won't say we don't need a stopwatch
01:17:51because we certainly do
01:17:52but it is for sure that John Watson can see Kiki Rosberg
01:17:56and that he knows who he is catching
01:17:58and that if he can catch and pass him
01:18:00and look how much closer he is to him now
01:18:02he will win the Belton Grand Prix
01:18:04lap 66
01:18:05yes let's hope
01:18:06he should be alright with Piquet for lapping in
01:18:08because Piquet is a very experienced driver
01:18:10and will therefore understand and know the situation that's going on
01:18:14he will have spotted that he's dealing with the battle for the lead
01:18:16so hopefully he'll get out of the way and let Watson through
01:18:192.92 seconds is the gap and they go into lap 67
01:18:25and John Watson remember has caught and passed his teammate Nicky Lauda
01:18:32and they are equal number one drivers
01:18:35he is now right up with Kiki Rosberg
01:18:38and it was 2.92 seconds when they started this lap
01:18:42we will be able to watch them and give you the gap
01:18:44but for sure it's going to be visual very soon
01:18:47yes I think it's visual already
01:18:49Watson's Piquet is good
01:18:51he let Watson right through
01:18:52there you are that's Rosberg just in front down the straight
01:18:54so it's all down to the last charge for the line
01:18:59lap 67
01:19:00Rosberg leads
01:19:01Watson gaining
01:19:02Lauda is in third position
01:19:04in fourth place it is Eddie Cheever
01:19:06in fifth place it is Elio De Angelis
01:19:08in sixth position Nelson Piquet
01:19:11three laps behind
01:19:13but still in with a world championship point
01:19:15and that would be his first of 1982
01:19:18here's the leader
01:19:20Rosberg
01:19:22Watson
01:19:232.5 seconds
01:19:26Watson has taken nearly half a second out of Rosberg's lead
01:19:30since I last timed them
01:19:32this is lap 67 coming up to the end of it
01:19:3580 lap race
01:19:37the leaders first and second together
01:19:39long way ahead of Nicky Lauda third
01:19:41Eddie Cheever fourth
01:19:42Elio De Angelis fifth
01:19:44Nelson Piquet
01:19:45in sixth position
01:19:46and in seventh place incidentally is Chico Serra
01:19:52the man that they have just lapped
01:19:54I should think four laps behind them
01:19:56that's how quickly the leaders are going in comparison
01:19:59with the men behind them
01:20:01lap 68
01:20:04Rosberg
01:20:09Watson
01:20:11and now Rosberg and Watson are both closing up on somebody that they are going to lap
01:20:18and this could be a problem for one or both of them
01:20:21well of course the problem
01:20:23the disadvantage always rests with the guy in the lead
01:20:25because he's the only person with anything to lose if they do get to trouble with back markers
01:20:28but there goes Rosberg safely round one of them
01:20:31but there's a bit of traffic in front
01:20:33Watson still very close behind but not quite close enough yet
01:20:37he needs a little bit of help to get enough time to pass
01:20:42and Watson has passed
01:20:44Raoul Bursell again
01:20:46that was the man that
01:20:48Keke Rosberg passed
01:20:50and now Watson is tackling Eddie Cheever and he's passed him
01:20:53it's going to be an absolutely terrific
01:20:55terrific
01:20:56last couple
01:20:57last two laps
01:20:58they're coming into lap 69 now
01:21:02the gap is 0.97 seconds
01:21:06less than one second
01:21:09in this unexpectedly tremendously exciting finish to the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix
01:21:15and there is no doubt at all about the fact that Keke Rosberg will now be a worried man
01:21:24but he has a considerable amount of experience
01:21:26on the other hand John Watson has got even more
01:21:28and he's now right up with him
01:21:30yes Watson is now in a position to attempt to overtake
01:21:34and Rosberg you can see is taking the left hand side of the straight
01:21:37to make sure that he has the inside line where they turn into the chicane at the end
01:21:41he's kept that all in one piece but Watson will be looking for ways round
01:21:46but I think Rosberg has the experience and the lack of inhibition
01:21:50to blatantly block for this time
01:21:52I think that it would be a poor effort if he let Watson pass
01:21:56this circuit is not conducive to overtaking
01:21:59two laps to go
01:22:00but this is where Watson should be attacking
01:22:03but he's dropped back a bit
01:22:04he wasn't really in position to attack there for some reason
01:22:07down to the boulder bird
01:22:09and off goes Rosberg and Watson is through
01:22:12change of lead
01:22:13Rosberg goes out
01:22:14hits the kerbing at the side
01:22:17and now as the crowd waves
01:22:19let's have a look at it again
01:22:20Rosberg out
01:22:21let's see where Rosberg stepped out
01:22:23yes well he came in too quick there Murray
01:22:26and that really was I have to say
01:22:27a very very poor piece of driving by Rosberg
01:22:30under pressure
01:22:31as I was saying it was going to be very difficult for him to
01:22:34for Watson to pass if he blocked properly
01:22:37the one thing when you're blocking somebody you don't have to do is to drive fast
01:22:40there was absolutely no reason for Rosberg to arrive fast into the chicane
01:22:44they're on
01:22:45Watson's now on his last lap
01:22:46a formality
01:22:47to compete now it should be
01:22:49and Rosberg must be kicking himself
01:22:51but that was a blatant mistake
01:22:53as a result of implying completely the wrong tactics
01:22:56there was no reason for him to be trying to go fast
01:22:58which is what happened
01:22:59and he should have just been concentrating on keeping a clean line
01:23:02keeping in front of Watson on the streets
01:23:04well
01:23:05Rosberg tapped his helmet for some reason
01:23:07whether it was to say I need my brains testing
01:23:09or whether he's very tired I know not
01:23:12it makes no difference
01:23:13because on the very last lap
01:23:15John Watson is on his way
01:23:18to his third world championship victory
01:23:21in his long career
01:23:23after having won in Britain last year
01:23:26and having won in Austria way back in 1976
01:23:31this is going to be the third Grand Prix victory
01:23:34for the Marlborough MP4 car
01:23:37the McLaren car
01:23:38and there's a disconsolate
01:23:40Rosberg coming through
01:23:42and now John Watson is within sight of that chequered flag
01:23:45he's going down the finishing street
01:23:47and the Belgian Grand Prix has been won by John Watson
01:23:51with where is he
01:23:52Kiki Rosberg
01:23:53yes in second position across the line
01:23:56and then behind him
01:23:58we haven't seen Lauda for a long time
01:24:00should be Lauda in third position
01:24:02with Eddie Cheever fourth
01:24:04Elio De Angelis in fifth place
01:24:06and in sixth position world champion Nelson Piquet
01:24:12but Watson waving to the crowd
01:24:15and he must be delighted
01:24:17yes a marvellous race by John Watson
01:24:19because you have to remember
01:24:20that if he qualified a bit further up the grid
01:24:22he wouldn't have been that far behind in the first place
01:24:24because all that time that he lost
01:24:26and had to come from so far behind
01:24:29was because of course
01:24:30he started well down the grid
01:24:32and terrific stuff
01:24:34he caught he kept pressing on and on and on
01:24:36when his car was undoubtedly going better than anybody else's
01:24:38but he kept stuck in
01:24:39he caught Rosberg right at the end
01:24:42and then he forced the mistake
01:24:43or rather I think Rosberg much more forces on himself
01:24:45but there's no doubt that Rosberg was tired
01:24:47his head appeared to be lolling about beforehand
01:24:49but that's still no excuse
01:24:51because you've got the adrenaline push
01:24:52of another car right behind you
01:24:54and that was a great shame that Rosberg's done that
01:24:57well a win then for John Watson
01:24:59second for Keke Rosberg
01:25:01third Nicky Lauda
01:25:02and subject to official confirmation
01:25:04Alain Prost still leads the world championship
01:25:06the world championship
