00:00Ladies and gentlemen, you are all by now familiar with the brutality and the dastardly manner
00:09in which 26 innocent lives were prematurely terminated at Pahalgaam on the 22nd of April.
00:19When you combine those horrific scenes and the pain of the families that the nation witnessed
00:26with numerous other recent terrorist strikes on our armed forces and defenseless civilians,
00:36we knew that the time had arrived to make yet another compelling statement of our resolve as a nation.
00:47Operation Sindur was conceptualized with a clear military aim to punish the perpetrators and planners of terror
00:56and to destroy their terror infrastructure.
01:01What I do not state here, of course, is the often stated determination of India and its intolerance to terror.
01:09It set into motion a very diligent and microscopic scarring of the terror landscape across the borders
01:19and the identification of terror camps and training sites.
01:25The locations that emerged were numerous, but as we deliberated more,
01:32we realized that some of these terror hubs were now bereft of any presence
01:38and had preemptively been vacated fearing retribution from us.
01:45There was also a term of reference and our own binding self-imposed restriction
01:52to target only terrorists and thus prevent collateral damage.
01:59There were nine camps that you are now all familiar with which were confirmed by our various intelligence agencies to be inhabited.
02:13Some of these were in POJK, while there were others that were located in the Punjab province in Pakistan.
02:22One, nefarious places such as Muridke, the hub center of the Lashkar-e-Taiba,
02:30has over the years bred infamous characters such as Ajmal Kasab and the likes of David Hedley.
02:39What followed was a careful scrutiny of each of these sinister locations,
02:46their layout, configuration, even the type of construction in each structure
02:52and the terrain obtained around these.
02:56This was with an obvious intent to deduce and identify the exact vector
03:03that was required for their neutralization,
03:08as also the eyes in the sky that we would send up
03:13to ensure that we brought back evidence
03:17that we had indeed targeted what we set out to.
03:22The precise images of these engagements
03:24on that fateful and historical night
03:27have already been showcased
03:30during the first press statement
03:32on the 7th of May
03:34that was helmed by our Foreign Secretary.
03:37I have no doubt in my mind
03:39that we achieved total surprise
03:42and those strikes across those nine terror hubs
03:48left more than 100 terrorists killed,
03:51including high-value targets
03:53such as Yusuf Azhar, Abdul Malik Rauf,
03:57and Mudassir Ahmed
03:58that were involved in the hijack of IC 814
04:03and the Pulwama blast.
04:05The line of control was also violated soon after by Pakistan
04:11and the erratic and rattled response of our enemy
04:15was apparent from the number of civilians,
04:19inhabited villages, and religious sites such as Gurudwara's
04:23that were unfortunately hit by them,
04:26leading to a sad loss of lives.
04:30The Indian Air Force played a major part in these strikes
04:33by engaging some of these camps
04:35and the Indian Navy provided wherewithal
04:39in terms of precision munitions.
04:42The Indian Air Force obviously had their assets up in the sky
04:47and I will here request Air Marshal Bharti,
04:52the Director General of Air Operations,
04:54to detail for you the methodology
04:56that the Men in Blue adopted
04:59to successfully manifest this mission.
05:01Thank you, Rajiv.
05:07A very good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
05:11It indeed is a difficult time
05:14that we have to come here like this
05:15and brief you.
05:18We could have done without this,
05:20but we had no choice.
05:23As the DGMO has detailed,
05:28the event was precipitated
05:31by the Dastardly Act
05:33at Pahalgaon.
05:37The sequence of events
05:39have already been detailed.
05:42We carefully selected the targets
05:44and out of the nine selected targets,
05:48the target systems
05:49that were given to the Indian Air Force
05:52were the notorious training camps
05:55at Bhopalpur and Muridke.
05:59These being further
06:00from the international boundary.
06:04Through critical target system analysis,
06:13we analyzed what was to be done
06:15to annihilate these targets
06:18and plan to engage these targets
06:24with precision air-to-surface guided munitions
06:29so as to avoid collateral damage.
06:36The modalities of planning process
06:39I will not go through at this instant.
06:42However, what I would like to show you
06:44is the results that we achieved
06:47through our targeted airstrikes.
06:51Could I have the second slide, please?
06:57Yeah, change, please.
06:59Okay, this is what the terror infra
07:08at Muridke looks like.
07:12If you see, north is as indicated
07:17and to the right is east
07:22where the international boundary lies.
07:25Could we have the next slide, please?
07:26Okay, this is what the terror infra
07:29orientating.
07:34Just go back to one slide.
07:38Okay.
07:42Please have a look at this red building.
07:45The series of buildings out here
07:48and this empty ground.
07:56Next.
08:00If you relate,
08:02the empty ground is here
08:03and you see this is the first weapon
08:06that is impacting,
08:08this is the impact point number one
08:10on Muridke training camp
08:12with our precision guided weapons
08:14on early morning 7th.
08:17Next, please.
08:19Keep your eyes glued
08:20for the second weapon coming in
08:22and the second impact
08:25on the selected target point.
08:29Next slide, please.
08:30Third weapon.
08:37Third impact.
08:38Third impact.
08:41Continue.
08:46And fourth weapon,
08:47fourth impact.
08:48So,
08:49through these targeted
08:51and precision targeting,
08:54we addressed the target
08:56at Muridke,
08:57which was the terror infrastructure.
09:01Can you hear me?
09:02All right.
09:03Okay, I'll come closer to the mic.
09:05Now, we go to the next target,
09:07which is the Bhavalpur training camp.
09:10Next slide, please.
09:10Okay, just wait.
09:14So, the effect,
09:15if you see,
09:18the impact point,
09:22if I can point out,
09:24this is the impact point.
09:26The ammunition has
09:28gone through the roof
09:29and it has created a blast inside,
09:32the photographs of which
09:33you would have,
09:33all of you would have seen.
09:36And
09:37the red building,
09:39after that,
09:41there was this
09:41double-story building.
09:43It has been completely
09:44decimated
09:45by our precision targeting.
09:48Next, please.
09:52The target system,
09:53which was in the north,
09:55a series of buildings.
09:57I'll show you
09:58how it looked.
09:59Next.
10:04Completely destroyed
10:05by our
10:06precision targeting.
10:09Next.
10:09Now,
10:11coming to Bhavalpur,
10:12this is the target complex
10:13that we are dealing with,
10:15a fairly large target complex.
10:17So,
10:18we had to carefully choose
10:19the points
10:21that we needed to address,
10:23which were high value
10:24and which would meet
10:25our stated objectives
10:27of eliminating
10:28the terrorists.
10:30I would like to draw your attention
10:32to this red canopy
10:33and in relation to that,
10:35I would cover the targets.
10:37One target system
10:38is a series of buildings here,
10:40other one here,
10:41and other one out here.
10:43Next slide, please.
10:44This is how it looked before
10:48and this is
10:50how the building looked
10:51after the
10:52impact of the weapon
10:54and orientation
10:55in relation to this red canopy
10:57you can see here.
10:58Next, please.
10:59before,
11:03next,
11:04and after.
11:09The roofs have completely collapsed.
11:11Next,
11:12this is the target system.
11:16Next,
11:19precision targeting
11:20and we have achieved
11:22our objectives here.
11:24Next.
11:25All right.
11:25So,
11:26that was
11:26what we did
11:27on the seventh.
11:28Our objective
11:29was to address
11:30these two enemy,
11:32these two
11:33terrorist camps
11:34and that we did
11:36with precision
11:37and thereafter
11:38we maintain
11:40a robust
11:41air defense posture
11:42because remember
11:43our
11:44objective
11:46was to target
11:47the
11:47terrorists
11:48and terrorist
11:49infrastructure,
11:49not
11:50any other
11:51infrastructure,
11:52not the
11:53Pakistani military,
11:55not the Pakistani
11:55any other
11:56infrastructure.
11:57So,
11:57that is what
11:57we have
11:58maintained
11:59on the
12:00seventh of
12:00May.
12:03However,
12:04what we saw
12:04in the evening
12:06of
12:07seventh of
12:07May
12:08we were
12:09saturated
12:11with
12:12raid
12:13of
12:14Pakistani
12:15unmanned
12:16aerial vehicles
12:17and
12:18small drones.
12:19and these
12:21came in
12:22waves
12:22in our
12:24civilian areas
12:24over our
12:25military
12:25installations
12:26and
12:27all of them
12:29were successfully
12:30intercepted.
12:32Few of them
12:33did manage
12:33to land.
12:36However,
12:37there was
12:37not much
12:38damage that
12:39they did.
12:39and we
12:40have
12:40our
12:40robust
12:41counter-U.S.
12:42hard-kill
12:43and soft-kill
12:43systems
12:44which is
12:44the job.
12:46However,
12:47the difference
12:48here was
12:48that we
12:49had targeted
12:50the terrorists.
12:53The adversary
12:54now has
12:55targeted our
12:56civilians
12:56and the
12:58military
12:58infrastructure.
12:59So,
12:59it had to be
13:00responded to.
13:01So,
13:02in a quick
13:03and calibrated
13:03response,
13:05that very
13:05night,
13:07we struck
13:07their radar
13:09installations
13:09at Lahore
13:10and close
13:11to Gujarawala,
13:12the LYT
13:13installation,
13:14to indicate
13:15to him
13:16that we
13:16are ready,
13:18yet we
13:18do not
13:19want to
13:19escalate
13:20our fight
13:21was with
13:21the terrorists
13:22and not
13:22with the
13:23Pakistani
13:23military
13:23establishment.
13:31Thank you,
13:32A. Marshall
13:32Bharti.
13:33So,
13:34ladies and
13:34gentlemen,
13:35he has
13:35outlined
13:36operations
13:36not only
13:38on the
13:38night of
13:386th and
13:397th of
13:39May,
13:40when
13:40Operation
13:41Sindur
13:41commenced,
13:42but also
13:43on the
13:43subsequent
13:43night,
13:44being well
13:45aware and
13:46familiar with
13:47the congenital
13:48and impulsive
13:49nature of
13:51our adversary
13:51and even
13:53though we
13:54did attempt
13:55to reach
13:55out and
13:55communicate
13:56our
13:57compulsions
13:58to strike
13:58at the
13:59heart of
13:59terror to
14:01my counterpart
14:01in the
14:02immediate wake
14:03of Operation
14:04Sindur.
14:06The request
14:06was brusquely
14:08turned out,
14:09turned down,
14:09I'm sorry,
14:10with an
14:11intimation
14:11that a
14:13severe response
14:14was inevitable
14:15and in the
14:17offing.
14:18We were,
14:18of course,
14:19prepared.
14:21Operations on
14:22the 7th and
14:22the 8th,
14:23Air Marshal
14:24Bharti
14:24spoken about,
14:25on the
14:26night of
14:268th and
14:279th of
14:28May,
14:29they flew
14:29drones and
14:30aircrafts into
14:31our airspace
14:32all across
14:33the borders
14:34and made
14:37largely unsuccessful
14:48attempts to
14:50target numerous
14:51military infrastructure.
14:53Violations on the
14:55line of control
14:56by Pakistan
14:57also commenced
14:58yet again
14:59and precipitated
15:00into fierce
15:02RT engagements.
15:04The air
15:05operations on
15:06the night of
15:078th and 9th of
15:08May, I'll yet
15:09again request
15:10the DG air
15:12operations to
15:12cover.
15:13So, I just
15:22covered what
15:23happened on
15:24the night of
15:267th and
15:268th.
15:28What we
15:29found that
15:30on the
15:31night of
15:328th and
15:339th,
15:34starting as
15:35early as
15:3522, 30
15:36hours,
15:36our cities
15:39had a mass
15:42raid of
15:43drones,
15:44unmanned
15:45aerial vehicles,
15:46U-caps,
15:47starting right
15:48from Srinagar
15:49going down
15:51right up to
15:51Nalya.
15:52It was a mass
15:54raid in
15:54waves and
15:56it was
15:56relentless.
15:58However,
15:59we were
15:59prepared and
16:01our air
16:01defense
16:02preparedness
16:02ensured that
16:04there is no
16:05damage on
16:06ground or
16:08to any of
16:09the intended
16:09targets that
16:10the enemy
16:11might have
16:11planned for.
16:13The difference
16:14between 7th
16:16night and
16:178th night was
16:18that on 7th
16:19night he
16:20sent in
16:21his
16:21YIHA
16:24class of
16:24UAVs.
16:26However,
16:27these UAVs
16:28can go some
16:29distance,
16:30they are
16:30armed.
16:32However,
16:32on the
16:338th,
16:34less numbers
16:35of armed
16:35U-caps were
16:36there or
16:36UAVs were
16:37there and
16:37more numbers
16:38of quad
16:39copters maybe
16:40for surveillance
16:41or just
16:42for harassment
16:43of civilians.
16:46This
16:46continued
16:47till midnight.
16:50Our air
16:50defense
16:51preparedness
16:51ensured that
16:52there was no
16:53damage on
16:54the ground
16:54either to the
16:55military
16:56installations or
16:57to the
16:57civilians.
16:58However,
16:59the enemy
17:00had yet again
17:01shown that
17:02he wanted to
17:04up the
17:04ante and he
17:05wanted a
17:06fight and
17:07we were up
17:08to the
17:08task.
17:10In a
17:10measured and
17:11calibrated
17:12response,
17:14we once again
17:15targeted his
17:16military
17:17installations,
17:18which included
17:19his SAM
17:22sites at
17:24Malirkant.
17:25this also
17:27included his
17:28surveillance radar
17:29sites at
17:34Lahore and
17:37close to
17:37Gujarawala.
17:38These were
17:39suitably
17:40addressed and
17:43thereafter his
17:45drone attacks
17:47continued even
17:48till morning,
17:50which we
17:51countered,
17:52and during
17:53the daytime there
17:54was some
17:54respite.
17:56Here I would
17:56like to bring
17:57out another
17:58aspect.
17:59What we found
17:59was that while
18:01the drone attacks
18:02were being
18:02launched from
18:03somewhere close
18:04to Lahore,
18:05enemy had
18:06allowed his
18:07civilian aircraft
18:08to also continue
18:09to fly out of
18:10Lahore.
18:12Not only his
18:13known aircraft,
18:13but international
18:14passenger aircraft,
18:17which is quite
18:18insensitive,
18:19and we had to
18:20exercise extreme
18:21caution, even
18:23at the cost of
18:24some tactical
18:26disadvantage, to
18:27ensure that
18:28there is no
18:28damage to any
18:29of the civilian
18:30aircraft.
18:31And this was
18:32also brought out
18:32in our press
18:33briefing during
18:34the day.
18:38So I will now
18:38hand over to
18:39my colleague to
18:40cover the
18:41events of
18:43night onwards.
18:46On land, we
18:48also undertook
18:48certain measures
18:49such as
18:50deployment of
18:52air defense and
18:53electronic warfare
18:54assets to
18:56establish an
18:57integrated grid
18:58with the Indian
18:59Air Force.
19:00And I have seen
19:01and heard some
19:02of you wax
19:03eloquent about
19:04the benefits of
19:05such an
19:06architecture when
19:07it comes to
19:08negating and
19:09combating air
19:10intrusions.
19:11We also
19:12carried out
19:12deployment to
19:14include movement
19:16of our forces in
19:18the land, sea, and
19:19air domains.
19:20The night of the
19:229th and the
19:2310th of May saw
19:24similar intrusions by
19:26drones and
19:27aircrafts.
19:27aircrafts, and
19:28this time there
19:30was a concerted
19:31effort to target
19:33airfields and
19:34some very, very
19:35important logistic
19:36installations,
19:38albeit yet again
19:40unsuccessful and
19:41denied gallantly
19:42and efficiently, I
19:44must say, by the
19:46integrated Indian
19:47Air Force and
19:48Indian Army Air
19:49Defense.
19:50We further
19:51strengthened our
19:52deployment and
19:53also initiated some
19:55pressure points to
19:57send a very clear and
19:58unambiguous message to
20:00the other side to
20:01desist from any
20:03misadventures on
20:04land.
20:05Some of the air
20:06fields and dumps saw
20:07repeated attacks in
20:09waves from the air.
20:11All were thwarted.
20:14The Pakistan Army has
20:16reported to have lost
20:18approximately 35 to
20:2140 personnel in
20:23artillery and small
20:24arms firing on the
20:25line of control
20:26between the 7th and
20:28the 10th of May.
20:30What the other side
20:32had probably also not
20:34reckoned with was the
20:35speedy and precise
20:37turnaround and hit
20:38back by the Indian
20:40Air Force.
20:41And I will yet again
20:42ask Air Marshal
20:43Bharti to speak about
20:46the significant and
20:47game-changing strikes.
