00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World on an amazing day here in Manchester. My name is Theo Cusenbets and today we're going to be talking about vinyl records.
00:07And that's because today's topic is all about collections. And specifically, vinyl records have become one of the things that people in Manchester are most passionate about collecting.
00:16At a time around 10 years ago, it felt as though all music was moving towards streaming, with sites such as Spotify, Amazon Music and Apple Music really cornering the market and moving people away from CDs in the same way that CDs had moved people away from vinyl records.
00:28But now in recent years, it feels as though vinyl records in particular have had a real renaissance as people are keen to physically hold the things that they're passionate about.
00:38Piccadilly Records is just behind me and it is one of Manchester's best record shops.
00:41So we're going to go in there, have a look around and talk to some of the customers about why vinyl records matter that much to them.
00:47I think in lockdown, I got into rock music and stuff like that.
00:51And I really wanted to just, I feel like all that era of music, it was obviously made to be on vinyl and stuff.
01:00I just got into it, it seemed like a cool thing really, just like the physical medium of it.
01:04All of that kind of music that was originally like all the time 80 pressed on, like that kind of medium I kind of got into.
01:09Through that, it kind of feels like, it kind of feels more authentic having it like on the original way it was supposed to be listened to, I guess.
01:15It's more like you're buying something to listen to on like physical medium because you love it more than just because it's the only way to do it.
01:23If I'm in the flat and I've got stuff to do, I put it on and it's sort of, it's almost like a 15 minute time I'm changing the size.
01:29But I really like it that way.
01:31And I think previously I was very sort of Spotify playlist and only listening to the bits from albums that I wanted to hear or that I'd already heard.
01:38But now it's made me listen to albums front to back, which I think when you speak to like our parents' generation, that's how they always did it, I would say.
01:47There's certain albums that I look at and I'm like, oh, I should have that on vinyl.
01:51I was looking Marvin Gaye's on the side there and I was like, I should probably have that.
01:54And even when I've not got vinyl now, if I'm on in the car with Spotify, I tend to pick albums more often now because I've just got used to listening that way and I've heard it now.
02:03Now while vinyls first jumped back into sort of relevancy and importance was around 10 years ago now, many predict that CDs will be next.
02:10There's a massive range here. Some of the customers here have already made that jump.
02:15I've got a few vinyls here and there, but most are CDs because my parents have a, well, I now have a like 1980s vintage CD player.
02:22And it does like tape as well. Um, but it's got like, it's a really good set, like Panasonic classic little setup.
02:30It's really cool. So I've just started collecting from there.
02:32Well, I think a lot of it is also to do with the industry. Like it is money for the artists and like a lot of artists started pushing it about.
02:40And it's kind of became a bit of like a, a thing where people like to have a physical copy of it.
02:45Like it's like proof of what they listened to. And it's almost like, it's like a bit of merchandise.
02:49It shows you like an artist. It shows that you're interested.
02:53And I mean, it's a bit fun as well. Like it looks cool.
02:57You can have, it's cool to have a collection, I guess.
02:59You can have.
