Western countries have failed to create a sustainable European security system following the end of the Cold War, and it is time for a change. This position was voiced several times by President Medvedev. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov brought up Moscow’s proposals considering the new European security treaty in Vienna at the OSCE annual security conference. But so far it has received a cool reception from the Western policy makers. Why? Will the crisis change their foreign policy approaches? We’ll be talking about it with Professor Richard Sakwa, an authority on Russian and Eastern European communist and post-communist politics.
