'Teachable Moment' President Obama clarifies view on arrest of Harvard professor; says situation occurred between 'two decent people'

Obama has said he was surprised by the controversy sparked by his comments. White House spokesman Roberts Gibbs said early Friday that the president regrets that the media have gotten all worked up over the controversy and been distracted from other more substantive issues such as health care.

Meanwhile, President Obama wrapped up his press conference on health care by telling the nation, “Skip Gates is a friend of mine,” and dismissing James Crowley as being a member of a police department that “acted stupidly.”

Then the Herald’s O’Ryan Johnson breaks the news of Sgt. Crowley’s five years - five years - as a racial profiling instructor.
