The Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers, minutes from the centre of the Danish capital, has installed two exercise bicycles hooked up to generators in the lobby.

Guests are invited to jump on and start pedaling, and if they produce enough electricity, they get a free meal. The offer only applies to paying guests, not passers-by.

[Frederikke Tommergaard, Hotel Spokeswoman]: (English)
"We came up with the idea to use the bicycles because the bicycles are a great symbol of Copenhagen. Of the green part of the city, of the sustainable profile our capital has…and also a great way of symbolizing the green profile of our hotel.”

The electricity generated would go straight into the hotel's electricity grid.

The value of the meal at the hotel restaurant or lobby bar is about 240 Danish crowns – that’s 44 U.S. dollars.

So how much pedaling would one have to do to get the meal?

[Frederikke Tommergaard, Hotel Spokeswoman]: (English)
"The guests have to bicycle long enough to generate ten watts of electricity. For a quite fit person that would take seven-eight minutes.”

Hotel guest Stella Kamb from Germany thought it was a great idea.

[Stella Kamb, German Hotel Guest]: (English)
"I like it if they think about the nature and are environmentally friendly, and on the other hand I think we should all do a little more sports to keep healthy.”

After finishing her session, Kamb could sit down in the restaurant and order her well-earned meal.

[Stella Kamb, German Hotel Guest]: (English)
"I like it very much. You can do something, earn your meal and don't have to pay for it. So that's good. And you keep healthy as well.”

The plan is to test the idea for a year with a view to expanding it to more Crowne Plaza hotels, part of the InterContinental Hotels Group.
