An Indian man was rescued from the perils of obesity; utterly confined to his room. Indian firefighters had to free the man from his Mumbai apartment. Obesity is becoming an increasing problem in India and many other Asian countries.

Fire-fighters rescue a severely obese man who reportedly hasn't left his Mumbai apartment in 4 years.

53 year-old Nazeer Ahmed Abdul Rehman's weight caused his limbs to stiffen, confining him to his flat over time.

He weighs around 190 kilograms—or about 420 pounds.

India, and many other Asian countries have seen a rapid increase in obesity in recent years.

Growing affluence and migration from the countryside to cities often leads to sedentary lifestyles and access to fattier foods.

Rehman blames poor lifestyle choices and eating habits for his obesity.

[Nazeer Ahmed Abdul Rehman, Obese 53 Year-Old]:
"The habit of eating has brought me to this condition. I was eating junk food and had a bad lifestyle. I used to sleep late and get up early. I had sleeping disorders, stress, which lead to an increase in the uric acid in my body and it stiffened my joints. I used to work at Lagoon Restaurant. After working at the counter for 5 years I reached a situation when I was unable to walk. Since the last five years, I have been facing a lot of problems. But my wife and children have stood by me."

A fire-fighter involed in the rescue wished Rehman all the best.

[D.B. Sawant, Fire Brigade Station Officer]:
"Uncle Rehman weighed 200 kilograms. Everybody thought he would not be able to come down, and not be able to reach the hospital. But our team—all our troopers—worked together so that uncle starts with his medical treatment soon. This will also bring happiness to us. And we wish that uncle returns home healthy."

Rehman will now undergo stomach surgery to help reduce his weight.
