Lady Gaga was crowned queen of the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday when she won eight prizes, including video of the year.

She won most of the astronaut-shaped statuettes for the Bad Romance video.

The only other multiple winner was eight-time nominee Eminem, who won a pair of awards for his clip Not Afraid. The rapper also opened the show with a medley of tunes and a surprise duet with Rihanna.

Taylor Swift, went home empty-handed, but she provided one of the show's more provocative moments, debuting a song that made references to her onstage controversy with Kanye West during last year's ceremony.

West earned widespread ridicule when he stormed the stage during Swift's acceptance of an award, grabbed the microphone from her and praised Beyonce, who was competing for the same award.

The MTV Video Music Awards, which are more about performances than statues, also featured acts from Drake, Usher and Linkin Park. The show was held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
