Mayor Gustavo Sanchez is the third public official attacked in Mexico in less than a week.
[Guadalupe Barajas, Spokesperson of Prosecutor's Office]:
"It is presumed that the cause of death of the two people was due to a blow to the head from a rock. It's what we have so far. Brain matter flowed out and that is what caused his death. There were bloodied rocks next to the bodies that also had cranial fluids."
There has been no confirmation that the killing is related to drug violence.
More than 29,000 people have been killed in violence between rival drug cartels and between cartels and state security forces since President Felipe Calderon launched his offensive on cartels in 2006.
Last Thursday, armed men killed the mayor of a town outside Mexico's northern business city of Monterrey.
The next day the mayor elect in Chihuahua State was shot in the head and chest by suspected drug hit men, leaving him in critical condition.
