The message in THE BOTTOM LINE: the role of appearances and how appearances manipulate our attitudes and reactions.

In THE BOTTOM LINE, the coat-check guy is double: he is the costume who executes his job as a machine, without name, he is the status of coat-check guy. He is also a complex character who is between light and shadow. That aspect makes him more human than the other characters, he has sensitivity, his passion for fur and sensuality, he is like a Don Juan waiting for ladies to come inside his coat-check room to bring their fur coats. In that way the coat-check guy would represent the duality of the human condition, greatness of the mind and misery of the body.

The arch of the story is clearly at the climax when the coat-check guy becomes a more interesting "man" for the lady than Napoleon, whose status as an actor is ironically restricted in a lower level of intensity.
