The white tiger. Few animals are so visually striking--and few so rare. Now a set of white tiger quintuplets has been born in the Chinese city of Harbin... Let's take a look.

The Siberian Tiger Park in Harbin, northeast China, has a whole new pack of white tigers.

The five cubs were born to an artificially inseminated mother, and all seem to be doing well so far. The siblings are rare not just for their number, but also for their apparent health and hardiness.

[Ma Guoqing, Siberian Tiger Park Technician]:
"The white tiger is scarce, with only 30 or 40 in China. A white tiger mother usually gives birth to about two or three cubs each time. It's very rare to see a white tiger mother bear quintuplets."

The new cubs number one male to four females--which could help efforts to boost overall species numbers. One male's seed can be re-used repeatedly, but fertile females are harder to find.

Meanwhile, "the tiger mother" herself is on a special milk-and-eggs diet to enhance her post-birth nutrition, and also to help ensure the right nutrients reach her celebrated offspring.
