UK officials reveal the country's biggest ever drugs haul on Wednesday. A pleasure boat was hiding 1.2 tons of cocaine with a value of more than 493 million U.S. dollars.
UK officials from the UK Border Agency announced on Wednesday that a record haul of cocaine has been seized, equivalent to 493 million U.S. dollars.
Six alleged members of an international gang were arrested.
A total of 1.2 tons of cocaine with a purity of 90% makes it the biggest haul of Class A drugs, or hard drugs, ever found in UK history.
The drugs were found hidden inside a 65 ft. pleasure cruiser at Southampton docks in June.
[David Armond, Head of Soca International Department]:
"It's an absolutely major success and it's the largest seizure ever of cocaine in the UK now bearing in mind this is 1.2 tons of 90% pure cocaine which will be cut to up to five times that level before it reaches the street and will consist of well over 7 million street deals when you consider that something in the region of 25 tons of adulterated cocaine is required to feed the UK market this amounts to a substantial seizure and will have an impact on availability on the streets."
The same raid that night also uncovered a stash of 40,000 euros in cash, as well as a firearm.
