Chinese porcelain is known worldwide for its delicacy, especially the famous white-and-blue variety. Now this tradition is inspiring some more modern works. Let's take a look.

An exhibition of blue-and-white porcelain pieces is being held by the Chinese National Academy of Arts.
Twenty-eight modern painters tried their hands at painting on traditional porcelain using the standard Yuan and Ming Dynasty colors of blue and white.

The imagery covers cityscapes, people, and other elements of modern life. For each of the twenty-eight painters, it was their first time working on this interesting new medium—both a challenge and an adventure.

[Man Weiqi, Vice-Director, Chinese National Academy of the Arts]:
"This was the first time that we directly painted on porcelains because we painted on papers before. The blue pigment looked like mud so that we mixed it with tea water to make it neither too light nor too dark. The ware was fragile before glazing. No one knew what it would look like after being glazed."

The result is both classical and contemporary with artists creating traditional art with modern images.
