Brandenburg remains hesitant to confront its communist past and the role played by the feared secret police, the Stasi. But now a new federal law permits authorities to examine the pasts of suspected Stasi members. Some regional politicians are opposed to it. And they want state prosecutors and judges to be exempt from the new Stasi checks.
