Disabled rights lawyer Ni Yulan and her husband were sentenced in Beijing this week. She got 2 years and 8 months, and her husband 2 years. Their lawyers say the trial on Tuesday should not have taken place at all--because they didn't do anything wrong. They also allege the court broke the law on many occasions during the trial.
Attorneys for disabled Chinese rights lawyer Ni Yulan say irregularities dogged the trial this week that sentenced her to two years, eight months in prison. Ni and her husband were convicted of "causing a disturbance" and "committing fraud" on Tuesday, but their lawyers say the pair had done nothing wrong, and plan to appeal.
Ni's defense attorney Mo Jiyuan says the trial at the Beijing Xicheng District Court took less than 15 minutes. And the court did not allow the defense to make any statements.

Although the case grabbed international attention, few observers were actually allowed in the courtroom. Ni's daughter Dong Xuan was allowed in, but was told to sit at the back of the room.

"The situation with my mom was that I couldn't see her whole face. I did see that her hand was very skinny, just skin and bones. She was sitting in a wheel chair with a jacket, and her legs were covered with a big military coat."
Ni, a renowned activist for victims of forced demolitions, was detained with her husband in April last year during a nationwide sweep against dissidents. Beijing authorities alleged they had not paid fees for a hotel they stayed at, but the pair says it was in fact a black jail—and they were forced to live there after their home was forcibly demolished in 2008.
This is Ni's third prison sentence. Police abuse during previous detentions left her permanently disabled.
