A police vehicle ran over a woman and her two children in Cajamarca, Peru on Monday (April 16), enraging local citizens already battling with authorities as they protest the massive Conga mine project.

Video from a security camera showed the police vehicle swerving up onto a sidewalk and running over a woman and her two daughters. The woman, who local news outlets identified as 31-year-old Juana Beatriz Ponce Garcia, was rushed to the hospital.

Angry protesters surrounded the police vehicle. After hours of protests and scuffles with police, protesters eventually flipped over and burned the vehicle.

The proposed mine would replace a string of alpine lakes with reservoirs, irking local community groups who say it would bring pollution and hurt scarce water supplies.
