As the first anniversary of the earthquake that struck China's Sichuan province approaches, Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan reports from Anxian about a school where preparation and persistence helped save thousands of lives.

But with students accounting for about 5,335 of the quake's total 80,000 victims, pressure remains on the Chinese government to explain why so many schools collapsed.
