At least three dead in Pakistan bomb blast

At least three people are killed in Pakistan's restive south-western city of Quetta Sunday after a remote-controlled bomb exploded near a police van.

No one is claiming responsibility for the attack.

(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) QUETTA POLICE CHIEF, MIR ZUBAIR JABBAR, SAYING:

"The bomb was planted on this donkey cart. It was detonated as the police van came near. So far, three people are dead and one policeman is injured."

Quetta is the provincial capital of Pakistan's Baluchistan province. Baluch militants have been waging a low-level insurgency for decades to win more autonomy and control over the natural resources of their impoverished region.

Islamist militants linked to al Qaeda and Taliban are also active in the region that borders Afghanistan and Iran.
