Janice Neumann writing in the Chicago Tribune reported that even "though research has shown that exercise can reduce pain, ease stiff joints, fight depression and help with a host of other health problems, a study found that even fewer people with arthritis than previously thought are not getting enough exercise." The study appeared in Arthritis & Rheumatism. Rheumatologist Dr. Rowland Chang pointed out that being fit reduces pain from inflammation, and that "strengthening exercises would help mechanically" with bad joints. Loyola University Medical Center's Dr. Steve Gnatz called it a "vicious cycle," saying that patients in pain from arthritis don't exercise because they're in pain, but not exercising harms the patient more, since exercise helps rebuild cartilage.
