New World Bank chief starts first day at work

On his first day as World Bank president, Jim Yong Kim pledges to boost prosperity and growth in developing countries.

The former president of Dartmouth College, has a track record of delivering healthcare to the poor in developing countries, whether it is fighting tuberculosis in Haiti and Peru, or tackling HIV/AIDS in Russian prisons.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) JIM YONG KIM, WORLD BANK PRESIDENT, SAYING:

"People here in Washington, and in more than a 100 country offices in the world, are passionate about the twin aims of boosting prosperity and eradicating poverty. I am very excited to get going and I want to say to everyone here today that we will continue to do our work at the World Bank with innovation, with analytic rigor, and with great passion, working in partnership with governments, with civil society organizations, with the private sector and most importantly, with the people living in poverty we aspire to serve."

Kim takes over the new post from Robert Zoellick.
