Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the lone survivor of a group of militants responsible for the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people.

On Wednesday, India's Supreme Court moved to uphold the death sentence handed down to Kasab.

A lawyer for the prosecution announced the verdict to reporters.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) PUBLIC PROSECUTOR, GOPAL SUBRAMANIUM, SAYING:

"The Supreme Court has today dismissed the appeal of Mohammad Kasab. It has confirmed the findings on evidence on a scrutiny of the same. The evidence was place before the court de novo by both parties."

The three-day string of coordinated attacks struck key landmarks in the city, including the Taj Hotel, as well as a Jewish centre.

Kasab was found guilty on more than 80 charges, including murder and waging war on India.
