HEMANT RAJABHAI CHAUHAN
Akademi Award: Folk Music of Gujarat
Born in 1955 in Kundni village in Rajkot district of Gujarat, Shri Hemant Rajabhai Chauhan imbibed the rich musical tradition of the region at an early age.
Taking up music as a profession, he soon won an audience as a singer, and is today considered to be one of the most accomplished performers of the traditional music of Gujarat. Being a top-grade artist of All India Radio, he has represented his State at various major festivals in India and other countries. He has performed regularly on Doordarshan, Ahmedabad, reaching out to rural and urban audiences alike. He has to his credit a large number of commercial recordings of folk music.
Shri Hemant Chauhan has been honoured for his work by various institutions in Gujarat. The Gujarat Sangeet Nrutya Natak Akademi has conferred on him its Gaurav Puraskar (1998). He has also won the Best Playback Singer Award (1987) from the Government of Gujarat for the Gujarati film Kesar Chandan, and again for Pankhida o Pankhida (1995).
Shri Hemant Rajabhai Chauhan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to the folk music of Gujarat.
