Traffic Highest Cause of Death by Injury in China

China has become a hot tourist destination, but those wanting to visit the country may need to learn about the driving habits of local residents. According to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, car accidents are the leading cause of death by injury in China.

Traffic management authorities from the Ministry of Public Security said this week that 429 people from January to October died because drivers did not stop for pedestrians. 60 times that number of accidents happened because people didn't pay attention to traffic signs.

So if a driver misses a yield sign and runs into you, or your car it may not be so surprising. But according to one resident, it would be surprising if they offer to pay for your damages.

[Mr. Duan, Beijing Resident ]:
"Nowadays people in this country always think they are correct and others are wrong when they are in conflict. So they will blame others first."

The Ministry of Public Security also counted 798 people that died because drivers ran a red light.

So if you are thinking of driving or crossing an intersection in China, be sure to look both ways and buy good health insurance before you go.
