Color of Food Affects Selection, Taste and Health

Are we influenced by the color of Israel or only by its taste?

A restaurant owner and a dietician are convinced the color of our food can influence us physically and mentally.

Rafael Guetta, owner of the "Guetta Tripolitan Restaurant", has been drawn to Libyan cuisine since childhood.

[Rafael Guetta, Restaurant Owner]:
"North Africa is a land filled with red, paprika and turmeric. In fact, North African cuisine is mostly red. It is also true that the eyes of the habitants of North Africa are drawn to red and to strong colors. In my opinion, these colors are quite appetizing".

Guetta believes there's a link between a person's character and the colors he or she prefers in food.

[Rafael Guetta, Restaurant Owner]:
"People who are generally weak tend to eat food that is relatively bright and anemic in colors. Stronger people tend to choose stronger colors in their food, such as dark green or very strong or glittering red".

Dr. Hila Geva Aviram, a Ph.D. in Naturopathy and a dietician, believes vivid colors influence how we select our food.

[Dr. Hila Geva Aviram, Ph.D. in Naturopathy and Dietician]:
"If we examine snacks such as 'Bamba' or 'Bissli' [translator's note: famous Israeli corn and wheat snacks] and all these snacks, you would see that the colors are always strong, not pale".

In research conducted about white and dark chocolate, researchers found that most subjects sensed no difference in taste when blindfolded. Only after presented with the colors without any blindfold did they tend to choose the dark chocolate. Dr. Aviram's conclusion? Our sense of sight affects our choices in food.

[Dr. Hila Geva Aviram, Ph.D. in Naturopathy and Dietician]:
"A very red looking watermelon will cause us to believe that it is very sweet, when in fact a pink watermelon might taste even sweeter. We tend to link color with taste".But Dr Aviram also has some advice for a balanced diet. A color-balanced diet, that is.

[Dr. Hila Geva Aviram, Ph.D. in Naturopathy and Dietician]:
"Then we would be balanced with the colors too. At least 5 different colors each day would be right, because each color has its own special characteristics. What we eat constructs our physical bodies. Food can build and food can also destroy. Constructive food is the kind that contains all the colors in it. We should also take the mental aspects of eating into consideration. Since as human beings our thoughts and emotions are involved. When feeling good we should examine which colors appealed to us and eat them in measure, since not everything that we find appealing is necessarily good for us".

According to Dr. Aviram, one should examine all colors in food and their origin.

So check that the colors are natural and derived from real vegetables or cereals and avoid artificial colors.

Because it could indeed be that colors in food do have a mental and physical effect on us.
