La bocca della verità

All'interno della Chiesa di Santa Maria in Cosmedin, a Roma, si trova un grande disco di marmo a forma di maschera, rappresentante un fauno, risalente al I sec. conosciuto come Bocca della Verità. Questo "smascheratore di bugie" , nel Medioevo, giudicava l'innocenza o la colpevolezza di un imputato. In questo caso correva il rischio che la Bocca gli imputasse la mano. Il fascino che l'avvolge ha coinvolto molti registi, colpiti da questa sua caratteristica di "smascheratore di bugie" tanto da rappresentarlo all'interno dei film. Sicuramente ricorderemo "Vacanze romane", ma anche appunto "la bocca della verità" o "Sleeping bride".
La Bocca della Verità è situata all'interno del Portico della Chiesa di S. Maria edificata nel VI sec., ed è costituita da un grande disco di marmo -m1,80 diam. x ca.1.300 kg., murato nel portico della Chiesa nel 1632 (da quanto nè so io).
Il volto ivi rappresentato è stato attribuito nel corso dei secoli a vari soggetti : Giove Ammone,il dio Oceano, un oracolo, o il più probabile un fauno.
Mi è scaturita questa riflessione e ricerca, dalla poca trasparenza con cui si conducono le cose in questo paese, e se dovessimo sottoporci all'oracolo o fauno che sia, in molti ne uscirebbero monchi. Dunque, leggenda o miraggio, sarebbe opportuno ritornare sulla strada della Verità,è un dovere morale e sociale al quale non possiamo più sottrarci, in qualunque campo si svolga la nostra attività, di più ancora, se, ad essere coinvolte sono le nuove generazioni.
ENG. The Mouth of Truth is an image carved from Pavonazzo marble, of a man-like face, located in the Portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, in Rome, Italy. The scupture is thought to be part of a first century ancient roman fountain,o perharps a manhole cover, protrying one of several possible pagan gods, probably Oceanus. Most Romans believe that the Bocca represents the ancient god of the river Tiber.
The most famous caractheristic of the Mouth, however, is its role as a lie detector. Starting from the Middle Ages,it was believed that if one told a lie with one's hand in the mouth of the sculpture it would be bitten off.
The piece was placed in the portico of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin in the 17th century.
The Mouth of Truth is known to English-speaking audiences mostly from its appearance in the 1953 film Roman Holiday, parodied in the 2000 film "Sleeeping Bride" by Hideo Nakata and replicated in the film "Only you" (Robert Downey Jr-Marisa Tomei).
My reflection about the need of Truth in this moment, specially in Italy, but also all over the world.
