North Korea says missiles ready

South Korea's military are on continued standby Friday after reports that North Korea has put its missile units at the ready to attack U.S. military bases in the region.

South Korea's defence ministry said the latest developments followed an emergency meeting in the North.

(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) SOUTH KOREAN DEFENCE MINISTRY SPOKESMAN KIM MIN-SEOK SAYING:

"There was a report that at dawn today, North Korea's Kim Jong-un called an emergency military meeting and ordered missile units to stand by. We see this as a continuing measure, after its army's supreme commander's announcement on March 26 that its army will take combat duty posture No. 1."

The latest announcement by the North comes after the U.S. flew two stealth bombers over the Korean peninsula on Thursday.

Over the past few weeks, North Korea has made a series of threats, prompting the U.S. to increase their military readiness.
