Matthew Moran, aged 21 is a singer/songwriter born and raised on the picturesque island of Clare Island off the west coast of Mayo. I am a second year student of Early Childhood Care and Education in Mary Immaculate College in Limerick.
I come from a very musical family with two brothers who are both accomplished guitarists and composers. My mother is a singer and classically trained flautist who brought her guitar from Boston, where she was born and raised, and it was her guitar that we all learned our trade on.
My father, although without a note in his head, is a reciter of old poems and recitations and I firmly believe it was from him that my brothers and I gained our appreciation of all things traditional and our memory for songs.
I have been singing and playing guitar for 6 years now and composed my first song at age 16. I have found that song-writing is the greatest escape from all things mundane and didactic. I have a varied music taste from the trad genius of Davy Arthur, Steve Cooney and Paul Brady to the jam band spectacle that is the Dave Matthews Band. My own material has been labeled as new style folk and I take a lot of inspiration for my style of guitar playing from Dave Matthews who's combination of rhythm and melody playing still inspires me. I write a lot about my home as it has had and still has such a huge impact on everything I do and it being such a small island with sights that would take your breath away I never lack for inspiration when I make it home.
