Maine 'hermit' arrested after 30 years with almost no human contact

Until he was arrested earlier this week in Maine, Christopher Knight, lived with almost no human contact for 27 years.

He says it all began with a walk in the woods just after the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, the last major event he is aware of. Pretty soon, he was living in a makeshift tent near a pond.

Knight confessed to police that everything he owned with the exception of his glasses was stolen from a nearby camp -- propane tanks, clothes, bins.

Knight kept a low profile, painting the tarp to blend in with his surroundings. His says he spoke with one person --- a lone hiker --- during that nearly 30 year period.

All of that changed when he was discovered on surveillance tape inside a nearby home. He's been charged with one count of burglary but is suspected in 1,000 thefts.
