Amateur video footage shows the arrival of a powerful tornado in the Emilio Romagna region of Northern Italy on Friday (May 3).

The tornado arrived with hail and heavy rain, damaging hundreds of homes and injuring at least 12 people.

The video shows dramatic scenes in towns and villages close to the regional capital, Bologna.

Many farmers were out working on their land and were forced to take shelter as the storm hit.

The region's governor has asked the central government to declare a state of emergency.

The Italian agricultural watchdog, Coldiretti, has warned of millions of euros losses because of damage to farms and crops.
